2 WELCOME!!!! Irashamaisu Marhaba Willkommen Bienvenidos Benvenuto Isibingelelo Witaj Bienvenue Greetings YWLCS Parents and Families! We are thrilled to begin our 5th year of afterschool programming here at YWLCS. Chicago Youth Centers provides a variety of activities for your daughter after school. The goal of our program is to support your daughter both academically and personally in a safe environment after school. CYC will provide time every day for homework support and tutoring. After an hour of academic based programming, CYC offers extracurricular activities that will challenge your daughter, introduce her to new skills, and give her space to meet new friends. Please take a moment to review the parent manual and complete the registration packet and parent/student contract. If you have any question or concerns, please do not hesitate to call Nicolette Giblin at extension 413. Looking forward to a great year, Nicolette Giblin ngiblin@ywlcs.org x 413 Hello Everyone! My name is Latasha Battie and I am the Director of Community Schools for Chicago youth Centers 21 st CCLC program. It is part of my responsibility to ensure your continued success, not only through our after-school programs, but in all your future endeavors. With that said, we are offering a variety of programs/clubs designed to enrich your academic, health, social, recreational, and family engagement experiences. This handbook serves as an introduction to the programs offered at YWLCS. As you read through it, you will find the program rules and regulations and expectations for you and from the program staff. We have great things planned for you and we are excited to provide these opportunities for you. Sincerely, Latasha Battie, Ed.S. 3 WELCOME TO THE 21 ST CENTURY AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM! Chicago Youth Centers Mission Chicago Youth Centers invest in kids in under-served communities in the Chicago region to help them to discover and realize their full potential. In partnership with Chicago Youth Centers, Young Women s Leadership Charter School offers after school programs Monday through Friday from 3:30-6:00pm. Program Description Chicago Youth Centers has partnered with your school to coordinate community resources through partnerships to offer fun and exciting academic, artistic, recreational, and cultural enrichments, as well as health and social services to students and their families after the school day has ended. Our Goals: Continue providing a safe and effective learning environment Develop direct relationships with outside communities and schools to bring additional resources to the school Create opportunities that will directly impact your learning experience Provide a structure for a fun time while engaging in new and creative experiences! To provide the greatest learning experience for our students we have developed the following rules and regulations. Registration Forms All students must be registered to attend program. In order to register, we ask that a registration packet be completed in its entirety. Student Drop/Change of Program Forms These forms are to be used when the student is to be dropped from a specific activity and/or wishes to change their activity. Students are not allowed to drop/change program without an official form completed by the parent. Attendance Policy Our attendance policy is designed to accommodate the growing need to provide quality programs. Therefore, we encourage regular attendance so your child can receive the full benefits of the program. In order to maintain space in the program, we require that your child attend a minimum of 2 days per week. Attendance for each student is taken and entered on a daily basis. Students must also attend the clubs/activities that they signed up for. If attendance becomes a challenge for any reason, please speak with the Site Coordinator so that your child does not lose her space in the program. For the safety of our students, parents will be notified on a weekly basis on the status of their child (ren s) attendance. Hours of Operation CYC 21 st Century Student-Parent Handbook 3

4 During the school year, CYC 21 st CCLC afterschool program operates Monday through Friday from 4:00 to 6:00pm. Throughout the program year, some special Saturday program activities may also be scheduled. If summer program activities are offered, you will receive information regarding those program hours. Transportation Policy Chicago Youth Centers policy states that children eight years and younger must be picked up by a parent/guardian or another authorized adult, or a sibling fourteen years or older at the end of each program day. A child will only be released to his/her parents/guardians or the individuals listed on the child Program Release Form who presents a valid ID. With parental consent, children ages nine and older are permitted to leave CYC s programs unescorted to walk and/or take public transportation to their home. Without parental consent, the child must be picked up by one of the adults listed on the Child Release Program Form. Students will not be allowed to leave without consent from the parent/guardian indicating which method they will be dismissed from the after-school program. In the event of an emergency, you are asked to call the office or program phone. Please refrain from calling your child on his or her cell phone during program hours. Snacks We provide a healthy snack every day for each student in the program. Academic Achievement Policy Chicago Youth Centers program staff will collaborate with the school and teachers regarding academic achievement. We believe that it is our responsibility to provide your child with opportunities that enrich their academic experiences. We believe that academic achievement and school come before any extracurricular activities. Therefore, we offer homework help and tutoring on a regular basis. If your child grades are not in good standing she will be required to attend homework help or tutoring until satisfactory academic performance can be achieved. Respect to Staff, Property & Others It is expected and required that all students exhibit respect for themselves, their peers, staff and their property. We expect that students express themselves in a manner which is appropriate for our environment, can engage in meaningful experiences and work towards a resolution when there is disagreement, and recognize personal boundaries in respect to property. Guidance and Discipline The goal of guidance and discipline is to help your child develop personal responsibility, self-control, self-direction, and self-esteem. CYC 21 st Century Community Learning Center is an extension of the school day, therefore, all rules that apply to students during the regular school hours will be adhered to in the after school program. CYC will follow protocol as set forth by YWLCS and will work in collaboration with the school to address all disciplinary issues. In the event that discipline issues arise, CYC has established the following actions: 1 st incident: program staff discusses the incident with the student and works with the child to change behavior CYC 21 st Century Student-Parent Handbook 4

5 2 nd incident: program staff discusses the incident with the student, works with the child to change behavior, (this could include referral to social emotional learning group), and calls the parent/guardian to discuss inappropriate behavior 3 rd incident: parent/guardian must meet with the program staff and the youth receives 1-3 days suspension from program. 4 th incident: program staff meets with parent/guardian and youth is dismissed from the program. Please Note: Any student who engages in extreme disruptive behavior and/or create a dangerous or unsafe condition for other students, staff, will result in an immediate suspension. This includes the following behaviors: Engaging in physical, verbal, emotional, or cyber threats, abuse or harassment Use, sale or distribution of a controlled substance Theft or vandalism of property Possessing weapons of any kind CYC 21 st Century Incentive Rewards Program Your child s attendance is very important to CYC. The more your child attends the program, the more she will benefit from learning new skills, meeting new friends and increasing academic achievement. Days Attended CYC Reward Star Color 5 Candy Bag Red 10 Student s Choice from Blue Small Prize Box 15 Student s Choice from Green Large Prize Box 20 Out of Uniform Silver 25 CYC Rewards Party Gold 30 Surprise Field Trip You re a 30 Day Star 60 Student s Choice Field Trip Double Gold Stars Field Trips In order to provide enriching program opportunities, we take several field trips each year to various locations. Field Trip Permission slips are given in advance of the trip. Field Trip Permission slips must be signed by a parent/guardian and returned to the Program Staff before the trip. Students without permission slips will not be allowed to attend the trip. We must have a signed permission slip for each student attending the trip. Under no circumstances will a verbal permission from a parent/guardian be accepted. Students who display constant disruptive behavior during program will not be allowed to participate in field trips and will need to go home after school on the field trip days. Field trips are only for students who are registered 21 st CCLC participants. Parent Involvement and Family Engagement Adult services under this grant can only be provided to adult family members of actively participating 21st CCLC students. Parents/Guardians are encouraged to participate in programs. Parents/guardians can volunteer, attend workshops, fieldtrips, and classes offered to adult participants. Evaluations: Periodically throughout the involvement in the program, students, parents, and teachers are asked to complete surveys. This provides us with an idea of how the student has changed over the course of the CYC 21 st Century Student-Parent Handbook 5

6 program and how we are doing. The surveys are critical to the program s success. They give us a good idea of how you feel about the program and enable us to improve the experience in the future.
