2 FINAL EXAM: WEDNESDAY, JUNE 8, 2016, 11:00AM-1:30PM TEXTBOOKS: Contacts (Ninth Edition)- by Valette and Valette Contacts Student Activities Manual (SAM) by Valette and Valette Contacts Printed Access Card (PAC) to Premium Website for all audio files to accompany SAM workbook Leçons 1-11 or audio CDs package (hard copies). Textbooks must be brought to class for each class day. *Notes: 1) STUDENT ACTIVITIES MANUAL (SAM): Workbook both ( Le français écrit ), and, with audio CDs ( Le français parlé ) assignment pages begin on page 1 and end on page 116 in Student Activities Manual. (Grades for late SAM assignments will be lowered by 10 points. Students must follow syllabus deadlines for SAM Workbook assignments). This work is graded for 25% of final grade. 2) Students are required to read through all of the pages in the textbook of each Leçon (Lesson) covered in French 101 as they would in any university class at CSUB to prepare for class. All students will be matched up with 1 in-class cooperative learning partner by Dr. Schmidt to complete the communicative activities throughout the textbook lessons during the entire quarter. During each class, Dr. Schmidt will specify the exact communicative exercises to be completed in each class in the textbook by writing their numbers and pages on the board. Students are expected to be cooperative with each other and to keep on task with their partners as they work through the communicative activities in oral French. Rude, disruptive or disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated in French 101. TEXTBOOKS MUST BE BROUGHT TO CLASS. Communicative activities create a workshop type environment during class time, which is good for students trying to become more conversational in beginning French (students learn by doing and being engaged in speaking the language they have chosen to learn, or gain more knowledge of); however, when Dr. Schmidt says, Un moment, s il vous plaît, she is asking for silence in the classroom. Merci beaucoup. 3) EXTRA CREDIT WORK in SAM (Student Activities Manual): Vie Pratique and Images du monde francophone pages 25-28, (includes Interlude Littéraire ), and 85-88, may be submitted by students who wish to complete extra credit work to earn 1 extra credit point per group of pages submitted. These extra credit points will be added to the student s final grade in the French 101 course; however, if these pages are partially completed, a student will earn.5 points instead of 1. Also, if a student exceeds the one class absence allowed, points earned will be deducted from the extra credit points earned per absence. For example, second absence equals -1 point from those earned, third absence equals -1 from those earned, etc. 4) Oral presentation 1: Une rencontre dans un club international -10 sentences in French A five-minute interview with Dr. Schmidt, IN FRENCH. Topic: Une rencontre dans un club international ( An encounter in an 2
3 international club ) A text of sentences must be prepared in advance to be read at the interview. Students must type and double space the text of their oral presentation in advance and hand it in to Dr. Schmidt after reading it. Please base what you write and say on the vocabulary and grammar in Leçons (Lessons) 1-5. Also, please write directly in French rather than translate from English into French. Dr. Schmidt will explain and clarify this writing strategy. (No Internet translator web use allowed on both oral presentation texts. That is considered cheating in French 101. All work must be the student s own.) Oral presentation 2: Ma nouvelle vie à Paris 10 sentences in French A five-minute interview with Dr. Schmidt, IN FRENCH. Topic: Ma nouvelle vie à Paris ( My new life in Paris ) A text of sentences must be prepared in advance to be read at the interview. Students must type and double space the text of their oral presentation in advance and hand it in to Dr. Schmidt after reading it. Please base what you write and say on the vocabulary and grammar in Leçons (Lessons) Also, please write directly in French rather than translate from English into French. Dr. Schmidt will explain and clarify this writing strategy. 4) No compositions are required in French 101, only oral presentations. **Notes: 1) Films: French in Action films will be shown and viewed by French 101 students after each quiz as part of the class immersion in French experience. Each film is in French only and is in a soap opera type format where many of the same characters appear from lesson to lesson. When words and grammatical structures appear in print on the screen, Dr. Schmidt will direct students to repeat them after her for pronunciation practice. No English is spoken during the viewing of the films. There are 2 types of exercises due for each of the 11 lessons in CONTACTS: written SAM workbook exercises (without using audio files in PAC or audio CDs) and SAM audio workbook exercises (using SAM audio files in PAC or audio CDs). Both of these types of exercises for Lessons 1-11 will be collected before or after each class according to the due dates on the syllabus. SAM are required each week. The equivalent of two to three hours of language lab is required each week. (This will vary from student to student.) You may complete your SAM labwork at home if you do not wish to work in the language lab on campus. PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT YOUR WORKBOOK WRITTEN EXERCISES AND WORKBOOK WRITTEN AUDIO-BASED EXERCISES WITH SOME BLANK ANSWER LINES OR BOXES, ETC. ON EXERCISES THAT YOU FAILED TO COMPLETE. POINTS WILL BE TAKEN OFF FOR ANY ANSWERS THAT ARE LEFT BLANK. 3
