3 With 15 years of experience and as a provider of a lumbar artificial disc we have a special responsibility for ensuring an excellent education of the surgeon resulting in a superior clinical outcome. To impart a thorough knowledge of the product and technique is a prerequisite to this goal. Therefore, we offer a number of courses for the lumbar artificial disc activ L. Following our philosophy, we have clear guidelines relating to the use of the activ L product. 3

5 Course Overview activ L Courses: Sawbone Workshop Clinical Instructional Course Clinical Visits endorsed by Basic Spine Courses: Surgical Access Management in Spine Surgery Management of Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD) using fusion and non-fusion techniques 5

6 activ L Courses Sawbone Workshop Participants: Surgical team: Surgeon, assistant surgeon, OR personnel 1 day before first surgery Target Group: For surgeons who already have experience with spine arthroplasty and want to learn the surgical technique of activ L. A certified sawbone workshop is offered before the first activ L surgery. The workshop should train the OR team for instrument handling and the surgical technique. The certificate qualifies the surgeon to perform an activ L surgery. endorsed by 6

7 Clinical Instructional Course max. 4 participants Chairman: Dr. Sola every month from May on, dates are available on request Target Group: For surgeons who already have experience with spine arthroplasty and want to learn the surgical technique of activ L. Place: Rostock, Germany first day starting at 2pm: access, indications, surgical technique Workshop: Dummy workshop second day ending at lunch time: live surgery This course is an intensive training on the lumbar artificial disc and focuses on the new Aesculap activ L disc. In a Hands-on-Workshop the instrument handling and surgical technique is trained. One surgery will be performed during the course and the participants are invited to assist the case. 7

10 Basic Courses Surgical Access Management Spine max. 12 participants May 2006 Chairman: Prof. Beisse, Dr. Vieweg, Dr. Weißkopf, Dr. Sola, Dr. Kilian Target Group: Surgeons who are beginners for lumbar artificial disc surgeries. 3 days 3 approach techniques on the spine: anterior lumbar (midline and anterior-lateral), minimally invasive posterior lumbar, thoracoscopic Theory: Access, anatomy, complication management Workshop: Access training in sawbone and porcine workshops 10

11 This course is an intensive access management training for different approaches. Beside the minimally invasive posterior lumbar approach technique, a thoracoscopic approach to the anterior spine and the anterior lumbar approach are trained intensively. For the anterior lumbar approach, the midline approach as well as the anterior-lateral approach will be a topic. All techniques are trained in form of porcine workshops in the professionally equipped training center of the IRCAD institute in Strasbourg, France. 11

13 This course summarizes different treatment options for degenerative disc disease. What is the indication for spinal fusion and non-fusion techniques? Anatomical and biomechanical aspects are discussed. Beside being taught the approach techniques and surgical techniques of the posterior and anterior lumbar spine, the participants will have the opportunity to train the techniques in cadaver workshops. 13
