March 2013 A Look into Our Backyard: Canadian Landforms Shirley Cheung (Shirley_Cheung724@gmail.com) Grade 2/3 Steve Collins EDCP 331 University of British Columbia
Our Classroom: Shirley s Classroom My classroom consists of 21 students. There are 8 grade 3 students and 13 grade 2 students. There are 11 boys and 10 girls. Currently, there are 3 students in my classroom with designations (ADHD, Autism, and Global Physical delays), and two full-time special education assistants. Overall, students from both grades participate in an integrated curriculum in the classroom in which majority of the subjects are taught to both grades simultaneously. The students in my classroom are very inquisitive and enjoy a lot of interactive and engaging activities. For example, the classroom teacher incorporates monthly baking lessons to engage students in cooperative skills, listening skills, observation skills, and participatory skills. There is a wide of range of skills in my classroom, ranging from level 1 ELL students to a student who is gifted. One of my goals during my practicum is to focus on classroom climate because I ve found there are students who are more quiet and reserved during classroom discussions, whereas some students have a high tendency of calling out in class. I hope to create activities that are interactive, engaging, and promote self-confidence in my students.
Social Studies Unit Plan: Canadian Landforms Prescribed Learning Outcomes (IRP)*: Grade 2 E1 locate on a map landforms and bodies of water of local and national significance, including E3 describe how the physical environment influences human activities Grade 3 E1 locate major landforms and bodies of water in BC and Canada Guiding Goals: Our goal is to provide students an opportunity to learn about different landforms that are easily observable and accessible in a daily context. We would like to provide specific examples of Canadian geography, and enable our students to appreciate and value landforms that are distinct within Canada when compared to other countries around the world. Also, we intend to encourage our students to understand how humans affect and influence landforms and their physical environment. In addition, we will bring our students to a local landform to connect their classroom knowledge about Canadian landforms and extend their thinking to apply their education to real-life enactment. *These are just the core PLOs for the SS units. PLO from visual arts, language arts and music are interconnected to the social studies unit as well.
Integration into Other Subject Areas Language Arts Art Music PLOs A7 demonstrate enhanced vocabulary knowledge and usage B1 read fluently and demonstrate comprehension of a range of grade-appropriate literary texts (story books, travel brochures, maps) A1 use a variety of image sources to create images A3 create images that show the use of following visual elements and principles of design: colour, shape, line A1 sing and play classroom repertoire A2 represent personal thoughts images and feeling experiences in classroom repertoire B2 sing simple melodies Integration Students will be exposed to a variety of fiction and non-fiction literature during the course of this unit. Travel Brochure: Students will be shown a variety of brochure and apply knowledge they learned during the lessons and create their own travel brochure based on nonfictional information about BC. Books: Both non-fiction and fiction books will be used to show different perspectives of informative writing. Vocabulary: Through the use of a variety of literary texts, the students will be exposed to new vocabulary and students will demonstrate knowledge of their newfound knowledge through class projects. Travel Brochure: Students will be creating their own illustrations to demonstrate their knowledge about BC landforms, resources, and outdoor activities. Ocean Song: Students will learn worldly geographic water bodies through musical enactment and interaction
Resource List Sources Read: Fishing by Ann Love and Jane Drake Earth s Land and Water by Bonnie Beers Cautions It is a great tool to introduce the topic of resources in relations to landforms from the perspective of a narrative story. But it is not a representative of all the different resources available in Canada. It is a great starting point, but additional resources are required to encourage students to explore additional information. The internet is a great tool to gather a variety of resources in a short amount of time, but it can also offer an overwhelming amount of information. It is wise to carefully select appropriate sites to show students in a classroom. Also, teachers should always have a back up plan in case technology fails on you during the lesson plan. Travel Brochures of BC Using real-life examples are a great way to show students different types of literature, but it is important for the students to have a set of criteria to follow to ensure unit objectives are met at the end of their project. Also, the teacher should use graphic organizers to help students organize their work. Book set: British Columbia by Carrie Gleason Alberta by Carrie Gleason Saskatchewan by Carrie Gleason Manitoba by Carrie Gleason Ontario by Carrie Gleason Quebec by Carrie Gleason New Brunswick by Carrie Gleason Nova Scotia by Carrie Gleason Prince Edward Island by Carrie Gleason Newfoundland by Carrie Gleason Yukon by Carrie Gleason Northwest Territories by Carrie Gleason Nunavut by Carrie Gleason These books are a great resource to gather information on specific qualities of different provinces and can be used to create summary sheets for some of the landforms. However, some of the text may be at a higher reading level than grade 2/3, therefore some modification to the vocabulary is required. This website guides you to making popsicle stick animals. You can choose to make it however you want.
