GENERAL INFORMATION A Sub-department of Pedagogy has existed in the Faculty of Letters since the foundation of the University in 1906, but, it was only in 1949 that it was expanded to become a Faculty of Education with the subsequent Graduate School established in This was done in order to meet the increasing need to promote research activities and personnel training in the fields of education, which were then undergoing considerable changes under the 1947 educational reforms. Both the Faculty of Education and the Graduate School have been extensively reorganized over the past few years, and in April 1998 a new system was put into effect whereby graduate studies were given a more central role. Since 2007, the Graduate School of Education has been engaged in two major projects: the "Global COE Program" and the "Support Program for Improving Graduate School Education" (funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology). They have played a role in enhancing the quality of graduate education. The Graduate School is made up of two Divisions: (1) Education which consists of seven Chairs, and (2) Clinical Studies of Education which consists of four Chairs. The areas of specialization in each category are as follows: Studies on Educational Foundation: Pedagogy, History of Western and Japanese education, Human develop-mental studies. Educational Psychology: Educational psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Clinical psychology, Psychotherapy, Multimedia education. Interdisciplinary Studies of Education System: Sociology of education, Lifelong and continuing education, Library and Information Science, Comparative education, Educational administration and finance. RESEARCH CENTERS Since the introduction of the new system, the Graduate School has worked in close cooperation with the Praxis and Research Center for Clinical Psychology and the Center for the Promotion of Excellence in Higher Education at Kyoto University. FUNCTIONS AND STATISTICS The Graduate School and the Faculty of Education has been carrying out the following four functions: 1. research and training at graduate levels leading to the Master's and Doctoral degrees in educational studies; 2. undergraduate teaching in education; serving on the one hand as a foundation for graduate studies and on the other hand as a professional training for those going on to jobs in education and other related areas immediately after graduation; 3. certification programs for secondary school teachers, adult education specialists, museum specialists, and librarians; and 4. in service training of teachers who may work on individual projects under supervision or attend courses. As of November 2006, the teaching staff of the Graduate School and Faculty of Education includes 23 Professors, 13 Associate Professors, and 11 Research Associates. Annexed is a Faculty Library, which holds 152,305 volumes and 2,080 journals, mainly in the fields of education and related disciplines. The Library opens from 9:00 to 17:00 Monday to Friday.

This chair studies university education so as to contribute to education reform urgently needed with the university's popularization and globalization. The courses offered are designed to cover various fields of higher education studies such as teaching and learning, evaluation, curriculum design, e-learning, students' mentality, systems and policies of higher education, and student affairs. A major concept of these courses is the integration of theory and practice. Students are trained to master basic methods and theories of higher education studies including literature survey, video taping analysis, questionnaire methods, and ethnographical approaches, so that they can plan and accomplish their own researches accoding to their personal interests. Students wishing to enter this program must pass the master course entrance examination which is held by the Graduate School of Education in February. The master degree is awarded upon acquisition of required credits and favorable acceptance of the thesis.

Comparative Study of Higher Education Reform Takami Sugimoto Kaneko Nanbu The Chair of comparative educational policies was established in 1998 with the purpose of undertaking new studies focusing mainly on the comparative and international, or the administrative and financial aspects of education in Japan and other countries. The Chair consists of two subunits (courses), Comparative Education, and Educational Policy Studies, both of which have posts for a Professor and an Associate Professor. The course of comparative education focuses on educational phenomena beyond national boundaries, or on educational problems in multiethnic societies, including Japan itself. Some of the current topics of studies undertaken in the course are internationalization in higher education; curriculum adoption; multicultural education; and issues in studying abroad. Students following the course are expected to gain cross-cultural competence and will hopefully gain overseas experiences relating to their specific concerns. The course of educational policy studies focuses on political, administrative, financial, and legal aspects of education. The fundamental aim of the course is to discuss the ideal relationships and rules between education and the nation, districts or societies. The course is also interested in current practical issues such as educational reforms and policy making, promotion of educational rights, and equalizing educational opportunities. The course aims to train future educational leaders in the fields of central and local educational authorities, judiciaries, school administrators and academics and so on. Professor Inagaki has analyzed educational phenomena using qualitative methods. Professor Iwai has conducted quantitative studies of the life course. A sociologist of education needs to be well-trained in sociology and knowledgeable about education. Graduate students are expected to specialize in one of the following sociological approaches: (1) historical methods; (2) quantitative methods; (3) qualitative methods. Graduate courses in the Chair offered by the full-time faculty as well as by part-time lecturers cover a range of research topics in sociology of education such as educational credentialism, education and social class, teaching profession, socialization theory, and family change. Graduate students are also required to attend the advanced research seminar in which they have a chance to present their research results. Undergraduate courses in the department are designed for students to develop a basic familiarity with sociological research. Comparative media-studies in information societies Kawasaki Maehira Watanabe Sato General Information The Chair is composed of two sub-divisions: Lifelong Education, and Library and Information Science (Media Studies). The Four full-time members and about ten part-time lecturers from outside the university offer courses from the Chair. The emphasis of the Divisions are on comparative and historical research at the doctoral level. The instruction offered by the Division, and the library collection, are particularly suited to students or scholars in this area of study. Although the Division traditionally emphasized comparative and historical research, the Division is now also engaged in studies concerning the impact of digital and media environments or gender issues on lifelong education and library science. Courses required for the certification of professional librarians; school media specialists; adult education directors; community education center managers; and curators are also offered. These programs are open to all students of the university. At present, there are four students from abroad, one of that are at doctoral level, and one at the master's Level, and another two as research students. This is a scholarly journal on lifelong education, library and information science, which focuses on contemporary issues and new ways of academic approach.
