Dental Plaque magnified thousands of times

Drinking sugary drinks and milk from a bottle can damage teeth By 1yr old a child should be using a CUP

Milk, cheese and yogurt Offer your child these foods about three times a day. Dairy products provide plenty of calcium for growing bones, but are extremely low in iron. Toddlers need less milk than babies and should not be given large bottles of milk. Offer about 120ml (4fl oz) of milk in a cup as a drink. In total, your toddler should have no more than 350ml (12fl oz) a day. Remember 30g of cheese or 125g of yoghurt is the same as ⅓ pint (190mls) Large drinks of milk will reduce a toddler's appetite for other foods, especially those higher in iron.

Snacks and Sugars Half sucrose consumed is sold as packaged sugar and half is used by food drink and confectionary manufacturers Average daily intake of total sugars for 2 4 year olds is 88.2 grams = 17 teaspoons - the recommendation is 6 teaspoons Confectionary, soft drinks, cakes, biscuits and table sugar are often consumed between meals- frequency of consumption is linked to decay

Smiling for Life is a nutrition and oral health programme for Early Years settings

Model Policy All snacks provided are free from sugars that can damage teeth and low in salt Fruit and vegetables are encouraged (dried fruit at mealtimes only for healthy teeth) Water and milk are safe for teeth and therefore the only drinks on offer All children over 1 year old will be encouraged to drink from a cup The dietary needs of religious groups and vegetarians/vegans are respected Parents/carers who wish to provide food for birthdays are requested to provide fresh fruit or non-food treats rather than cakes/sweets

Birthday celebrations Please do not bring in cakes or chocolate to celebrate your child s birthday Choose something else for your children to bring into school

SNACK IDEAS

How much sugar? 1 sugar cube or 1 teaspoon = 3 grams of sugar Baby drinks? Children s cereal? McDonalds McFlurry? Yoghurt? Cereal bar? Fruit bowl school bars? Fruit flakes raspberry?

17.5 grams 6 cubes 27 grams 7 sugar cubes 8 grams 3 cubes 54 grams -18 cubes 2 grams per 200ml bottle ½ cube Trace of sugar but contains citric acid

39g 9½ cubes 65g 16½ cubes 108g 27½ cubes

Total sugars 61 grams = 22 teaspoons of sugar

Almost 5 sugar cubes

Almost 9 sugar cubes

Checking out the labels Look out for hidden sugars such as fructose, dextrose, glucose, sucrose, honey and syrup. These are all damaging to teeth as they can cause tooth decay.

Acid Erosion When acid that is found in drink comes into contact with teeth Softens the hard enamel surface on our teeth When we then brush our teeth, the enamel can be worn away more easily and become thinner, Makes our teeth feel and look different in texture and shape BUT Calcium in the saliva can be re-absorbed back into the teeth when the ph is neutral

Acid erosion is on the rise in children. Half of 5-year-olds are showing signs of tooth surface loss, while around 30% of 12-year-olds have a similar problem.

Teeth lose calcium at a ph of 5.5 or lower on the ph scale

What about toothpaste? Use a pea sized blob of family formula toothpaste 1,350 ppm to 1,500 ppm Children under 3 years should use a toothpaste containing no less than 1,000 ppm fluoride and use no more than a smear of (a thin film of paste covering less than threequarters of the brush) and must not be permitted to eat or lick toothpaste from the tube Spit but don t rinse!

Over 3yrs use a small toothbrush with a pea-sized blob of family fluoride toothpaste Too much!!!!

Fluoride Fluoride strengthens the outer covering of the tooth (the enamel) making it more resistant to the harmful effects of eating sugar. The bacteria that everybody has in their mouths live off the sugar in our diet and produce acid that dissolves the tooth surface. Fluoride slows this process down giving the tooth surface more time to heal.

What can you do to help reduce the levels of tooth decay? Bottle to Cup from 6 months Water not juice Fluoride toothpaste Spit don t rinse! Encourage families to visit a dentist Discourage the giving of sweetened drinks and not use sugared dummies or juices in a dinky feeder or night comforter. Recommend that labels are carefully read and beware of hidden sugars in food and drinks-even commercially prepared baby foods.
