1 Meersbrook Bank Community Primary School Sex and Relationships Education (SRE) Policy What is sex and relationships education? It is lifelong learning about physical, moral, and emotional development...effective SRE is essential if young people are to make responsible well informed choices DFES Sex and Relationships Education Guidance Through our SRE programme we aim to: 1. Respect the values and beliefs of the school community. 2. Give our pupils the ability/skills to: Communicate a point of view clearly and appropriately and listen to the views of others Make sensible choices about what to do in particular situations Manage relationships with friends confidently and effectively Act responsibly as an individual and as a member of a group Judge what is and what is not appropriate behaviour within different relationships. 3. Deliver these aims from Every Child Matters : be healthy children and young people are mentally and emotionally healthy, children and young people are sexually healthy stay safe children and young people are safe from maltreatment, neglect, violence and sexual exploitation. Children and young people are safe from bullying and discrimination make a positive contribution children and young people develop positive relationships and choose not to bully or discriminate. Children and young people develop self-confidence and successfully deal with significant life changes and challenges. 4. Fulfil the requirements of the science curriculum and the DFES non-statutory guidance on SRE. 1

2 This will be achieved by: Generating a trusting, safe atmosphere where questions of a sexual nature can be asked and answered openly and without embarrassment when appropriate Making SRE an integral part of our PSHE programme Using circle time, and the setting of ground rules, to foster trust, security and openness Having an agreed glossary of terms to support all staff and pupils in their teaching and learning Following a structured programme in years 5 and 6 to address issues which are appropriate to their age including human reproduction, awareness of the sexual organs and their functions and the changes they will face in puberty The SRE programme will be delivered by adults with whom the children are familiar with or in conjunction with trained health professionals Endeavouring to answer the children s questions honestly and if necessary do so on a one to one basis if the question is judged by the teacher to be inappropriate for the whole group. The teacher will use the agreed glossary of definitions to answer questions about different aspects of sex and sexuality. Parental Involvement We will: Consult parents in the review of the policy, resources and teaching programme Provide a meeting for all parents of the children involved to meet with the teachers and discuss the teaching programme The National Curriculum and Early Years Foundation Stage programmes of study include: Foundation Stage Knowledge and understanding (including changes). Key Stage 1 1b) that animals including humans, feed, move, grow and use their senses and reproduce 2a) to recognise and compare the main external parts of the bodies of Humans 2f) that humans and animals can produce offspring and these grow into Adults 4a) to recognise similarities and differences between themselves and others, and treat others with sensitivity. 2

3 Key Stage 2 1a) that the life processes common to humans and other animals include nutrition, growth and reproduction 1f) about the main stages of the human life cycle. How will SRE be monitored and evaluated? It will be monitored by the headteacher and governors It will be evaluated through teacher reflections and evaluations and through children questionnaires. The policy will be reviewed biannually unless there is new legislation or guidance from the government Child Protection and Confidentiality Teachers cannot offer or guarantee absolute confidentiality and this is made clear to the children in accordance with the child protection policy. Teachers have the responsibility to report to the child protection officer (in the first instance the Inclusion Manager then the headteacher) any disclosure or concern they have about an individual and should follow the school s procedure in reporting their concerns. All staff must be aware that effective SRE education, which brings an understanding of what is and what is not acceptable in a relationship, can lead to disclosure of a child protection issue. All staff should be aware of issues of confidentiality and follow the school s confidentiality policy. In the setting of ground rules the children will be made aware that any discussions held in classroom setting are confidential to the people in that setting and should not be brought outside. 4 Appendix 2 Examples of ground rules No one (adult or pupil) will have to answer a personal question No one will be forced to contribute to a discussion Only the correct names for body parts will be used Meanings of words and terms will be explained in a factual and sensible way Sex and Relationships Policy Glossary of Terms. This list of terms is to be used by staff according to the needs of the child or as required by the curriculum. Abortion an operation to end a pregnancy. Abstinence when someone does not have sexual intercourse. Aids/HIV a disease/condition which weakens the immune system, contracted through unprotected sex or contact with infected bodily fluids. Age of consent The age at which it is legal for people of both sexes to have sexual intercourse. 16. Bisexual a term used to describe men and women who are attracted to (and may have sex with) both the same and opposite gender. Breasts The glands on a woman s chest which produce milk when her baby is born. Celibate when a person decides not to take part in sexual activity. Cervix- a ring muscle at the lower end of the uterus where it joins the vagina. Clitoris the female sex organ that produces feelings of pleasure when stimulated. Condom a rubber sheath worn on the penis or inside the vagina (female condom femidom) to protect against pregnancy and STI s. Contraception a drug or device which helps to prevent pregnancy. (pill- a tablet taken daily to prevent pregnancy; coil a device inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy; condom- see above; cap a device worn to prevent pregnancy, morning after pill a tablet taken after intercourse to prevent pregnancy) 4

