About Parallels Desktop for Mac Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac enables you to create virtual machines on most Intel-based Macs. You can install a Windows, Linux, or other operating system in each of your virtual machines, and work with them and their applications side by side with your Mac OS X applications. Built on Parallels' award-winning hypervisor-based virtualization technology, Parallels Desktop enables you to: - create powerful and easy to use virtual machines - use 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems inside your virtual machines - use Windows and Linux applications side by side with your Mac OS X applications, without restarting your Mac - concurrently work with the files and applications from your Mac and your virtual machine - create Parallels virtual machines from physical computers and third-party virtual machines To enhance your experience of running more than one operating system on your Mac, Parallels Desktop includes several utilities: Parallels Tools for seamless integration between your Mac and the virtual machine, Parallels Transporter for moving from PC to Mac, and Parallels Mounter for accessing your virtual machine's files and folders without starting it.

Enhanced Logic - Boot Camp virtual machines can now be suspended and then resumed. - SmartGuard now has a backup mode that optimizes the virtual machine for Time Machine backups. - Import of third-party virtual machines has been integrated into the main application: now it s available through the File > Open menu. - Parallels Image Tool has been integrated into the main application: now all its functions are available in the Virtual Machine Configuration dialog. - Parallels Transporter is now accessible through the "Import Virtual Machines" option on the Welcome Screen or the File > Import menu. - Choose the level of integration between Windows and Mac by choosing the "Like a Mac" or "Like a PC" option when creating a new Windows virtual machine. - Open your Windows applications without seeing Parallels Desktop interface elements even when your virtual machine is powered off. - Shut down Windows and its applications in Coherence without seeing Parallels Desktop interface elements. - Automatic generation of support code for easier access to Parallels Support. - Keyboard shortcut (F6 or Fn + F6) for hiding/showing Parallels Desktop and all its windows. - Improved support for Boot Camp partitions using multiple disks. - Automatic SmartGuard snapshots taken after a timeout if the user does not respond to the prompts. - Improved active screen corners behavior in Full Screen mode. - Scaling of the virtual machine screen when its window is resized, if Parallels Tools are not installed or inactive. - Windows applications can be set as the default applications for handling CDs and DVDs inserted into the Mac. - The Num Lock key was added to the Send Keys menu. Enhanced Windows Applications Handling - Access to Windows applications from anywhere in the world with the help of Parallels Mobile for ipad, iphone, and ipod touch. - Windows Applications folders in the Dock now contain My computer, Control Panel and other useful shortcuts that are usually present in the Windows Start menu. - Applications icons in the Windows Applications folders are no longer marked with black

8 arrows. - Windows Applications folders don't reappear in the Dock after you remove them manually. - Spotlight search support for Windows applications. - Progress for downloads and other operations is now displayed on the Windows 7 applications icons in the Dock. - Windows 7 Jump Lists are supported for Windows applications in the Dock: view your recent documents by right-clicking the application icon in the Dock. - Grouping of all windows of a single Windows application under the same application icon in the Dock. - Windows applications icons can be configured not to appear in the Dock using the "Show icons in Dock" option in the virtual machine configuration. Enhanced Coherence - Improved graphics performance in Coherence and enhanced compatibility with 3D applications. - Improved logic of Crystal and Coherence view modes. Now Crystal mode is an extension for Coherence. - Arrow icon in the Mac menu bar for customizing Windows tray icons in Coherence. - Mac OS shortcuts (Cmd+W, Cmd+Q, Cmd+~, Cmd+M, Cmd+H, Cmd +Alt+H) can be used to manage Windows applications when using Coherence with enabled Crystal mode. - "Formatted text" and "Shared Clipboard" options can now be disabled via the Virtual Machine Configuration dialog. SWITCHER FOCUSED FEATURES - Simplified and improved Parallels Transporter user interface. - Like a Mac migration option that allows you to transfer your documents, photos, and music from PC to the corresponding folders on your Mac. - Migration of the Internet bookmarks and settings from Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Chrome on PC to the default browser on the Mac. - Supports import of Boot Camp partition into a Parallels virtual machine. - Windows automatic login support for enhanced switcher experience. - Automatic firewall detection during the migration from PC to Mac. - Supports import of Virtual Box and virtual machines. - Faster and smoother import of VMware, Virtual PC, and VirtualBox virtual machines. 3. System Requirements Hardware Requirements - Any Macintosh computer with an Intel processor (1.66 GHz or greater). To run 64-bit operating systems in virtual machines, an Intel Core 2 or higher processor is required. - Minimum 1 GB of memory, 2 GB of memory is recommended. - About 500 MB of disk space on the boot volume (Macintosh HD) for Parallels Desktop installation.

