11 Issues drivers Global energy projections mean that fossil fuels will be required for several decades Global Climate Change (up to and post 2050) targets will need full range of solutions REN will become significant in the energy mix only in time - portfolio approach needed Acceptability of Nuclear? 20 FENCO Objective Set up of an ERA-NET for the development of a technology path that gives the opportunity to share knowledge and funding options for a step-by-step improvement of the fossil energy technologies. This ERA-NET will link the R&D and demonstration needs of EU member states, the EU industry and academia on an extended European level to describe a technology path towards low and near zero emission power plants.

28 Technology Platforms - concept Stakeholders getting together to define a Strategic Research Agenda on a number of strategically important issues with high societal relevance where achieving Europe s future growth, competitiveness and sustainable objectives is dependent upon major research and technological advances in the medium to long term.

31 CSLF: What it is? A US initiative, 17 countries participate, including the UK, Italy, Germany, France and Norway, plus the EC. (Netherlands and Denmark have applied) The charter to promote research and technological development in CO2 C+S, signed in Washington on June 25, 2003 Mission: The CSLF is a framework for international cooperation in research and development for the separation, capture, transportation and storage of CO2

33 CSLF: Organisation An organization for governments Agreed and monitored at Ministerial-level Two working groups (chaired by the US) Policy Group which guides the operation of the CSLF Technical Group which considers and recommend technical projects and actions A Secretariat (US/DoE based) provides administrative support An advisory group to interface with projects and stakeholders may be formed
