15 15 Understanding Cloud Computing - Definition Cloud Computing is the use of computing resources (hardware and software) that are delivered as a service over a network (typically the internet). Five Essential Characteristics (per National Institute of Standards & Technology) 1. On-demand self-service a consumer can request & receive computing capabilities at any time without requiring human interaction 2. Broad network access - capabilities are available over the network from a variety of user devices (mobile phones, tablets, laptops and workstations) 3. Resource pooling the provider s computing resources are pooled to serve multiple customers using a multi-tenant model (similar to multiple apartments in a single apartment building) 4. Rapid elasticity capabilities can be elastically provisioned and released based upon customer demand. To the customer, the capabilities available appear to be unlimited. 5. Measured service automatically control and optimize resources by metering some appropriate measurement such as number of users, storage used, bandwidth consumed or computing cycles used.
