This lesson utilizes the cuent issue of Fam Facts, poduced by the Ameican Fam Bueau Fedeation. This publication is updated evey two yeas (next evision, 2009, 2011, etc.). It is suggested that you puchase a classoom set of Fam Facts fom Utah AITC website. Ameican agicultue is the stoy of Ameican business. Agicultue has been aound fo ove 10,000 yeas. Seveal agicultual evolutions have occued that today enable each U.S. fame to feed themselves and 144 othe people hee o aound the wold. Two hunded yeas ago 98 pecent of the population woked on fams. Today in the United States technology and othe scientific discoveies have left less than 2 pecent of ou population woking on the fam to poduce the aw food and fibes that we use evey day. Advancements in plant and animal science, food stoage techniques and machines, fetilizes and cop potection chemicals, numeous compute applications and moden machines have tansfomed Ameican agicultue into the most poductive food and fibe poducing system in the wold, and kept the pice of food the lowest of any nation. The following activities ae designed to give you students an intoduction to the scope and impotance of agicultue and some of the skills that ae necessay fo caees in agicultual business. Students will need to be somewhat familia with MS Office pogams such as PowePoint and Excel. Time: Two to thee 45-minute sessions Gade Level: 7-9 : Standad 3 Students will examine wokplace tasks and concepts in agicultue. Objectives: 1. Exploe the elationship and impact of agicultue and natual esouces on the economy. 2. Identify the elationship and impact of agicultue on the family and consume. 3. Undestand the elationship and impact of agicultue and natual esouces on technology and engineeing. 41
2 Activity Pocedues Activity 1: Fam Facts o Opinion 1. Peview the Fam Facts booklet identifying with the students the diffeent types of gaphs used in the publication (ba gaphs, pie chats, line gaphs, etc.). 2. Pick a couple of pages in the Fam Facts booklet and ask students if the data on the pages could be displayed utilizing a diffeent type of gaph. Ask What is the gaph saying? What is it not saying? 3. Ask students to complete the Faming: It s a Fact woksheet using the Fam Facts booklet. You may want to tell students the page numbes whee they will find the equested infomation. Fam Facts is updated evey two yeas (2009, 2011). Be sue you ae using the most cuent booklet to have the most accuate data; this also means the page numbes may change in new booklets. This activity is geat pepaation fo the Ag Oveload game. Activity 2: Who Gets You Food Dolla? 1. Bing a bag of ten gocey items and a eceipt that itemizes the cost of each item. 2. Using the eceipt and a tanspaency pen, fill out the Itemized Gocey List tanspaency maste, and shae it with the students. 3. Review with the students the Whee You Food Dolla Goes gaph in the Fam Facts booklet (page 14). 4. Fo each of the ten gocey items, ask students to compute how much each off-fam item (agibusiness) costs and how much was etuned to the fame o anche fo each item (Whee Does You Food Dolla Go woksheet). You may want to demonstate how to make the calculations fo the fist item. Activity 3: Ag Oveload Access the Ag Oveload compute pogam eithe online (steaming fom the web) at teaches/seconday/ente_games.cfm o by puchasing the media fom the same site and installing the pogam on you lab computes. Utah teaches will eceive a passwod fo fee access. Request this passwod 24 hous pio to accessing the site. The game is easy to play but you may want to demonstate how to use the Ag Oveload pogam in font of the entie class using an LCD pojecto. Speakes ae also equied. If only one compute is available fo the activity, divide the class into teams and play the game as an entie class. If you have a compute lab poceed with the following activity. The Fam Facts booklet should be used as the esouce fo this game. Students may play the game individually, in pais o as two teams. Povide each student, pai, o team of students with a compute that allows access to the Ag Oveload pogam (web o CD). Thee ae two pats to the game quiz questions and two bonus ound questions. Five questions ae asked and then a bonus question, five moe questions ae asked and then a final bonus question. (All the ques- 42
3 tions ae andom fom a database of 150 questions. If you ae playing this game fom the web, questions will be peiodically updated.) Points ae totaled fom the quiz and bonus ounds. The following instuctions ae ead aloud to students when they launch the pogam: Welcome to Ag Oveload! Agicultue is pat of each of ou lives, fom the food we eat, to the clothes we wea. Check out some ae and fun facts about this amazing topic as you pogess though this activity. In this activity, you ae to choose the coect answe to each question o fact that appeas. You can get help fom the HINT BUTTON, but bewae, you lose points by using it. Afte evey 5 questions you will have a chance to play a BONUS ROUND. In the Bonus Round it is you job to contol a noxious weed that is theatening to choke out a new cop. To do this, you have to choose the coect answe to a challenging question. Be pepaed to save this cop with knowledge! Ask each team to play thee games and complete the Ag Oveload Scoe Cad fo each ound. Did thei scoe impove each game? What is at least one new fact they leaned? Ask each individual o team to total all thee ounds fo a final scoe. Which team in the class did the best? 43
