During my time at uni, I have worked as a freelance editor for organisations including Disability SA and the Royal Society for the Blind. I also picked up work experience at Channel Seven after their Director of News saw my work at UniSA s television industry night. Channel Nine was also impressed with my work on industry night and offered the opportunity to interview for a position. I got the job at Channel Nine and I am currently working there as a full-time Editor. I have learnt so much and I have had some great opportunities during my degree. It was easily the best three years of my life. I ve made lifelong friends as well as real work industry contacts. 9

14 Bachelor of Journalism and Professional Writing MBJR 12 Writing success Isabella Pittaway Graduate, Journalism and Writing A combination of volunteering and university placements culminated in Isabella s break into the journalism industry. Work experience is so important and the placements during my degree have been some of the best experiences of my study. Through my degree I have undertaken placements with the ABC and The Australian. I also won a scholarship to participate in an internship with Radio National s The Science Show and volunteered at Fresh 92.7 and Radio Adelaide. These were great opportunities to further develop skills, write stories, get published or broadcast, begin developing a portfolio and to network with those in the industry. My involvement in these endeavours culminated in being awarded the 2014 SA Media Awards Julie Duncan Memorial Award for Student Journalism, which was an honour to receive. These experiences were possible because the teaching staff at UniSA were so supportive and encouraging. I felt they wanted to see students achieve their best. 16 Bachelor of Communication and Media MBCD 14 A dream career Belinda Scott Graduate, Bachelor of Public Relations (now Bachelor of Communication and Media) Belinda had reached the height of her career and was looking for something more. She decided to return to study for a complete career change. I had previously been in the hospitality, travel and tourism industries and felt like it was time for a change, although I still wanted to stay in a peoplecentric role, Belinda said. Coupled with an interest in media, I felt it was a natural progression for me to pursue a career in public relations. Studying had been at the back of my mind for years, and the best thing about returning as a mature-age student is that I had developed confidence, real-world skills and leadership capabilities that translated well into my degree. I was so well equipped and connected that I secured a job even before graduating. The best preparation was the various internships attained through the uni, as well as the relationships I forged through the regular networking and professional development events.
