2 WHAT IS THE STAAR TEST? Criterion-reference test measuring the state mandated curriculum or TEKS (The TEKS represent the basic curriculum for each subject area at each grade level in Texas.) A Timed Test (4 hours) Passing Standard set by raw score converted to a scale score Met Standard ( Cut Score ) established by State Board of Education in Austin

5 STUDENT SUCCESS INITIATIVE (SSI) TEA has designated 5th grade, 8th grade, and high school as SSI years 5 th graders must pass math, reading, science, and social studies classes They must also pass Math and Reading STAAR. 5 th graders are given 3 opportunities to pass the Math and/or Reading STAAR test (The 3 rd opportunity will take place in the June). Failure to meet this State criteria will result in retention in 5 th grade.

6 STATE ACCOUNTABILITY Index 1 Student Achievement (overall passing rate of all students tested) Index 2 Student Progress (from one grade to the next a student MUST either receive met progress or exceeded progress to be eligible for credit in this index did not meet progress is for a student that declined in scale score points from one grade to the next) Index 3 Closing Performance Gaps (monitors achievement levels in lowest two race/ethnicity groups from previous year AND Economically Disadvantaged student group) Index 4 Postsecondary Readiness (# students meeting FINAL Level II Passing Standards)

27 HOW CAN I HELP MY CHILD BE SUCCESSFUL? Ensure your child is prepared and organized for school on a daily basis. Check homework and notebooks. Stay engaged and involved with student. Practice skills with students outside of school (i.e. grocery store). Connect Math, Reading, and Writing to family experiences. If your child has been assigned tutoring, please make every effort for them to attend each week for the duration of the tutoring time. Communicate regularly with your child s teacher to stay informed of progress and how you can reinforce at home what is being taught in class.

28 HELPFUL INFORMATION TO REMEMBER Please do not make any appointments on test days. Allow your students to get a good night s sleep each night of testing. Make sure that have a good breakfast at home or arrive early enough to have breakfast at school. Make a special effort to praise your child s effort and hard work. Let them know you believe in them and love them unconditionally.

29 TEST TAKING STRATEGIES You can assist your child prepare for testing by doing the following: Make sure your child gets a good night's sleep before a test, and make sure your child eats properly the day of a test. Make sure your child has taken any needed medication. Ensure that your child is present during testing (children generally perform better when taking tests in their groups rather than at a makeup time). Get your child to school on time the day of the test. Wish your child good luck each morning of the test. Tell your child that he/she is special and that you believe in him/her! Remind your child the test is important. Encourage him/her to do his/her best. Encourage your child to stay focused on the test, even if other students finish early.