5 Ejaculation when the sperm is released from the penis during orgasm. Erection when the penis fills with blood and becomes hard. Fallopian tube The tube that runs from each ovary to the womb. This is the tube along which the ovum travels. Fertilisation When the reproductive cells ( sperm and ovum) join together. French kiss when two people kiss each other on the mouth and touch tongues. Gay (homosexual) A term used for men and women who are attracted to (and may have sex with) the same gender. Genitals the sex organs of men and women Grooming when an adult tries to make contact and make friends with a child in order to hurt them ( have a sexual relationship with them) Heterosexual the term for men and women who are attracted ( and may have sex with) someone of the opposite gender Hysterectomy when a woman has an operation to remove her uterus for medical reasons. Hormones chemical substances that are produced by glands which control the development of the body. Implantation - When a fertilised ovum embeds into the lining of the uterus. Inappropriate touch When someone touches you in a place that you are not comfortable with Intercourse have sex with - (anal when the penis is put into the anus. - Vaginal when the penis is put into the vagina.) Labia ( inner/outer)/lips The folds of skin that protect the opening of the vagina. Lesbian - A term for women who are attracted to (and may have sex with) women. 5

6 Love bite a bruise that results from sucking on the skin. Male circumcision The foreskin is removed for religious or health reasons. Masturbation Touching your own sex organs for pleasure. Menopause The time when a woman becomes too old to have children. The ovaries stop producing ova and her periods stop. Nipple The darker part of skin and teat on a woman s breast or a man s chest. The baby sucks milk from here on a woman. Oestrogen- a female sex hormone. Oral sex when a person kisses or licks another persons sex organs. Orgasm A feeling of pleasure at the climax of sexual activity. Ovary(ies) the female reproductive organ(s) where the ova are produced. Ovum a female egg cell. Paedophile An adult who tries to have a sexual relationships with a child. Penis The male sex organ. Periods The breakdown of the lining of the womb. This happens approximately every 28 days. A small amount of blood is lost the vagina. through Placenta A structure that is formed between the embryo and the uterine lining. This enables the growing baby to obtain food and oxygen from its mother s blood. Pregnancy When a woman has a baby growing in her uterus (in a special place) Progesterone a female sex hormone. Puberty the period when sex organs become active. It begins early in adolescence and ends when a young person is fully developed. Puberty happens at different ages and is marked by the growth of pubic hair, changes in the body shape etc Pubic bone Front part of the pelvis immediately above the external sex organs. 6

7 Rape When someone has intercourse with someone against their will. Sanitary Protection a tampon or towel which collects blood during a period. ( Tampon a compressed towel for use inside the vagina to collect blood lost during a woman s period. Sanitary towel a towel to stick inside the knickers, used to collect blood during a woman s period) Scrotum Sack that holds the testes outside the body. Semen The fluid that contains sperm and is ejaculated when a man has an orgasm. Sex refer to Intercourse Sperm Male seed that is necessary to fertilise the ovum. Sexually transmitted infection (STI) - a disease/virus that can be contracted through contact with sex organs. ( Chlamydia, syphilis, genital warts, H.I.V, gonorrhoea) Testicles (testes) Two male sex organs that produce sperm and male sex hormones. Umbilical cord - The tube that joins the foetus ( growing baby) to the placenta. Unprotected sex When someone has intercourse without taking precautions against pregnancy or STI s. Urethra The tube through which urine travels from the bladder to outside the body. Uterus (womb) The female organ in which a baby (embryo) develops. Vasectomy An operation in a man to stop the sperm from flowing through the tube. Vagina The passageway from the cervix to outside the body. Viagra A drug given to a man to enable him to have an erection. Vulva The external female sex organs. Wet dream When a boy/man ejaculates in their sleep. This is common during puberty. 7
