2 Three hard truths 1. Global energy demand is growing, the supply is not. 2. Burning fossil fuels is bad for the environment 3. Energy and ICT are closely interlinked Your iphone is powered by coals 2012: economy still inherited the economic momentum of 19th century England; world s 20 largest companies: ¾ of them are either producing fossil fuels, trading them or converting them into transport or energy. Contribute to reducing 40% CO2 in 2025 in Amsterdam 1 Ambitions realized by: Greening of IT Realising energy savings within the ICT sector Greening by IT Innovative use of ICT for the reduction of CO2 emissions in other sectors Green IT Economy Creating new business opportunities with Green IT 3 2 The data center reality 90% + of the electricity pulled of the grid is wasted. Digital warehouses use about 30 billion watts of electricity, roughly equivalent to the output of 30 nuclear power plants. These physical realities are far from the mythology of the internet and the cloud. Google s data centers consume nearly 300 million watts, Facebook s 60 million watts. Of all things the Internet was expected to become the proliferation of backup diesel generators was not one of them. Source: NYT sept euroforum 28 juni

7 Big Data 9000 By 2015 the number of networked devices will be double the entire global population. All sensor data has uncertainty. Global Data Volume in Exabytes Aggregate Uncertainty % The total number of social media accounts exceeds the entire global population. This data is highly uncertain in both its expression and content. Data quality solutions exist for enterprise data like customer, product, and address data, but this is only a fraction of the total enterprise data. 0 Multiple sources: IDC,Cisco By 2015, 80% of all available data will be uncertain Data centers and CO2 CO2 emissions Dutch data centers (Kton CO2/year) euroforum 28 juni

12 Apple DC on renewable energy Self-sufficient Apple is building what will be the largest private solar arrays and the largest non-utility fuel cell installation operating anywhere in the US. The renewable power will feed into the company s $1bn data centre in Maiden, North Carolina, supplying 60% of the 20 megawatts of power the data centre needs when running at full capacity. Apple says it will be the most environmentally sound data centre ever built. In and around Maiden the company is building two solar array installations using high-efficiency solar cells and an advanced solar tracking system. A 100-acre, 20-megawatt installation on the same site as our data centre will produce 42m kwh of energy annually. A 100-acre site located a few kilometres away will produce another 42m kwh.