9 - About 15 GB of disk space for each virtual machine. To get information about your Mac OS X version, type of processor, and amount of memory, choose About This Mac from the Apple menu. 4. Installing Parallels Desktop If you purchased Parallels Desktop from the Parallels online store, download the latest build from Parallels Download Center. When the download is complete, open the Parallels Desktop DMG package file. To start the installation, double-click Install. If you purchased a boxed copy of Parallels Desktop, insert the Parallels Desktop installation disk into the optical drive of your Mac. Open the Parallels Desktop DMG package and double-click Install. 1. Parallels Desktop will connect to the Parallels update server and check for available updates. - If there is a Parallels Desktop version newer than yours, you will see the message offering you to install the latest version of Parallels Desktop or that in the DMG package. If you click Install current, the version present in the DMG package will be installed. If you click Download and install the new version, the latest version of Parallels Desktop will be downloaded to your Mac. - If there are no updates available or your Mac is not connected to the internet, the base

11 version will be installed. 2. In the Welcome window, click Continue. 3. In the Important Information window, read the product Readme file. Click Print to print the document or Save to save it for future reading. When finished, click Continue. Note: You can return to the previous steps by clicking the Go Back button. 4. In the Software License Agreement window, carefully read the License Agreement. We recommend to print the license agreement using the Print button or to save it for future reading using the Save button. Click Continue when finished. 5. To proceed with the installation, you must agree with the terms and conditions of the License Agreement. 6. In the Select a Destination window, select the hard disk where to install Parallels Desktop. You can install Parallels Desktop on the boot volume only, which is the hard disk where Mac OS X is installed. Other disks, if any, are unavailable for selection. Click Continue. 7. Click Install to start the Parallels Desktop installation, or click Upgrade if you are installing over the previous version of Parallels Desktop. Enter your password when prompted and click OK. 8. The installation progress will be displayed in the Installing Parallels Desktop window. 9. When the installation is complete, click Close to quit the Installer. After the installation you can launch Parallels Desktop from the Applications folder on your Mac. 6. Upgrading to Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac To upgrade to the new version, you need to install it as specified in the above procedure and activate it using an upgrade acivation key. You don't have to remove the previous version of Parallels Desktop before the upgrade: the installer will remove it automatically while installing Parallels Desktop 6. Upgrade Activation Key To activate your copy of Parallels Desktop 6, you should purchase an upgrade activation key. You may also need the key you used with the previous version. - If you activated the previous version of Parallels Desktop with a permanent key, you will need to enter the upgrade key only. - If you activated the previous version of Parallels Desktop with a trial activation key, you will be prompted to enter both keys: the key you used with the previous version and the upgrade key for the new version. - If you purchased the previous version of Parallels Desktop but haven't installed it on your

12 Mac, you will need two keys to activate Parallels Desktop 6: the upgrade activation key for Parallels Desktop 6 and a permanent or upgrade key for the previous version. Converting Virtual Machines Created in Parallels Desktop 3.0 and Earlier to the New Format Parallels Desktop 6, 5 and 4 use a format of virtual machines that differs from the Parallels Desktop 3.0 format. When you start a virtual machine created in Parallels Desktop 3.0, you will be asked to convert it to the new format. When prompted to convert the virtual machine to the new format, choose one of the following: - Click Backup & Convert to back up the virtual machine and then convert it to the new format. If you need to start this virtual machine in Parallels Desktop 3.0, you will be able to restore it from this backup. - Click Convert to convert your virtual machine without backing it up. The results of conversion cannot be reverted. If you choose this option, you will not be able to convert the virtual machine back to the old format. Upgrading the Virtual Machine Configuration and Updating Parallels Tools Once the virtual machine is converted, its configuration will be upgraded and the most recent version of Parallels Tools will be installed in it. Note: In Linux virtual machines, X Server may fail to start after the upgrade, so you may need to upgrade Parallels Tools manually in text mode. 7. Activating Parallels Desktop To fully run Parallels Desktop, you should activate it with an activation key. If you purchased a box version of the program, you can find the activation key printed either on the installation CD sleeve or on a card. If you purchased the program online, the activation key was sent to you by . If you haven't purchaced the product yet and want to evaluate it before buying, you can get a trial activation key that is valid for a limited period of time. To activate the product: 1. Open Parallels Desktop 2. Choose Activate Product from the Parallels Desktop menu. 3. In the Activate Product dialog, specify your name and your company name and type the activation key into the Activation Key field. Click the Activate button when finished. Now that your copy of Parallels Desktop is activated, you can create virtual machines, install operating systems in them, and work with the virtual machines' applications side by side with the applications on your Mac. After activating your copy of Parallels Desktop, it is recommended that you register it. Only registered users are able to download regular updates and stay current with the latest

13 improvements. 8. Setting Up a Virtual Machine When you first start Parallels Desktop, you will see the Welcome screen. If you upgraded from the previous version, click "Use your virtual machines" to access your virtual machines. If you want to create a new virtual machine, click New Windows installation. 1. The New Virtual Machine Assistant will appear. 2. Insert the operating system installation CD into the optical drive of your Mac and follow the assistant's instructions. 3. The assistant will create a virtual machine and install the operating system in it. 4. When the operating system is installed, Parallels Tools will be installed in your virtual machine.
