2 Profile Professor Dr. Jaap Lengkeek (1943) was head of the Socio-spatial Analysis Group at the University of Wageningen from 2000 until his retirement in December He studied cultural anthropology and sociology at the University of Amsterdam. He graduated with distinction in 1973 with a master thesis on the identity of a small rural village. He was successively employed at the Faculty of Planning of the Free University of Amsterdam, the Institute for Preventive Medicine (TNO) in Leiden, where he was involved in research on the relationship between housing and wellbeing, and as staff member of the Foundation for Recreation in The Hague. Since 1985 he worked at the University of Wageningen, first as scientific research coordinator of the interdisciplinary Working Group Outdoor Recreation. This Working Group included sociologists, planners, landscape architects, economists and others. He was coordinator and lecturer in the interdisciplinary specialisation Outdoor Recreation. In 1987 he joined the department of sociology, where he introduced the study of international tourism into the existing curriculum. In 1994 he completed a PhD at Wageningen University, with distinction, with a thesis about the different meanings of recreation and tourism. For the last ten years he was responsible for the MSc Leisure, Tourism and Environment and a part of the BSc Landscape Architecture and Spatial Planning at Wageningen University. In 2002 he was appointed full professor in Socio-spatial Analysis and in this capacity he supervised many PhD students in the field of tourism, landscape experience and cultural heritage. From 2002 till 2005 he was academic head of the Landscape Centre Wageningen University and Research Centre. In 2006 he became President of the Research Committee International Tourism (RC50) of the International Sociological Association.
3 After his retirement in 2008 he started his own office Jaap Lengkeek Scientific Research and Advice on Tourism, Heritage and Landscape. Some of the projects in 2009/2014 were: o Advising Wageningen University and NHTV Professional University Breda on a new joint scientific Bachelor program on the subject of Tourism and preparation of a joint research framework Sustainable and Innovative Tourism and Recreation Development; o A perspective on green areas in cities; o Participation in master classes on heritage; o Preparation of an international program on health tourism; o A post-doctoral course on recreation landscapes in Europe; o The reconstruction of Livingstone s travels through Malawi and local oral narratives; o Participation in cooperation between the Netherlands and Tatarstan on heritage preservation; o A replication of his research on local identity in Dutch rural community, the same as 37 years ago; o The accreditation of Les Roches-Gruyère University of Applied Sciences, Switzerland o The accreditation of Flemish Universities of Applied Sciences, Tourism and Recreation Management: Thomas More, Erasmus Hogeschool, Vives, Howest and PXL. o Development of an App to guide tourists in the footsteps of explorers through Africa, combined with locally and internationally relevant histories. o Higher education courses on explorers in Africa for seniors (Hoger Onderwijs voor Ouderen) at the universities of Utrecht, Leiden and Amsterdam. In 2010 he was appointed Rector Magnificus of NHTV University of Applied Sciences, Breda. In this position he developed an encompassing and innovative concept for integrated knowledge development (education and research) for universities of applied sciences.
