2 Study Abroad programs for Political Science majors Programs in Europe Czech Republic Anglo American University Founded in 1990, Anglo-American University (AAU) is a small, independent Liberal Arts College with western-style undergraduate-level courses taught in English. The campus is located at the center of Prague, situated at the foot of the castle hill. AAU offers both semester and summer programs Denmark Danish Institute for Study Abroad (DIS) The DIS program is located at the very center of medieval Copenhagen, in a beautifully restored building from Semester and summer programs are available. Summer students can choose to participate in one or two three week sessions and take one course per session. All programs include an excursion, either within Denmark or to another country in Europe. Ireland University of Limerick Limerick, with a population of 80,000 is the fourth largest city in Ireland. Located on Ireland s west coast, Limerick is within easy reach of Ireland s Cliffs of Moher. With a student population over 12,000, the University of Limerick teaches across a variety of disciplines. The campus located outside the city of Limerick offers a comfortable learning and living atmosphere for students. The University of Limerick offers semester and year programs. Italy American University of Rome Founded in 1969, The American University of Rome is the oldest degree-granting American university in Rome. The university is located on top of the Janiculum, Rome s highest hill, in a garden of Roman Pines, offering a spectacular view of the city and the surrounding hills. Courses are taught in English. Semester and summer programs offered. The Netherlands University of Groningen The city of Groningen is two and a half hours north-west of Amsterdam by train and three hours by train from Hamburg, Germany. The University is located in and around Groningen, a city of 180,000 inhabitants founded some 950 years ago, and is the cultural, regional and business capital of the North of the Netherlands. This is a tuition-exchange program, making it a low-cost program option. Students may participate in a semester or academic year exchange. United Kingdom Kingston University Kingston University is based in Kingston upon Thames, a busy riverside town on the borders of London and Surrey. Located just 25 minutes by train from the center of London, Kingston offers a quiet setting with easy access to all of the activities in London. Students can choose from a summer, semester or academic year program. University of Cambridge The University of Cambridge is one of the world s oldest universities; its reputation for outstanding academic achievement is known worldwide. Taught by a mixture of leading Cambridge lecturers and guest subject specialists from beyond the University, the Summer Schools are an opportunity to experience Cambridge first-hand. Stirling University Dominated by the famous Stirling Castle, the city boasts an attractive blend of modern shopping and leisure facilities and historic architecture. With convenient access to Scotland s railway and bus systems, Glasgow and Edinburgh are within easy travel distance, as are Scotland s major cities and the Scottish Highlands. Stirling University offers summer and semester programs. Africa Ghana ISEP-Exchange-University of Ghana The University of Ghana is the largest university in Ghana and currently enrolls 26,000 students. The campus is located approximately 13 kilometers northeast of Accra, the capital of Ghana. Students may choose from a wide variety of academic disciplines. This is a tuition-exchange program, making it a low-cost option. Students may choose to study at the University of Ghana for a semester or academic year. Volunteer opportunities are available. South Africa University of Stellenbosch Located in the Western Cape of South Africa, approximately 35 miles from Cape Town, Stellenbosch was founded in Stellenbosch University is a modern university with nearly 25,000 students. Although most instruction is in Afrikaans, Stellenbosch offers a variety of courses in English for visiting students. Summer and semester programs available.
