1 Staff and Student Travel Commuting Survey Results The survey was undertaken to establish the way in which staff and students commute to Queen Mary, why they travel this way and to help establish what infrastructure is required to facilitate these modes of travel. A detailed summary of all results is attached in Appendix 1. Question 1: Main Campus A good response rate was received from the Mile End Campus which accounted for 80.9% of the responses received. Figure 1 provides the breakdown of the responses from each Campus. Main campus: Charterhouse Square (7.9%) Mile End (80.9%) Whitechapel (10.1%) West Smithfield (0.7%) Lincoln s Inn Fields (0.4%) Question 2: Staff or Student Figure 1: Response rate per Campus The survey received 1,055 responses with 836 (79.2%) of these being from staff and 219 (20.8%) being from students. Question 3: School/Service The respondent was asked to indicate their School or Service. Good coverage was received with all but one School (SMD Education (Student Support)) providing a response. Some Schools/Services not listed also provided responses 1. The largest response was received from the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences with 104 responses (or 9.9% of total responses). 1 School of Business, School of Law, School of English and Drama, School of Languages Linguistics and Film, Careers, Students Union, Warden s Team, Centre for Commercial Law Studies and Principal s Office.
2 Question 4: Modes of Transport The respondents were asked to provide their main modes of transport to the College. This allowed the respondent to indicate more than one mode of transport if it was used. In total 2,077 responses were provided. The top five modes of transport for respondents were: % - Underground % - Pedestrian % - Overground % - Cycle % - Bus/Coach Other modes of transport listed included car driver (3.7%), car passenger (1.4%), taxi (0.4%), motorcycle (0.9%) and other mobility scooter, narrow boat and plane (0.1%). Of all car drivers, 30.4% only drove to the College indicating that 69.6% of car drivers use their vehicle as a means of getting to a public transport mode (i.e. bus, underground or overground). Question 5: Main Mode of Transport The respondents were then asked, out of all modes of transport they used, which did they consider as their main mode (longest distance or most frequent). Figure 2 provides the breakdown of the main mode of transport for each of the respondents. Figure 2: Main Mode of Transport Figure 2 demonstrates that 91% of all respondents choose a more sustainable mode of transport for their journey to the College on a daily basis.
3 Question 6: Choice of Travel Mode The respondents were asked to select a reason for their main mode of travel. The highest scoring factor was convenience with 45.6% respondents indicating this as the single biggest factor for their choice of travel. A complete breakdown of the reasons for choice of travel is provided in Figure 3. Overground offers best and most comfortable service Quickest Public transport is not reliable Transport not needed Cycle facilities almost non-existent no secure, covered parking Car parking is unsuitable at Mile End Question 7: Other Modes Occasionally Used Figure 4 provides a breakdown of the other modes of travel that respondents use. The train, bus, underground, cycling and walking all make up the top secondary modes of transport for respondents.

5 Question 9: Comments and Suggestions Respondents were asked to provide their views on QM facilities and current environmental campaigns. Table 1 provides a breakdown of the key response areas in order of number of times the issue was raised. Recommendations It is recommended that: 1. The main issues raised relating to the availability of cycle infrastructure and showering facilities be addressed by the Estates and Facilities Directorate. This will commence with the application of grant funding from the TfL Superhighways campaign at the Mile End Campus. A review of current shower/change facilities should be undertaken with a cost and programme should be developed to be used to bid for the upgrade of facilities. 2. The requests for more car and motorcycle parking and charging for car parking to be referred to the Estates and Facilities Directorate for consideration. 3. The Estates and Facilities Directorate to review the comments and provide advice/feedback to the Sustainability Committee to address comments. 4. The Sustainability Team to reply direct to respondents who raised specific questions and provided contact details. 5. The Sustainability Team and Cyclist Group to work together to improve content on the Cycling webpage (
