Using the modem is very easy. The has a standard RS232 9 pin serial interface providing connection to a PC or other DTE and is ideal for embedded applications requiring GSM data communications. A SIM card holder is integrated within the system. The modem emulates an ordinary analogue modem interface and is compatible with existing data communication programs using AT commands. A disk is supplied with the AT commands that the modem needs. The can operate in data, fax, SMS and voice mode. The standard modem box can be easily installed using 2 screws and can be mounted either horizontally or vertically and is IP54 rated. The modem requires either a 12V or 24V dc supply and features an internal backup battery. The unit requires connection to the GSM network, this may also be provided by RF Solutions as a specific data modem service. INSTALLATION Mounting the module The mounting location must comply to the following environmental conditions: Temperature Range: Working conditions from -20 C to 60 C Charging conditions from 0 C to 40 C. The backup battery will not be charged outside this temperature range. Power Supply In the PWR/AUX connector pin 15 must be tied to, e.g. Pin 14, otherwise the modem will not power up. Pin 16 is power supply +, and Pin 17 is power supply. The input voltage must be between 9 and 28 volt, and minimum of 4 watt power. Note: Do not connect the antenna ground plane to the charger modem ground. Doing this may damage the unit. Voltage If the voltage drops below 9 volts, the modem will start using the backup battery. 2 BACKUP BATTERY Your modem has an internal backup battery. The management of the battery is done by the modem. Once a month the modem will discharge the battery and charge it up to full capacity again, this will extend the lifetime of the backup battery. During the discharge, which takes approx.30 minutes, the modem will not be accessible. After approx.45 minutes the battery will be fully charged again. If the modem is working in a temperature below O C or above 40 C the backup battery will not be charged, and the standby time will fall. NETWORK CONNECTION Your network provider will supply you with a plug-in SIM for use with your modem. Remember that the SIM must support Data service. This SIM is your personal key to the digital GSM network. All information needed to connect you to the network and to initiate billing for your calls is stored in the gold plated area of the SIM card, along with names, numbers and messages you have entered into the phone book or received. To prevent losing or corrupting information avoid touching the gold area and do not place the SIM near electrical or magnetic fields. A damaged SIM will not allow you to access the GSM network. INSERTING THE SIM The SIM will probably be supplied in a cardholder and you will need to carefully press it free before fitting. Switch off the modem, by disconnecting the PWR/AUX connector (DB25). Insert the SIM under the two lugs so that the gold area is facing down. Engage the lock, and attach the led and screws. UNLOCKING THE SIM To prevent unauthorised use, the SIM can be protected by a PIN1 code. Each time the modem has been switched off the pin code must be entered. If you enter the wrong PIN code three times in succession, your SIM will be barred from the network and the modem will require a PUK code. CONNECTING TO THE NETWORK After unlocking the SIM, the modem will make an automatic search for your home network or another suitable network operator in your location. 4 The LED indicator also has the following flash speeds: Normal, In Service: The LED will flash on and off at the rate of once a second. Information, Missed Calls, Low Battery, SMS Messages etc: The LED flashes twice and then extinguishes. Alert, Incoming Call: The LED will flash four times and then go off.
