Island Offshore Subsea products, services & capabilities
Introduction Island Offshore provide products and services with focus on Increased Oil Recovery (IOR) through the use of Light Well Intervention (LWI) operations. The operations are performed from a monohull vessel and via specialized downhole tooling. The use of a dedicated LWI vessel provides reduced costs when compared to the use of a drilling rig for similar operations. Island Offshore Subsea (IOSS), part of the Island Offshore Group, Norway and Aberdeen Scotland to provide support for LWI operations. The following pages provide information on the capabilities, products, services and support available from IOSS. IOSS also provide engineering services, project engineering, project management, design engineering and Front End Engineering Design (FEED) studies for a range of additional products and services.
Light Well Intervention Capabilities IOSS specialize in developing and implementing innovative engineered solutions for Light Well Intervention to obtain increased oil recovery. Other subsea well operations using Island Offshore s dynamically positioned vessels can also be performed to replace drilling rigs, and hence offer reduced costs for subsea operations. accommodated from an LWI vessel. Mechanical failure downhole Mechanical failure in Xmas trees Flow assurance (e.g. scale, wax, hydrate) Reservoir monitoring (e.g. production logging) Reservoir work (e.g. zonal isolation, perforating) Well management (e.g. remedial stimulation) Recover Wellhead, Conductor and Guide Base Worldwide there are close to 5000 subsea wells and this number is growing with wells being completed in water depths down to 3000 m. The age of the subsea wells is also growing resulting in the need for riser less light well interventions to maintain the wells and increase oil recovery. Cost saving is the main driver for performing LWI operations from a monohull vessel, when compared to the same operations being performed from a drilling rig. These operations can be performed from a monohull DP-3 vessel whilst maintaining well control and access to the well bore via a subsea lubricator system, resulting in a lower cost for intervention operations. During the life of a well a number of planned or unplanned well interventions may be required. Activities may include; diagnostics, stimulation, surveillance, manipulation of equipment and repair of mechanical failure. Experience with various operators design of successive vessels and the incorporation of lessons learned has the vessels and crews.
Light Well Intervention Vessels Island Offshore operate 4 vessels designed and built as dedicated Light Well Intervention vessels. Three of the vessels have a fully integrated subsea lubricator system, associated controls and communication systems. The fourth vessel, Island Intervention, is utilized as a subsea construction unit suitable for Xmas tree installations, top hole drilling and P&A operations. 5 Engineering Services IOSS provide engineering and support services to achieve innovative solutions that allow Increased Oil Recovery. These operations are done with minimum environmental impact, by implementing new methods and improving existing services. IOSS provide integrated engineering services to plan, design and manage the delivery of solutions for complex projects in harsh and challenging environments such as the North Sea and West of Shetland. Employees have many years of experience from drilling operation, coil tubing operation, subsea installation and downhole tool design. Dedicated, experienced project management, together with years of light well intervention operation and marine operations experience, enables IOSS to take on demanding projects for our clients. IOSS are actively engaged in a number of R&D projects, which are by increasing the recovery rate and adding value for our clients. The engineering department of IOSS offers a wide range of engineering services to support on-going projects: Project management pool Design 3D modeling and animation Subsea competence group Downhole tool design System integration Topside design Operational engineering support can be provided on a day to day basis in support of various projects including: well activities. Support on-going operations with relevant engineering capabilities. This would also include external resources as required. Engineering activities related to on-going improvement activities and future service developments.
Engineering Services Research & Development IOSS are actively involved in the development of new technologies for the enhancement of Increased Oil cost in other subsea operations. The following describes some of the technologies being studied and developed. Open Water Completion Feasibility Study Completion of subsea wells and installation of the Xmas trees are traditionally performed by a drilling rig. As part of a client driven global strategy to evaluate alternative lower cost solutions, a study to run the upper completion from a DP monohull vessel has been carried out. The study involved vessel capabilities for handling, running of the upper completion string, barrier philosophy and installation of the Xmas tree. The study has involved client personnel, casing/tubing supplier, handling equipment suppliers, DNV and IOSS personnel both in Norway and in the UK. Completion from a monohull vessel is feasible. Open Water Riser Less Coil Tubing Feasibility Study IOSS are conducting a feasibility study for the use of riser less coil tubing from a DP monohull vessel such as the Island Constructor. The study includes the review of the vessel top side equipment and subsea well control equipment to accommodate the coil tubing operations. Increased service scope = Increased cost! tubing operations can be performed from a vessel and IOSS are now looking for partners who would be willing to progress the development of the equipment and processes required. The additional equipment required would have an impact on the vessel service rates but would be a more cost effective solution than the use of specialized vessels or drilling rigs.