3 Asia China CIEE-Shanghai, China Known for its economic prowess and long history of foreign influence, Shanghai is China s financial and industrial capital. The last decade has seen massive development in this metropolis of over 19 million, but student s can still find the legacy of Shanghai s past. Students study at the CIEE Study Center. All courses are taught in English, except the Chinese language courses. Middle East Jordan CIEE - Amman, Jordan Amman has a history that reaches back at least 5,000 years. Draped over several hills, Amman is a study in contrasts. A traditional downtown souk (marketplace) is a taxi ride away from massive, American-style shopping malls. It is a very accessible, cosmopolitan city with numerous museums, art galleries, theaters, and cinemas. The program is designed for students who have an interest in Jordan and the Middle East. Courses are taught in English and all students enroll in an Arabic language course. Semester and academic year options are available. The summer program is an intensive Arabic language program. Oceania Australia Edith Cowan University Edith Cowan University is located in Perth, Western Australia, which is a vibrant, sophisticated city. ECU is a modern, innovative university, well known for its award winning facilities. All campuses are wireless and offer state of the art facilities and equipment. ECU offers both semester and full year opportunities. University of Wollongong The University is located in the city of Wollongong, an hour s train ride south of Sydney. Wollongong offers many alternatives for shopping, and more energetic outdoor activities. The University of Wollongong has a student population of over 20,000 and offers semester and academic year options. ISEP Various Countries CMU is a member of the ISEP consortium, which offers study abroad opportunities in forty countries around the world. Some possible options for Political Science students include Finland, Sweden, South Korea, Bulgaria and Estonia. Tuition, room and board exchange available for most programs, making ISEP a low-cost program option. Many participating universities offer coursework in English. Complete an Internship for Credit Possible internship locations include: Australia Belize Germany Ghana Ireland New Zealand United Kingdom Students wishing to participate in a for-credit internship must work with Study Abroad Programs in selecting an internship site. Study a Language Speaking a second language can greatly enhance your degree, especially for political science students. Students can choose to continue their studies of languages taught at CMU: Arabic Chinese French German Japanese Spanish Students may also choose to enroll in a language course not taught at CMU, while taking other courses in English (e.g. Italian). 4 Study Abroad by year Freshman Participate in a short-term faculty-led or summer program! CMU offers several short-term study abroad programs open to first-year students. Take courses towards general education requirements, electives, exploratory political science courses, or study language. It is possible to fulfill the University Program IV-B requirement by studying abroad for a summer. Your first semester at CMU is the ideal time to begin planning for a study abroad experience. Be sure to attend the Study Abroad Fair! Sophomore Participate in a semester study abroad program during the second semester of your sophomore year or participate in a summer or a short-term faculty-led program! Take political science courses, electives, study a language abroad, or fulfill the UP IV-B. Attend the Study Abroad Fair! Junior Study abroad for an entire academic year, for a semester, summer or participate in a short-term faculty-led program! Focus on your major or minor requirements, electives, study a language, or complete an internship abroad. Senior Complete your degree requirements, electives, or complete an internship abroad. Build your professional skills through participating in a program relevant to your career goals. We recommend studying abroad a semester prior your last semester at CMU. 5 Study Abroad how can i Afford it? If you want to study abroad but don t think you can afford to - you may be wrong! There are a variety of programs available at different lengths and costs. Studying abroad can be affordable! Some programs offer tuition, room and board for the equivalent cost of studying at CMU. Your Study Abroad advisor will provide you with a budget sheet detailing the costs of your program. There are a number of resources available to help fund your study abroad experience. Financial Aid Financial aid received may be applied to the cost of the program. It is also possible to apply for additional aid based on the program s actual cost (including airfare). Students are also typically able to use the scholarships that they currently receive at CMU. For additional information, contact the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, Warriner Hall 202, CMU Study Abroad Scholarships CMU students are invited to apply for a scholarship through the Study Abroad Programs office. Scholarship opportunities are also available through some academic departments or colleges and the Honors Program. Please contact the department for more information and application instructions. Gilman Scholarship The Gilman Scholarship is offered by the Institute of International Education. Award recipients can receive up to $5,000 to defray the costs associated with studying abroad. Applicants must receive a Pell Grant to be eligible to apply. For more information and application instructions, visit Freeman-ASIA The Freeman-ASIA Award Program is available to American undergraduates who study in East and Southeast Asia. Recipients are awarded up to $3,000 for summer, $5,000 for semester, and $7,000 for an academic year. 6 Studywhat Abroad is the process? Follow this easy step-by-step process: 1. Create a Study Abroad Profile Go to and select Get Started. You will be able to choose Create a Study Abroad Profile and complete an advising questionnaire so that the study abroad staff can better assist you. 2. Research Programs Online Use Choose Your Program search at the Study Abroad website at to explore the available programs. 3. Stop by the Study Abroad Programs office We invite you to come to the Study Abroad Programs office, located in Ronan 330, to learn more about the programs offered by CMU. You can meet with a peer advisor during the walk-in hours or be able to schedule an appointment with a study abroad advisor. 4. Meet with a study abroad advisor Call (989) or visit the Study Abroad Programs office to make an appointment. Your study abroad advisor will help you determine the program that best suits your goals and priorities as well as provide information about the application process, requirements, and finances. 5. Complete your study abroad application Once you have decided on the program your advisor will give you access to the study abroad application. You can then log on to your study abroad online account to start your application. Complete the online application questionnaires, signature documents, and request recommendations. Gather and submit materials to the Study Abroad Programs office by the deadline. 6. Meet with faculty advisors Meet with appropriate faculty advisors to obtain course credit approvals. All courses must be pre-approved to receive CMU credit. Some course credit approvals may be viewed online. 7. Meet with a financial aid advisor Only required for students who wish to apply for financial aid (this includes loans). Call (989) to make an appointment with an advisor in the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, Warriner Prepare for study abroad Participate in the study abroad pre-departure orientation. Information will be provided to apply for a passport, apply for visa if required, make flight arrangements, check into any health concerns, etc.
