5 Installing wire ropes in multi-layer systems requires extra attention due to the risk of a bad spooling when approaching the maximum line pull of the winch. Hoist systems often work in 8 or more layers on the drum. With safety factors of 3, ropes need to resist extreme tension and will therefore tend to get pulled in the layer beyond during the load test of the crane. Severe rope damage will be the result. This can be avoided by spooling on the rope at a pretension of approximately 5% of the ropes MBL. Large diameter ropes would so require a tension of over 20 tons which cannot be realized by merely a spooler. De Ruiter Staalkabel has a unique tensioner that can generate a maximum constant tensioning of 40 tons.
