It will provide students with the vision and understanding of how to leverage technology to create efficiencies and to support business processes. The course will introduce key technical components of information systems including telecommunications, software applications and information security. Using this general knowledge, students will analyze how existing organizations leverage their IT investments to maximize business value and gain a competitive advantage. Case studies will show how leading firms use strategic information systems that combine E-Business, Customer Relationship Management, Business Intelligence, and Enterprise Systems to improve profits and customer satisfaction. Instructional Methods Course Goals The format combines class discussions with lecture and extensive student participation. The goal of this course is to provide a managerial perspective of the infrastructure of modern business information systems and how these systems are used to create efficiencies and business value. 2 Learning Objectives Upon completing this course, students should be able to: Identify how technology can be used to create efficiencies in organizations Analyze how information is captured, stored and retrieved Demonstrate how the Internet is being used to support business objectives Determine how data can be aggregated and analyzed in order to identify key trends and model behaviors Evaluate how information is used to enhance business decision making Examine the design and implement technical solutions in order to solve business problems or create business opportunities Explain the current and future trends in business technology Stud Required Text Course Requirements Management Information Systems & Multimedia Student CD Package, 10/E Jane P. Laudon Publisher: Prentice Hall Copyright: 2007 ISBN: pp Class Participation: Students are expected to come to class prepared, having read the assigned reading, completed the homework exercises and ready to engage in classroom discussions. Class participation will represent 20% of the final grade. Homework Assignments: Homework will be assigned at the end of each class. Completing assigned homework on time will represent 20% of the final grade. Late homework assignments will not be accepted. It is the student s responsibility to stay current on all materials and assignments even in the event that they are absent from class. All homework assignments will be posted on Blackboard after each class. Article Reviews: Students will be asked to read one article that relates to topics discussed in class. These articles will be used for discussions related to current trends in technology. Students will prepare a brief summary of the article (less than two pages) and print a copy of the article. One article review must be submitted each week. Article reviews will be 5% of the final grade. Group Assignment: Page 2 of 8
3 Students will be assigned into groups and asked to work with a local business to investigate their Information Systems Department. Students will be required to do research on the chosen organization and will prepare a list of questions based on the readings in the text. Students will arrange to speak with the Manager of Information Systems who will provide them with an overview of the IT function and answer any questions. At the end of the semester, students will prepare and present a power point presentation to the class. The presentation should minimally include the following: Description of the business model Current state of the technology Description of the Staff Future plans and strategy for the IS group Challenges facing the IS department Enhancements and Recommendations All members of the group will receive the same grade, so it is important that each member contributes to this project. Group presentations should be a minimum of ten minutes in length and will represent 5% of the final grade. Exams: There will be two exams given. The format of these exams will be a combination of True/False, Multiple Choice and Essay question. The midterm and final exam will each represent 25% of the final grade. Course Policies Attendance Policy: Attendance will be taken at the start of each class. If students miss more than 2 classes, they will receive a failing grade in the course. Since tardiness is a disruption to the entire class, students who arrive after the start of the class will be considered absent for the day. No exceptions. If a student must miss a scheduled class, it is their responsibility to notify the instructor and make up the materials missed. Academic Honesty: Students are expected to follow the Code of Academic Honesty as described in the college catalog. In particular, plagiarism is a serious offense. Students are expected to properly source all ideas that are not their own. Cell Phones: For the sake of fellow students and the learning atmosphere of the class, cell phones must be turned off prior to entering the classroom. Page 3 of 8

Academic Computing The College has two open access computer lab areas: Shaw and the Wadsworth Library. Instructional computer classrooms are available for student use when classes are not in session. Schedules are posted on the doors of the computer labs and on the College website select Resources and Services and then select Computer Labs.
