Siemens DECT Engine MD32 2/16 Product Description
1 Functionality 1.1 Modes of Operation Configuration The Siemens DECT Engine MD32 can be configured to any of three different modes of operation: V.24 Replacement (Portable Part) V.24 Replacement FP (Fixed Part) V.24 Server FP (Fixed Part) The Configuration Mode is entered with a specific sequence on the RS232 signal RTS or by submitting a special escape sequence to the module via the V.24 interface. After submitting this sequence the DECT Engine interprets all data arriving at the serial interface as AT commands. The commands implemented are a subset of the V.25ter commands with extensions for accessing internal configuration registers (S-register). These registers are kept as a profile in the permanent memory of the Siemens DECT Engine MD32. After the configuration mode is exited either by AT command or reset, the module starts operating in the configured mode. This applies also for activation of the module by power-on. The configuration data of a fixed part are retained when reconfiguring the module as a portable part and vice versa. The Siemens DECT Engine may operate in only one mode at a given time. It is possible to change the mode of operation by resetting the module and reconfiguring it V.24 Replacement /FP This mode allows replacement of the RS232 cable of a point to point connection (e.g. a PC to a PC) by a point to-point radio link. The Siemens DECT Engine emulates an RS232 cable and transfers information on the RS232 circuits transparently to a V.24 Replacement FP/V.24 Server FP in both directions using an error correction protocol conformant with the LU10 standard. This assures a BER of less than A V.24 Replacement can enroll in up to 6 fixed parts (FP). A V.24 Replacement FP can enroll in up to 16 Portable Parts (). The subscription can be done in two different ways. The first way is to start a subscription procedure in the and the FP together with an optional PIN using an AT command. All the required information is exchanged on air. The second possibility is to exchange this information under control of the host application using AT commands. Switching between portable or fixed part mode is only possible during configuration. Once a or FP is selected only point-to-point connections are possible. 4 DTE (PC) MD32 DECT MD32 FP RX RX TX TX RTS RTS CTS CTS DTR DTR DSR DSR DCD DCD RI RI DTE (PC) Example of a Zero Modem Connection using V.24 Replacement /FP V.24 Sever FP This mode allows control of up to 16 V.24 Replacement s running 4 connections at the same time. For this reason a special packet-oriented V.24 protocol has been introduced that supports up to 16 virtual V.24 interfaces. This protocol maps up to 16 physical RS232 interfaces related to the 16 enrolled V.24 Replacement s to the physical RS232 interface of the V.24 Server FP. A packet of this protocol contains an address header, a status field with the RS232 control signals of the corresponding V.24 Replacement, a length field and a data field. The host application has to support this protocol. The following picture shows the topology of this operation environment with 4 concurrent connections: DCE Appl. 1 FP DCE Appl. 2 FP DCE Appl. 15 FP Virtual World Virtual COM1 Virtual COM2 Virtual COM15 Physical COM Physical World MD32 Physical 1 COM1 2 Server Multi Link 15 Physical COM2 MD32 FP DTE Appl. 1 Physical COM15 Appl. 2 DTE DTE Appl. 15 DCE Appl. 16 FP Virtual COM16 Host Computer e. g. PC 16 Physical COM16 Appl. 16 DTE Note, that only HW handshake is possible between the virtual V.24 interface within the host system and the physical RS232 interface of the terminal! With the first request for data transfer of either the server host or the terminal host, a connection is established at the DECT level. The time this link is held active after data have been transmitted can be set by AT commands. There are two basic different scenarios depending on the setting of this time: If the time until an automatic release is very long, four established links will block further terminals from contacting the server. This may induce delay if a terminal wants to start a transaction with the host. On the other hand, response times for the established links are quite short. This scenario resembles circuit-switched data transfer. It is recommended when the DECT link is part of a connection which uses telephone networks. If the waiting time is very short, the radio link will be released shortly after the Siemens DECT Engine MD32 4/16 Product Description