Xmas Tree Installation (XMT) from a Monohull Vessel Offshore (IO), batch setting and installation of multiple subsea XMTs (both horizontal and vertical) have been performed in central and northern part of the North Sea. All the IO intervention vessels have been involved in these operations. We have been responsible for the engineering and management of the installation phase of several subsea XMTs in the northern part of the North Sea. The onshore engineering and planning activities performed by IOSS play a operations.
Plug and Abandonment Services Traditionally plugging and abandoning (P&A) of suspended subsea wells have been done by drilling rigs. Over the last few years subsea wells have been successfully plugged and abandoned and wellheads recovered using monohull DP vessels. P&A is currently governed by NORSOK D-010 on Norwegian sector and Guidelines for the Suspension and Abandonment of Wells on UK sector. These documents specify categories of plug and abandonment, number of barriers and type of barriers which is necessary. Advantages: DP-3 vessels provides a lower cost solution than the use of a drilling rig Fast on/off locations, no anchor handling No need for supply vessels, due to relative short travel time to and from port IOSS are in compliance with these demands and can supply: Full P&A project responsibility Engineering Government contact Planning of single or batch P&A, with LWI vessels or a vessel of opportunity. Planning for old and new wells, with and without Xmas trees Recovered Wellhead, Conductor and Guide Base
Vessel Deck Pipe Handling System Hydraulic Pipe Make Up System (Iron Roughneck) Vessel Deck Arrangement for Pipe Handling System Top Hole Drilling Services Based on experience gained from the handling, running and retrieving of drill pipe for trenching operations Island Offshore s vessels now provide the capability to drill surface hole for conductor pipe, install the subsea wellhead and cement the casing in place. Using the monohull DP -3 vessels provides a lower cost solution than the use of a drilling rig. Following rig arrival on location and positioned above the well, the rig can immediately run the subsea BOP stack and riser system and start drilling operations thus providing lower per well drilling costs. FEED studies have operations from a monohull vessel The vessel provides services for surface hole drilling including: Pipe racks located on the main deck Pipe lifting and handling Pipe skidding and pick up system False rotary table above the moon pool Top drive system can be implemented Hydraulic pipe make and break system (iron roughneck) Cement mixing and pumping The top hole drilling system drills surface hole in open water to allow the installation and cementing of 30 /36 conductor pipe and wellhead. Hole for 20 /26 casing can then be drilled and casing and high pressure wellhead landed and cemented. With the wellhead system in place the rig can proceed to run the subsea BOP system after it is positioned on location and commence drilling operations. This reduces rig time associated with establishing the well and results in lower per well rig costs. There are certain limitations associated with drilling from a monohull vessel, issues including drilling depths and casing weights. To complement the top hole drilling capabilities, IOSS is working in co-operation with Norwegian company NeoDrill to provide vessels and support for the installation of the Conductor Anode Node (CAN ) system.
Downhole Tooling Services for IOR In co-operation with a Canadian company, Penetrators Canada Inc., IOSS is marketing completion and stimulation systems that provide a more effective method of establishing communications between the well bore and the target zone in both production and injection wells. To provide increased oil recovery, well bore drilling tools (MaxPERF) have been developed that drilled (1.8m) in length. The tool drills a 1 (26mm) hole in the casing and 0.70 (17mm) diameter hole (tunnel) laterally from the well bore. The system does not damage the casing or cement sheath and can be used in open hole, cased hole either in vertical, directional or horizontal. The tool drills one radial tunnel (hole) at a time each requiring 10 to 20 minutes average time to complete and is capable of making multiple tunnels in a single run. Factors including well that can be completed in a single run. Typically 4 to 8 tunnels have been completed per run but more have been factors mentioned above. The system provides a unique opportunity to expose new pay zones in a clean and non-damaging manner. Advantages of MaxPERF penetrations: Opportunity to reach beyond any damaged near well bore area No damage to casing, cement or formation No debris or compaction No impact or explosives Longer life and less likely to plug off Lower draw down to reduce potential coning problems Opportunity to intersect natural fractures near the well bore to drill into the formation 72 Read more:
How to Increase Oil Recovery In 2011 IOSS established a downhole technology company; Agat Technology. The aim of Agat Technology is to make it possible to expand the services provided on the LWI vessels today. Agat Technology is set up to do mechanical, electrical and systems design. They will do both new technology development and make improvements on existing tools and systems. The company consists of experts with long and broad experience from tool-design and fabrication.