4 The Language Lab is located in DDH/E-102. Language Lab Hours for Spring 2016 will be posted on the Language Lab door. Class attendance is mandatory; however, if a student must miss one class only during the quarter, please inform Dr. Schmidt of that date, in advance, so that there will be no points taken off the student s participation grade. In the case of illness, students must provide a doctor s letter for an absence that is medical, or an employer s letter for an absence that is work-related. Also, if a student has a sick child at home and informs Dr. Schmidt of this, in advance via , that is also a valid medical excuse. Also, if a student must leave any class earlier than when it ends at 12:05PM, please inform Dr. Schmidt via or in person during office hours, in advance, of the day of the class meeting. A student's grade will depend on the following factors: Quizzes 25% Classroom participation (includes oral presentations) 25% SAM (written and audio) workbook exercises 25% Final exam 25% LEARNING OBJECTIVES FOR FRENCH 101: 1) Students will acquire fundamental components of basic French 101 grammar. 2) Students will acquire foundational French vocabulary and will engage in basic conversation in French. 3) Students will learn basic cultural information about France and all of the Frenchspeaking countries in the world. 5 THERE WILL BE NO MID-TERM EXAMINATION. A student's mid-term grade will be determined on the basis of quizzes, participation and the first oral presentation. NO STUDENT MAY CHANGE THE SCHEDULED DATE AND TIME OF HIS OR HER QUIZZES, ORAL PRESENTATIONS, OR FINAL EXAM WITHOUT AN URGENT EXCUSE (medical, etc.). NO MAKE-UP QUIZZES, ORAL PRESENTATIONS OR FINAL EXAMS ARE ALLOWED. ONE ABSENCE DURING THE 10-WEEK QUARTER IS ALLOWED WITH PRIOR NOTIFICATION. EACH ABSENCE EXCEEDING THE ONE ALLOWED WILL EQUAL -5 POINTS FROM A STUDENT'S FINAL GRADE FOR THE ENTIRE QUARTER PER ABSENCE. GRADING PROCEDURE: The grading system in all French courses is identical to the one described on page 70 of the CSUB General Catalog. Students will be given letter grades on all their tests - both written and oral; on their written assignments, such as oral presentations; written work, and on their final exam. The letter grades given will be as follows: A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, D-, F INTEGRITY OF SCHOLARSHIP AND GRADES/ACADEMIC DISHONESTY The CSUB rules regarding the integrity of scholarship will be strictly enforced. For your information, the rules, as they appear on page of the Catalog are as follows: The principles of truth and honesty are recognized as fundamental to a community of teachers and scholars. The University expects that both faculty and students will honor these principles and in so doing protect the validity of University grades. This means that all academic work will be done by the student to whom it is assigned, without unauthorized aid of any kind. Instructors, for their part, will exercise care in the planning and supervision of academic work so that honest effort will be positively encouraged. Plagiarism, the practice of taking ideas and writings from another and offering them as one's own, is a form of cheating and is unacceptable. It may consist of handing in someone else's work, copying a composition, using ideas, paragraphs, sentences, or phrases written by another or using ideas, data, and statistics compiled by another. This includes rearrangement of phrases from the original into a new pattern. When using ideas, interpretations, or material written or compiled by another, acknowledgement of indebtedness to the original author or source must be made by the use of quotation marks, footnotes or similar references. 5
6 A student may not submit a paper (or two papers which are substantially the same) for credit in two different courses unless a prior agreement to accept such work has been made between the instructors involved. If any instance of academic dishonesty is discovered by an instructor, it is the instructor's responsibility to give a failing grade to the student for the course. In every case, the instructor should notify in writing the Dean of Students and the dean of the school in which the student is enrolled of the circumstances of the case. In all cases of academic dishonesty, the first offense will result in the student's receiving an "F" in the course and the second offense will result in termination of the student's enrollment at the University. A student may appeal any sanction employed by the instructor and the University based upon an allegation of academic dishonesty by initiating grievance procedures within no more than fifteen (15) school days (academic year) after notification of the grade is mailed or personally given to the student. Procedures are available in the School deans' offices. 6
