1 JOB SHADOWING INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS AND THEIR PARENTS Dear Parents, May 2014 Job Shadowing Day is a special experience for Northmont Middle School 8th grade students. Your child has an opportunity to use the entire summer vacation as a time for job shadowing! The official Job Shadowing Day is Tuesday, August 19th; there is NO school for 8th graders on this date. Students have the freedom to schedule the day at any time during the entire summer. This opens a world of opportunities that may not otherwise be available during the regular school year. A focus of the guidance department is to familiarize 8th graders with their own special skills, abilities and interests. We hope your child will consider these qualities when choosing a career to shadow. This day has the potential to be life changing! Use your contacts, networks, and Google skills to find a worthy opportunity for your 8th grade student. The sky is the limit, and students can actually spend the day in a place they may be interested in spending their lives. Included in this packet is an assignment relating to the jobs students shadow. Students are required to turn in the assignment on Wednesday, August 27th. The assignment requires students to interview the person they job shadow and also to reflect on the training/education needed for the job, future employment rate, positives and negatives, working environment, and whether or not this is a career for them. These responses will count as a 45 point grade in social studies, a 40 point grade in language arts and a 30 point grade in science. Because you provide transportation and guidance, parent involvement is essential to the success of this project! This day is an important learning opportunity in an environment away from school. Your support and encouragement determine your child s attitude and success in this learning experience. We appreciate your efforts in making this a meaningful day for your child. If you have questions or need help matching a student to a career, please call Janet Ferguson at or Kelly Sells at in the Guidance Office until June 6th. After June 6th, please contact Mr. Stekli at in the Principal s Office. You may also consult the Middle School Guidance Department Webpage. Lists of contact information about former job shadowing hosts are available. Thanks for your help, Northmont Middle School Guidance Counselors Janet Ferguson and Kelly Sells

2 QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT JOB SHADOWING DAY Q. I don t know anyone in the career field I am interested in. What should I do? A. Be resourceful! Use your family and friends as contacts. Use internet searches like Google or the telephone directory! You must pursue this aggressively! If you don t have any luck, see your guidance counselor. Also, located online on the Guidance Department Middle School Web page are extensive files on people who have hosted students in past years. You are invited to use our files to assist your research. Q. May I go to work with my parents? A. You may go to work with your parents if they work in a field which interests you. We encourage you to explore careers you may not have seen or experienced before. Q. What if the person I want to job shadow works at night? A. Work with that person PRIOR to August 19th. Q. How much time must I spend on the job? A. We expect each student to work a normal workday (between 4 8 hours). Q. How will I get there? A. Your family must provide your transportation or you can ride with the person hosting you. Q. What if I DO NOT do this project? A. If your parents refuse to give their permission for you to participate in Job Shadowing, please notify your Guidance Counselor AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. An alternative research project will be assigned. Arrangements must be made before June 6th. Remember this experience is worth 120 points! Q. May I job shadow a teacher? A. Because you ve already spent a lot of time observing teachers in your classes, we do not suggest students shadow teachers. Besides, most schools will not be in session during the summer. Q. How should I dress for this experience? A. Dress as your job host does. Ask that person about the appropriate dress code before you go. Q. May I job shadow once school begins in August? A. Students may choose any day this summer to job shadow, and as a result will not be required to attend classes on Tuesday, August 19th. Therefore, students cannot miss school to job shadow on another school day. We hope you have some ideas about occupations of interest to you. Do you know someone who works in these fields? If so, call this person and ask about opportunities to job shadow. Ask your family and friends for help. This day can provide you with an exciting learning opportunity. If you have further questions, please contact your guidance counselor: Last name A L: Mrs. Ferguson , Last name M Z: Miss Sells

Wednesday, August 27: Job Shadowing assignment is due! ****Hand in your report to your social studies teacher. TELEPHONE SCRIPT This is a SAMPLE script. We suggest that you use your own words when contacting your job shadowing host. Part A Hi! My name is. I am an 8th grade student at Northmont Middle School. We are having a Job Shadowing Day this summer. I would like to spend a day shadowing someone in your profession, and I must complete the project before August 19th. Will you help me? I will call you back one week before our Job Shadowing Day to make final arrangements. When I call back, who should I ask for? ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Part B 1. WHERE do I meet you? 2. What TIME do I meet you, and how long should I plan to stay? 3. What are our LUNCH arrangements? Shall I plan to pack a lunch or buy one? 4. Is there any particular way I should DRESS? 5. Is there additional information that will help me prepare for my day with you? 6. Where should I have my parent pick me up when the day is over?

5 JOB SHADOWING HOST LETTER (DELIVER TO HOST COMPANY BEFORE JOB SHADOWING TO HELP EXPLAIN THE PROJECT) Dear Host of Northmont Middle School Job Shadowing Participant: Thank you for hosting one of our eighth grade students. We hope this letter will answer some of your questions about Job Shadowing Day. Why are eighth graders involved in Job Shadowing? As students prepare to enter high school, they must make important decisions about course selections. Looking at their career goals is a way to motivate students to think about their educational programs. Students who get an education with a purpose are more likely to have meaningful high school experiences. What is my responsibility to the student on this day? We hope that you can perform your job in a normal manner with the student observing. Any hands on experiences you provide will help the student stay involved. Feel free to share your job expertise with your student. The student will have a series of questions to ask you about your job (e.g. training, hours, salary) How long will the student be with me? This is up to you and the student. We suggest a full workday, but we realize that a half day is often more feasible. We hope that the student can spend at least 4 hours with you. What do I need to tell the student in advance? Students need to know where and when to meet you, where and when to be picked up, and what the lunch arrangements are. Please let students know your dress expectations. Why do I have to fill out a questionnaire? Your feedback is very important to us in evaluating and improving this day. Also, we need confirmation that the student spent the day with you. Comments from previous years definitely encourage us to continue this activity. If you have any other specific questions, please call us. We look forward to reading your evaluations after this day occurs. Thank you for substantially contributing to this student s education! Northmont Middle School Guidance Office (937) Janet Ferguson, Counselor (937) Kelly Sells, Counselor (937) John Stekli, Principal
