3 REMODELING TRENDS KITCHENS T here are several smart reasons to consider renovating a kitchen. Updating the heart of the home not only adds beauty but also makes the space more functional. Consider the following popular improvement options for your kitchen remodel. OPEN IT UP Latest trends for kitchens include open plans, lighter colors and islands Rarely do today s homeowners want a separate or boxed-in kitchen, according to Rob Hellyer, owner of Premier Remodeling and Construction. Most of the time, it s the other way around, he said. They want walls opened up to bring the kitchen into the main living area. Appliances are conveniently located in the kitchen island. 4 In terms of colors, nature-inspired neutral tones and patterns are big, with a continued emphasis on creams, beiges, browns and greys. 5 WINE AND GAME ROOMS Whether you have fewer than 50 bottles or more than 200, the wine room must be built for proper long-term aging with consideration given to light, humidity and temperature controls. Ideally, it will be placed in the coolest and most humid room in the house, which is easier in areas where houses have basements. In Texas, temperature controls will work that much harder to compensate for being above ground. Insulate the door to the room to keep the cool air in. Sweat the construction details to get yourself an outstanding and high-performing wine room. Lighting should be installed so it doesn t interfere with racking. Dual-zone refrigerators can be built in: drainage and electrical power are considerations. Once the operational details are considered, move to the stylistic ones. Arrange different styles of wine racks in a visually appealing way. Comfortable seating and a granite-topped counter create an intimate space for wine tastings. 6 In this 2015 GHBA Prism Award remodeled game room, Sneller Custom Homes provided the homeowners with everything they could possibly need for entertainment. Barn doors separate the media room from the games and bar area and provide essential darkness for optimal viewing. Ample space around the pool table gives room for the perfect shot, and plenty of storage in and around the bar area ensures an organized play space. 7 Rising in popularity is the walk-in closet that is transformed into a dressing space. Sneller Custom Homes and designer Pamela Smallwood (homeowner) remodeled these 2015 GHBA Prism Award-winning his and her closets with onsite custom-built cabinetry, counter from Omni Surfaces and lighting from Ferguson. Designer credit: Janice Freeman (left) In this 2015 Star Award finalist laundry room, Sneller Custom Homes and designer Cindy Aplanalp-Yates of Chairma Design Group brought new life to this light and bright laundry room. Functional countertops from Casalinea provide must-have workspace. The wide-plank wood floors are from Historic Flooring; tile backsplash is from Thorntree and plumbing/light fixtures are from Ferguson. DIRTY KITCHEN The dirty kitchen is a second kitchen in which the messy work is done. Think butler s pantry a small space near the kitchen that becomes the work horse of food preparation. It gets dirty so the big kitchen stays clean and pretty. Cabinetry, countertops, sink and dishwasher are reproduced on a smaller scale. A small fridge keeps cold ingredients handy. THE LAUNDRY ROOM Why shouldn't these spaces be as functional as other rooms? Add a sink for hand-washing delicate clothing and other tasks, drying racks, folding space, abundant storage including space for the iron and ironing board and one of the latest trends: a dog washing station. These can be the step-in type for larger breeds or raised for washing smaller dogs and cats.
