1 Sight Word Superstars Building Fry List Fluency By Jennifer Bates
2 How I use this program I developed this program because I noticed many of my students were still trying to sound out their sight words. I wanted a systematic way to make sure my students were able to read their sight words fluently. During guided reading, students practice reading their list with their whisper phone while they are waiting for their turn with me. I broke each Fry 100 into 5 lists of 20 words. I copy each level of Fry words on a different color of paper to make it easier on myself and the kids can easily see their progress. I consider my 1st graders fluent if they can read a list in under 20 seconds. You may want to adjust your time goal based on the age or ability of your students. When a student meets their fluency goal on a list, I award them a sticker for their star. Once their star has all five stickers, the class applauds them and the star is sent home with the included certificate. I color code the certificates as well. They then graduate to a new star in the next color and start working on the next Fry 100.

13 A note about the following cards I made the following cards to be used with Read for Speed but they also could be used as flashcards. Again, I color code mine when copying. That way I can easily differentiate, making sure the cards I put out for a group fit their ability level. I further indicated where you could break them by list within each 100. To help students struggling to pass a list, I only give them the cards from that list and tell them to return the cards to the bottom of the deck. That way they are reading the same 20 over and over again. Alternate idea: Player 2 could read the word to player 1 who would have to spell it correctly. Good practice for both players.
