1 West Nile virus National Surveillance Report English Edition September to September, (Report Week ) Canada Humans: During surveillance week, the Public Health Agency of Canada (the Agency) was informed of nineteen human clinical cases of West Nile virus (WNv): eight () in Quebec; two () in Ontario; and nine (9) in Alberta. As of week, there have been a total of sixty-one clinical cases and two asymptomatic infections reported to the Agency: seventeen () in Quebec; twenty-four () in Ontario; two () in Manitoba; one () in Saskatchewan, and nineteen (9) in Alberta. Of the 6 clinical cases, sixteen (6%) were diagnosed as WNv neurological syndrome; thirty-five (5%) as WNv non-neurological syndrome; and ten (6%) as unclassified. Two fatal cases associated with West Nile virus have been reported. Mosquitoes: To date (Week ), a total of, mosquito pools have been tested for WNv [Quebec (,69); Ontario (,); Manitoba (9); Saskatchewan (6); and British Columbia (9)]. Of these, 9 (.%) mosquito pools tested positive for WNv [Quebec (); Ontario (9); Saskatchewan (); Manitoba (9); and British Columbia ()]. Dead Birds: A total of dead birds have been tested for WNv by the Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Centre. Of these, 5 positives were reported [Quebec (); Ontario (9); Manitoba (); Saskatchewan ()]. Domestic Animals: A total of thirty-six animals tested positive for WNv have been reported by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency: Quebec (two horses, one domestic bird); Ontario (two alpacas, seven horses, two birds); Manitoba (two horses); Saskatchewan (eleven horses); and Alberta (nine horses). National WNv surveillance data and maps can be found on the PHAC website at: United States As of week, 9 human cases of WNv have been reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the Unites States. Of these, (6%) were diagnosed as neuroinvasive disease, and (5%) non-neuroinvasive. Thirty-three fatal cases were reported. One hundred and ninety-two cases of presumptive viremic blood donors were reported. Europe and Neighbouring countries A total of 5 human cases of WNv have been reported by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. Of these, one hundred and thirty-nine human cases have been reported in the European Union and the European Economic Area: Croatia (); Greece (65), Hungary (), Italy (); and Romania (). Three-hundred and sixty-one human cases have been reported in neighbouring countries: Bosnia and Herzegovina (), the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia one (); Montenegro (); Serbia (); the Russian Federation (); Ukraine (); and Israel (56).

Likely related to travel outside the province/territory. These cases are included in either the total clinical cases or West Nile virus asymptomatic infections. Satisfies West Nile virus diagnostic test criteria in the absence of clinical criteria. This category could include asymptomatic blood donors whose blood is screened using a nucleic acid amplification test (NAT), by blood operators (i.e. Canadian Blood Services or Hema-Quebec) and is subsequently brought to the attention of public health officials. Blood operators in Canada perform a supplementary West Nile virus specific NAT following any positive donor screen test result.
