1 Interaction of Color Color Schemes No color stands alone. In fact the effect of a color is determined by many factors: the light reflected from it, the color that surrounds it, or the perspective of the person looking at the color. A color scheme is simply a plan for organizing colors. Color schemes are classified by how the colors relate to each other on the color wheel. Basic color schemes: Monochromatic The monochromatic color scheme uses variations in value and saturation of a single color. Monochromatic colors go well together, producing a soothing effect. The monochromatic scheme is very easy on the eyes. Mark Tansey The primary color can be mixed with neutral colors such as black, white, or gray. The monochromatic scheme is easy to manage. This scheme lacks color contrast.

6 Complementary Color Scheme The complementary color scheme is made of two colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel. 9 Split Complementary Color Scheme A color and the two colors next to its compliment on the color wheel The split complementary scheme offers more variation of color than the complementary scheme while retaining strong visual contrast. This scheme is popular among artists because it offers strong visual contrast while retaining balance, and color richness. 13 Tetradic (double complementary) color scheme Tetrads are comprised of 4 evenly spaced hues. The tetrad scheme offers more color variety than any other scheme. This scheme is the richest of all the schemes because it uses four colors arranged into two complementary color pairs. This scheme is hard to harmonize; if all four colors are used in equal amounts, the scheme may look unbalanced, so you should choose a color to be dominant or subdue the intensity of the colors.
