Networking Semester 1 Final After Study Guide The following have been found to be answered wrong by a majority of the class. The drag & drop questions are not partial credit questions. 1. Where do switches and routers RUN the IOS from (not where it is stored)? 2. If you have a converged network (TV, Internet & phone on one line to the house), what does that do for the communications company (like Comcast)? 3. What does an Extranet allow certain people to do? a. What kinds of people would log into an Extranet? b. What device do you think those people log into? 4. You established that you cannot have a space in the name of a router or switch. What 2 happens if you do try and name the device with a space, like Switch(config)#hostname Billy Bob? a. After you hit enter and get that message, what will the prompt look like? 5. The order of importance (QoS). 6. What affects throughput? a. If there is a lot of traffic on the network, will that affect throughput? b. If there are people streaming movies on the network, will that affect throughput? c. Would the # of devices you have on your network in use affect throughput? d. Would the type of Internet service you have affect throughput in your network?
e. Would the reliability of cabling used in the backbone affect throughput? 7. During a TCP conversation, PC A sends data to PC B. PC A sends the data with a SEQ number. PC B responds back with an ACK # which is the SEQ + 1. If I send you SEQ#5, what will you respond back with as an ACK#? 8. What cable is used if you connect two switches together? a. If you didn t have one and just used a straight-through, the ports would have to automatically recognize the cable and make it work. That is the auto-mdix feature. 9. Describe what the default gateway is. 10. Packets that travel through a router is called a hop. A hop is a measurement, otherwise known as a metric. a. How many hops away is network a from the two router if it goes through three first? b. How many hops away is network a from the two router if it goes through one first? c. Since there are 2 paths to the same network, the two router will trust the routing table entry for network a with the lowest metric (or hop count) in this example. Which path will be the trusted one? -
11. What does a ping test? a. What protocol does it use? b. What does it display after you hit enter? i. This is feedback!!! 12. Know how to figure out if a given address and subnet mask will allow a certain amount of hosts. 13. The data link layer has 2 sublayers. a. Which sublayer goes up towards the network layer? b. Which sublayer goes down towards the physical layer? c. Which one would assist by identifying the network layer protocol used? 14. A broadcast IP address will always use a broadcast MAC address. In your ARP table, this is a STATIC (not changing) entry. It will always be there! 15. A Layer 3 switch is a mixture of a router and switch. It reads MAC addresses as well as assigning IP addresses to each port, as if it were a router. a. A Layer 2 switch ONLY reads MAC addresses. You can only assign the switch itself an IP address for remote management. 16. Network security ACCOUNTING keeps track of what users are doing. Think of it as the users are accountable for their actions. a. If you have to prove who they are (like a login), that would be AUTHENTICATION. b. What user can access on the network would be AUTHORIZATION. 17. Nslookup is a command prompt command that allows you to check an IP address of a domain name. 18. Ipconfig/displaydns is a command prompt command that shows you what has recenetly been translated by DNS. 19. ARP-a displays the MAC to IP mappings your NIC recently communicated with.
20. Router Modes: a. User Mode (Router>): what you first see when you enter the router, you can look only, limited commands are available b. Privileged Mode (Router#): what you see after you type enable. Ends with #. c. Global Config Mode (Router(config)#): what you see after you type config t. Changes made here and beyond affect the entire router. 21. Router Boot Order: a. POST: i. What does it stand for? ii. What does it do? b. Bootstrap: i. Knows where to look for the IOS so it can BOOT it. c. Load the IOS d. Load the config file or go into setup mode. 22. In order to connect to a wireless network, you need: a. b. Software to configure the above thing. c. Wireless router or AP 23. What connection do you configure to remotely log into a device? a. What connection would be secure to do this? 24. You know the destination IP address. What process would find out the destination MAC, within your network. This message goes to everyone in the network, which is called a. 25. If you don t have your default gateway address configure, or it s configured wrong, what WON T you be able to do? 26. When a host uses DHCP to automatically configure an IP address, the PC sends a message. The DHCP server replies with a
message which says hey, do you need this address? The PC sends back a which asks to use that address. Finally the DHCP server replies with a that says it can use that address. 27. You just bought a new wireless router. It comes with a default SSID (Linksys, for example) and a default administrator password (usually admin). a. You should change both of those! b. You should also configure the encryption. i. Which encryption is the weakest? ii. Which encryption is the strongest? 1. It s strong because it asks for the security key every time it connects. 28. Any FF00 IPv6 address is a multicast address. It can t be assigned to a user device.
