Laudon, New York University and Jane Laudon, ISBN-13: NOTE: THE TEXTBOOK IS PROVIDED ELECTRONICALLY VIA THE MYMISLABS COURSE WEBSITE. YOU DO NOT NEED TO PURCHASE A SEPARATE TEXTBOOK. However, you do need to register and pay for the MyMISLab course site access. You will be guided through the payment process the first time you click on the MyMISLabs tab on the Blackboard course site. You have essentially four options: 1. Purchase your course access through the NAU bookstore. You will pay to receive a code for MyMISLabs access when you first log onto the site, access to a digital version of the text, and (I believe but am not sure) a paper copy of the text. Cost - $ Log directly onto MyMISLabs via the Blackboard course site and purchase course access without a textbook. This option is intended for student who may already have a textbook.

2 YOU WILL NEED TO HAVE ACCESS TO A TEXTBOOK IN ORDER TO DO WELL IN THIS COURSE. Cost - $ Log directly onto MyMISLabs via the Blackboard course site and purchase MyMISLabs access and access to a digital copy of the textbook. THIS IS THE OPTION PREFERRED BY MOST STUDENTS. This option is for students who prefer to be able to take notes in their textbooks. Cost $135. The costs shown above are estimates that may vary from time to time. Supplemental readings and videos may be assigned and available through BlackboardLearn or through the MyMISLabs web site. Catalog Description: This course presents information systems used by organizations and work groups with an emphasis on system development, management and effective use. Prerequisites: BBA 293 or CIS 120 or Admission to Tech Management program. Learning Outcomes: After completing this course students should be able to: 1. Understand System Thinking and the systemic characteristics of Information Systems. 2. Recognize the competitive and strategic significance of an information system to a work group and an organization for a given case or actual business situation. 3. Describe the procedures for developing and managing an information system, so the system furthers the strategic, marketing, financial or operational plans of a work group or an organization 4. Appraise the need for collecting reliable data and using it to support their work group. 5. Analyze a business situation to determine the information system needs and apply systems development steps required to construct the work group's solution. 6. Judge the appropriateness of an information system in a given business situation. Course Organization: The course is seven weeks long. The course is accessed through Blackboard Learn. However, students will link from the BBL site to the MyMISLLabs site where most of the course material is housed and where most of your work will be done. Most weeks you will be expected to read one or two textbook chapters, complete a quiz (typically 25 questions), view one or two video clips and answer a few questions about them, then complete a writing assignment related to one of the week s topics. This essay submission will typically be 200 to 500 words in length. During week one you will have textbook reading but you will also be expected to review the course introduction, the syllabus (this document), sign into the MyMISLabs site, etc. During week seven you will complete the final exam (case study), described further below. The exam (case study) is located in BlackBoard, not the MyMISLabs site.

3 Student Learning Assessments: Text Chapter Quizzes (25% of course grade) The brief online quizzes (true/false, multiple choice) reinforce learning and test understanding of the course concepts. Video Clip Quizzes and Simulations (25% of course grade) Each week students will view one or more brief video clips then complete an online quiz (true/false, multiple choice) to reinforce learning and test understanding of the concepts addressed. Some weeks students will conduct a simulation exercise to reinforce application of the concepts addressed. Writing Assignments (25% of course grade) During weeks one through six students will complete a written essay assignment about one or more of the topics covered in the text and/or the videos for that week. The intent is for the student to demonstrate that they understand the material and can apply it effectively. These cases will typically be 200 to 500 words in length but there is NO mandatory word count requirement. The point is for you to demonstrate that you have learned the course material and can apply it effectively. Final case (25% of course grade): There will be a final exam consisting of a case and several related essay questions. You will have access to a copy of the case and questions on the first day of the course. Each week you will be able to consider how the course material relates to the case and the questions. You will also have ample opportunity to do outside research on topics that you think deserve special attention. Students should plan to spend several hours thinking about and preparing their answers to the final essay questions. You will have a great deal of work to do in a very brief time if you wait until week 7 to begin looking at the final case. Letter grades will be assigned as follows: 90%+ A 80 89% B 70 79% C 60 69% D 59% or less F Students should check their specific assignment grade and instructor feedback while in the MyMISLabs site. The final exam and final course grade will be posted in the Blackboard site. 5 Course Policies: Retests- There will be no retests for quizzes or case analyses. Students who perform poorly are encouraged to contact the instructor directly by or phone to discuss possible ways to improve performance. Makeup cases and quizzes Students are expected to take the quizzes as scheduled. Quizzes may be accessed by Internet from any place in the world. If you are traveling during and exam week, you are responsible for access to complete the material. Plagiarism and cheating Don t! It violates NAU policy as well as moral and ethical standards. (See NAU policies on "academic integrity" below.) Students will receive zero points on any specific assignment or exam or an F in the Syllabus change - The instructor reserves the right to make changes in this syllabus as deemed necessary and appropriate to serve the best interests of the class and the learning experience.