transmission of the data packet. Consequently, the server module is freed to respond to connections from other terminals. This scenario resembles packet-switched data. It should be used when the terminal is connected to data networks via ethernet. 1.2 Multicell Systems The following figure gives an example of a multicell environment with two V.24 Server FPs and four V.24 Replacement s. A V.24 Replacement leaving the coverage area of an DP is indicated by LOC_IND = OFF. The DECT Engine switches to another FP automatically. As an alternative this switching to another FP can be done under control of the terminal host using an AT command. When changing the FP an active data transmission is aborted and buffered data are lost. The host application has to consider this FP FP V.24 V.24 4 PC Siemens DECT Engine MD32 5/16 Product Description
2 Host Interface A 20-pin connector (AVX ) for Flat Flexible Cables (FFC) of 0.5- mm pitch and 0.3-mm thickness connects the module to the host device. It has the following interfaces. 2.1 Data Interface The Data Interface is realized with a serial asynchronous transmitter and receiver according to TTU-T RS232 Interchange Circuits DCE. It is set to 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit and can be run at 9.6 kbps or 19.2 kbps. In-band (HW handshake via RTS/CTS) and out-band (via XON/XOFF) flow control is supported. In addition, the modem control signals DTR, DSR, DCE and RI are available. The Data interface works at 3.3V TTL RS232 without level shifters for +/- 12V signal levels. The polarity of the signals is therefore inverted, e.g. off is high TTL level, on low TTL level. 2.2 Control Signals The following control signals are available (3V TTL level): Inputs: RST =1 0 edge the DECT Engine will be reset =0 or 1 normal operation PON =0 power save mode (all voltage regulators switched off), no operation =1 DECT Engine is switched on (active) Outputs: LOCK_IND =0 Siemens DECT Engine (configured as ) is locked on FP (e.g. there is a base station within reach to which the terminal DECT Engine is subscribed) =1 Siemens DECT Engine (configured as ) is unlocked on FP (e.g. there is no base station within reach to which the terminal DECT Engine is subscribed) RI =0 Ring Indicate (indicates a incoming call). Wakeup of host application. =1 No Operation Siemens DECT Engine MD32 6/16 Product Description
2.3 Power Supply A single +5V voltage supplies the module. Linear regulators stabilize the supply voltages for the DECT Controller and for the RF part. A DECT Engine changes automatically to standby mode when the air link to the base station is released. The delay between sending the last data and release of the link can be adjusted by AT commands during configuration. The standby mode is exited when a new link has to be established (either by incoming data on the serial line or a request from the base station). An FP DECT Engine has no power-reduced mode for it is constantly sending although no link is established. This is required in order to keep the corresponding DECT Engine(s) synchronized to the FP. All linear regulators can be switched off by the DECT Controller if the PON signal is not active. The module is then in the power save mode. No Rx/Tx modes are possible. The Siemens DECT Engine can be switched on again with PON = active. Siemens DECT Engine MD32 7/16 Product Description

3 Radio Interface The DECT Controller handles all signal and data processing needed within a DECT device. Internal software runs the host interface and the whole DECT protocol stack. A UART forms the interface to the host system. Internal ROM stores the program SW and flash memory-permanent parameters. RAM is used for data buffers and registers. The RF part of the DECT Engine MD32 is based on Siemens one-chip transceiverintegrated circuit using B6HF bipolar technology. To achieve maximum output power, modern GaAs-FET technology is established during final power amplifier stages. The DECT Engine MD32 provides excellent signal quality even in poor RF environments by supporting antenna diversity capability. If the Siemens DECT Engine MD32 is configured as, the antenna diversity switch is fixed to one position. The position can be modified by AT command. The module allows connection of two types of antennae. Wire antennae are clipped to holes in the PCB. They will be delivered with each DECT Engine. For applications with external antennae, it is possible to solder 50-ohm PCB mount angle cable terminator for the external antenna coax cable type SUHNER 86 MCX The solder pads are 50-ohm matched. For each type there are two connection points to support antenna diversity. Siemens DECT Engine MD32 9/16 Product Description
