8 History OLD WORLD TRADITION The name Aesculap comes from Asclepius, the Greek God of medicine, who is often depicted with his serpent entwined staff. Aesculap began as a manufacturer of classical surgical instruments in Tuttlingen, Germany in Founded by Gottfried Jetter, the Aesculap manufacturing plant quickly grew, and by 1900, a new factory was built to hold 600 employees. The city of Tuttlingen is now the cradle of surgical instrument manufacturing for the world. 8
9 NOTABLE Today Aesculap employs more than 580 people in the U.S. Annual sales of the Aesculap U.S. division exceed 210 million dollars. With a sales force of 250 and a distribution center centrally located in Missouri, Aesculap can easily service all of its U.S. and Canadian customers. THE TRADITION CONTINUES Aesculap continues to grow and expand its production capabilities. In 2001, the Benchmark Factory, one of the most modern implant factories in Europe, opened and houses 200 production machines covering over 120,000 square feet of space. B. Braun/Aesculap operates in 50 countries around the world. Today, Aesculap s U.S. headquarters is located in Center Valley, PA with a distribution center located in Hazelwood, MO and R&D facilities in Breinigsville, PA. 9
