3 Introduction This procedure has been produced to set out ELCMHT s backup and data storage procedures and to provide clear responsibilities for the backup and recovery of servers and systems. It attempts to describe the current backup regimes in detail and simplify the process so that anyone can either run a backup or restore data from a previous backup, although some knowledge of Windows Servers and Symantec Backup Software is assumed. Backups ELCMHT s backup strategy can be divided into five sections: 1. Data backup onto disk and tape at Trust HQ (East One). 2. Weekly backup duplication for off-site storage. 3. Exchange backup onto tape at Trust HQ (East One). 4. Weekly Exchange backup for off-site storage. 5. Backup onto tape at non-trust HQ sites. Data backup onto tape at Trust HQ Backup at Trust HQ is performed on MH72-HQ-BACKUP using Symantec Backup Exec to a two drive LTO4 tape library which resides in the Server room on the 3 rd floor of East One. The backup uses the Data Backup selection list. Daily Incremental backups are to SAN disk. Daily Incremental media is protected for 5 days. Weekly full backups are to tape. Weekly backups are duplicated to a second set of tapes to be sent off-site. Weekly media, Full Weekly Data Backup, is retained indefinitely retention period, but the tapes are recalled after about 6 months as tape number run low. Weekly tapes used at the end of the month are not recalled. See the backup management documentation in this folder for details. See appendix 2, sheet 1 Exchange backup onto tape at Trust HQ The Trusts Exchange Server is backed up onto MH128-HQ-BACKUP using Symantec Backup Exec to a two drive LTO3 tape library which resides in the Server room on the 3 rd floor of East One. Exchange Daily and Exchange Monthly Media sets the Daily tapes are protected from overwriting for 4 weeks and the Monthly ones indefinitely. Daily Exchange Backups are run every day Monday to Friday at 21:00. Monthly Exchange Backups are run on the 4 th Sunday of every month at 21:00 after which the tape is automatically ejected from the drive. On the Monday after the 4 th Sunday of every month this tape should be removed from the tape unit, by the Senior IT Officer responsible for monitoring BLT calls, and put in the safe in readiness for collection by offsite Storage Company. 4 then be labelled and put into the tape unit and assigned to the Exchange Monthly media set for use with the next month s backup. See appendix 2, sheet 2 Data backup at non-trust HQ sites BLT has been commissioned to manage backups at CDR, JHC and Mile End. Each site has a tape library. 5 Checking of Backups Backups on the servers at East One and JHC are checked on a daily basis by the Senior IT Officer who is responsible for monitoring the BLT calls. Data Recovery Data recovery is done on an ad hoc basis using Symantec Backup Software. Test restores of data are performed on a monthly basis.
