4 TOP: The great room s abundance of natural light was a design element that allowed Vaile to use a darker wall color and upholstery fabrics. The paint is Benjamin Moore s Hale Navy and it provides a striking contrast with the white ceilings and draperies. A painting by artist Chris DeRubeis hangs above the fireplace mantle. The homeowners found in while vacationing in Lahaina, Maui and immediately fell in love with it. The painting s rich colors almost appear to glow in the right light. RIGHT: The dining table in the great room is from Thailand and features one piece of Acacia wood for the top. The table is complemented by seagrass upholstered chairs. Within weeks of closing on the house, the couple hired a team consisting of John Matustik of Matustik Builders, Architect Jason Bernard, and Designer Sarah Vaile of Sarah Whit Design to complete a major remodeling project that perfectly interprets the tastes of both husband and wife, and fits the lifestyle of this growing family that includes two children under the age of three and a dog. The homeowners desire for a comfortable home where you could put your feet up and relax was achieved throughout the house and is especially evident in the great room. The open concept kitchen, dining room and living room are flooded with natural light due to two walls of floor-to-ceiling windows. 76 n

5 The main focus for the renovation was replacing the open wrought iron staircase to make it more child friendly. Architect Jason Bernard merged the contemporary and traditional tastes of the homeowners to create this one-of-a-kind design that combines finely crafted oak panels and glass inserts. This view of the staircase is from the lower level of the house which features an entertainment space complete with home theater. Speakers inserted into the wall panels are part of the surround system installed by Robbins Technical Services of Williams Bay. SUMMER 2015 n At the LAkE n 77

6 TOP: One of the children s bedrooms continues the nautical theme with whimsical pillows and soothing light blue paint called Silent Night. A vintage wall map that is a series of nine panels is accented with a wooden border painted white. RIGHT: The homeowners decided they wanted a rolling barn door on their home office. The wood and stain color match the staircase. OPPOSITE: The green chest of drawers provides a pop of color when entering the home s foyer. In addition to color, texture plays an important role throughout the house. Above the chest of drawers, grass cloth wallpaper and bead board provide visual interest and help dampen sound. The bright, airy look is enhanced with Vaile s use of white bead board on the vaulted ceiling, billowing white draperies, and is complemented with a deep navy blue hue on the walls. Nautical accessories, plus comfortable furnishings that include lounge chairs upholstered in a blue and white horizontal stripe fabric add to the maritime feel. The main focal point of the house, however, is the staircase (shown on the previous page) that is reminiscent of a fine wooden boat. Designed by Jason Bernard, the oak risers and treads are surrounded by a series of highly varnished vertical wood pieces and horizontal glass panels. Bernard s design even incorporates a glass child gate with latch. 78 n
