1 Cultural Difference and Social Solidarity Dividing and Uniting Communities Beyond Multiculturalism Middle East Technical University Northern Cyprus Campus July 5 through July 8, Location: The university campus is located next to the village of Kalkanlı, about 6km from Güzelyurt/Morphu in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Northern Cyprus is rural, and the campus sits on the top of a bluff overlooking an ancient olive grove. Some of the trees in the grove are estimated to be over 800 years old. Our campus is in a beautiful location, but it is not located near the tourist sections of the island. While we have spectacular sunsets over the sea and mountains from our campus, we are 6 kilometers from the sea side and there is no direct sea side access. Weather: It will be warm and sunny. Daytime temperatures will be in the 30s, nighttime temperatures in the 20s. Humidity will be between 40-50%. Rain is very rare in July. What to Wear: Outside it may be very warm and we want everyone to be comfortable and relaxed for the conference. In most cases business casual dress is appropriate. Neat and comfortable should be the guidelines for clothing choices. The conference venue is air conditioned, but our dinners will be held outside in the evenings where the late setting sun may be warm. During our guided cultural tour, we will be out in the heat and sun, so protective clothing, sunscreen, etc. may be necessary. All participants will have access to the sports facilities on campus including the outdoor swimming pool, so swimming attire might be good to bring along. Food: Breakfast will be simple Turkish breakfast with breads, cheeses, olives, honey, and jams. Coffee and tea will be available. Lunches will be provided by the campus caterer and will be based on the Turkish kitchen. A vegetarian option will be available. Our two campus dinners will have a variety of hors d oeuvres and Turkish food choices. The dinner we have after our cultural tour/excursion will give all participants a taste of the expanse of the Turkish Cypriot Kitchen at a local restaurant in Kyrenia. 1

2 Internet and Wireless communications: All participants will have access to free wireless internet from the conference center only. Internet is not available in the Guest House. There are two wireless phone providers in North Cyprus that offer 3G service and coverage on North Cyprus. They are Telsim ( and Kuzey Kibris Turkcell ( Roaming charges are usually similar to, but more expensive than, those charged by Vodafone and Turkcell in Turkey. Pay as you go SIM cards are available from the phone store on campus. Money: The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus uses the Turkish Lira as its dominant currency. In many places, EURO and GBP are also accepted. The conference fee covers most of the costs of the conference including most meals and the hotel. Only one dinner is not covered and it will cost approximately 45TL (20Euro) per person. However, participants may want to purchase extra water, snacks, or drinks during the 4 days of the conference so having some Turkish Lira may be helpful. For those participants flying through Turkey, it is easiest to change money at the airport in Istanbul. We have a bank on campus that will change Euro/USD/GBP to Turkish Lira. Credit cards are accepted almost everywhere in North Cyprus. There are ATMs on campus, at the airport, and throughout North Cyprus. All ATMs dispense Turkish Lira and some dispense Euro and GBP. Airport Pickup: We will be using specially chartered vans and university vehicles to pick up participants and return them to Ercan Airport. Participants flying into Larnaca Airport will be met with a private taxi and transported to the university guest house. Check-in: The airport transfer service will drop participants at the campus Guest House. Depending on your arrival time, most of you will be welcomed by a representative of the conference organization who will give you your conference packets and credentials and answer any questions you might have. Though participants will eat breakfast at the Guest House, it does not have a bar or restaurant. The nearest restaurants and stores are 500m east (to the left when you exit the Guest House). Keep in mind, most services cater to students. o 4 local restaurants/bars o 1 pizza place o 1 sandwich shop o 3 grocery stores (beer/wine/liquor is available) o *Note: there is no pharmacy on campus or in Kalkanli village. Transportation (short version): Public transportation is not very advanced on the island. Because of its rural nature, people rely on cars to get around. Tourists generally rent cars or travel with organized tours to see the historical and cultural sites on the island. If you are coming for just for the conference, then you will not need a rental car. However, if you are planning on arriving early or staying late, you might need a rental car. There are daily direct flights from Ankara and Istanbul and scheduled direct flights from Izmir, Antalya, Adana, Hatay, Gaziantep, Trabzon and Kayseri. Indirect flights are available from the major cities all around the world via Ankara, Istanbul, Izmir, Adana and Antalya. Taxi services are available for local and inter-city transportation. Municipalities also offer local bus services. Visitors must drive on the left with a local or international driving license in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, where international traffic signs are used. The domestic roads are safe and in good condition. The vehicles brought into TRNC must have valid insurance.
