This presentation Purpose of the publication on novel practices Challenges of setting up the first three KICs Practices developed by KICs EIT in the wider European context Summing up 2
EIT at the heart of the Knowledge Triangle Research and Technology New knowledge is the source of innovation Business opportunities point to new research avenues New knowledge improves education Skills are a key input in research and development Business Skills are a key input in innovation Knowledge of new market developments is important for education Higher Education
About the publication... The first EIT publication on practices in the implementation of the specific knowledge triangle agenda. Too early to speak of good practices The purpose is to showcase interesting and novel practices resulting from the first operational years of the KICs contextualised on the European innovation landscape. The publication addressed to a broad audience, including policy makers, innovation practitioners and analysts, as well as the new generation of KICs. Written by a team of Technopolis with Becky Allinson, Kincsö Izsak, Elina Griniece as lead authors with support from Alasdair Reid and Patries Boekholt 4
Novel practices on key EIT features Forms of organising the chain of education, research and innovation Education models across borders and disciplines Practices to support entrepreneurship Bridging the innovation gap 5
Challenges in setting up the KICs Organising distributed eco-systems linking education, research and innovation Complexity of setting up the partnerships Geographically dispersed Independent member organisations Implications of a separate KIC structure (e.g. legal structure) Trust and community building needed Multi-stakeholder set up Balancing act between adhering to the business model and maintaining multi-stakeholder involvement 6
Organisation practices developed by EIT / KICs KICs are set up as legal entities Commitment for 7-15 years Financial models following an entrepreneurial logic with EIT seed money (25%) First two years already a significant private sector commitment Business type organisation A CEO responsible for strategy & business plan Developing a portfolio of assets Lean administrations Matrix management model with Co-Location Centre Directors and Education, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Directors Climate: Regional Implementation and Innovation Communities 7
Catalyst role (1): leveraging money EIT 167M Other EU 105M Other 39M Members 299M Nat & Reg Govts. 167M 8
Catalyst role (2): networks of networks Climate-KIC CLC Climate-KIC RIC ICT Labs CLC ICT Labs Associated Partner KIC InnoEnergy CLC 9
Practices structured around the innovation challenges People - the talent challenge, by nurturing a talent pool and aligning it with innovation project opportunities; and through new types of education improving the ability to deal with change and uncertainty and preparing new interdisciplinary boundary spanning competencies; Market - the European innovation paradox, through a strong market-orientation and commercialisation of research results; Organisation - the open innovation challenge, through connecting scattered points of knowledge to create synergies and optimise chains of innovation; Partnerships - leveraging private investment. 10
Novel practices explored People: KIC InnoEnergy Master and PhD Schools, the EIT Label for education Spotlight: ICT Master School Spotlight: Climate KIC thejourney Market: Climate Market Accelerator; KIC InnoEnergy Innovation projects; ICT Lab Business Catalysts Spotlight: the KIC InnoEnergy Highway Organisation: Explore House of KIC InnoEnergy; ICT Experience and living labs, Climate KIC innovation and pathfinder Partnerships - leveraging private investment. 11
Spotlight: ICT Labs Master School Creation of a new set of Master s courses designed to work across Europe Joint venture between 21 of the KIC s universities and business schools Integration of innovation and entrepreneurship into the engineering curricula 200 students to be admitted in 2012 (out of 800 applications) Students enter at one institution and exit from another Active links with industrial partners In future also internships at KIC start-ups 12
Spotlight: Climate KIC thejourney Multi-disciplinary educational opportunities across European KICs in an intensive summer school setting (5 weeks) In students, in Entrepreneurship training also from business partners in the KIC Working towards potential business solutions As a result of the first Journey 4 start-ups were created that have attracted external funding An alumni network set up to maintain networks between the participants Integrate elements of thejourney in Master s and Doctoral Programmes 13
Spotlight: the KIC InnoEnergy Highway Specialised business creation process in sustainable energy Aim is to create start-ups and spin-offs Service-for-equity Five sets of Highway Gates from first idea to post-incubation Not just ordinary Business Incubators but specialised in sustainable energy Linked to the local networks of each Location but with shared systems, knowledge and capability building Early involvement of potential first customers (through the KIC networks and partners) Series of venture capital funds attached 14
EIT: a unique position in European research and innovation policy Excellent Science Competitive industries Agenda for new skills and jobs Eco- Innovation Action Plan HORIZON 2020 Cohesion Policy/ smart specialisation agendas Digital Agenda Better society EIT Industrial policy/ enabling technologies and clusters Youth on the Move Europe
Summing up The launch of EIT and its KICs is the first European initiative linking research, business and education across borders EIT s key role is not the direct funding but leveraging local, regional, national and European & public and private funding and networks Potential innovation power of re-organising existing eco-systems The first three KICs have managed to set up novel governance models for quite complex multi-stakeholder networks Various interesting practices have been launched by the KICs to foster education, innovation and business development linked to excellent research in the host centres This is just the start!
Still work in progress with open questions How can we further the role of the EIT in strengthening publicprivate innovation communities and connecting them across Europe? What are the next challenges for the EIT in terms of contributing to breaking down the barriers to fragmentation of the European innovation landscape? How can the EIT be instrumental in making a change in education programmes and nurturing the game changers? 17
Thank you technopolis group has offices in Amsterdam, Ankara, Brighton, Brussels, Frankfurt/Main, Paris, Stockholm, Tallinn and Vienna 18
