10 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ s) 8 1. Why should nurses pursue an MSN? Whether it s qualifying for a new job, becoming a nurse educator, or gaining healthcare management skills, advancing your education takes dedication and commitment. Investing in your MSN can pay off in a number of ways. For example, according to a recent report provided by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), there are shortages of nurse educators at schools across the nation. A high-quality, online MSN degree program like Gonzaga s will provide the flexibility and support to enable you to earn your MSN degree to help you expand your knowledge and expertise, assume new areas of responsibility, and advance your career. 2. What is the cost per credit? $900 per credit.. What can students do with this degree? Nurses with an MSN in Health Systems Leadership typically work as nurse managers, directors, CNO s, and more. They are able to provide clinical and professional leadership and facilitate system improvements. Nurses in the Nurse Educator track work as a nursing educator in the following positions: health care staff development, staff educator, nursing faculty. Nurses with an MSN as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) provide a holistic approach to primary care for individuals and families of all ages and manage a wide variety of acute and chronic health problems. The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) MSN Program prepares students to provide the full range of services that comprise primary mental health care in diverse settings with a variety of clients/patients. 4. What are application deadlines? This program has rolling admissions. 5. Is Gonzaga s MSN program accredited? Gonzaga is regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). Gonzaga s nursing program is also accredited by Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). 6. Can students do the practicum hours where they work? Students are encouraged find practicum locations outside of their current facilities in order to learn, grow, and have additional networking opportunities. With faculty approval, students can complete practicum hours in the organizations where they are employed. However, their preceptors may not be their direct supervisors, and practicum hours must be separate from worked hours. Students must arrange practicum experiences on other units other than where they work. 7. How often will students have to log into class? The MSN program has deadlines for completing and submitting work, but no scheduled times for you to be logged into your class. Students will enjoy a great deal of interaction via the asynchronous discussion forums. 8. Will students need any special equipment for their computers? Other than Microsoft Office, students are not required to have any special equipment for their computers, and the online format is also Mac compatible. 9. Will the program prepare nurses to apply for a DNP program? Currently, the MSN in Health Systems Leadership, Family Nurse Practitioner, and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner tracks will prepare students to apply for Gonzaga University s Post-Master s Doctor of Nursing Practice Program. An MSN in Nursing Education will qualify nurses to apply to a PhD program. Students who are seeking further education should check the individual DNP/PhD program requirements for the various schools of interest.
