T_R 1:00 to 1:50 pm. Objectives: This course is an introduction to cartography, the art and science of mapmaking. We will explore cartographic theory and principles through class lectures, and you will get hands on experience producing maps at the computer through class projects. As time permits, we will also explore emerging trends in cartography and geo-visualization. As much as possible, it is my hope that you develop a greater understanding and appreciation for maps in general, as well as the map production process. Learning Outcomes. At the conclusion of the course, you should be able to: 1 Describe how maps are used in a variety of contexts. Describe and apply the cartographic process to the production of several types of maps. Define and explain important cartographic principles (e.g., scale, map projections, symbolization, data classification, map design, etc.) and apply these principles appropriately to the map production process. Demonstrate the use of ArcGIS and other GIS software for map design and production. Provide a critical analysis and evaluation of several important issues related to map use and production. Describe current and emerging trends in map production and cartographic research. Texts: (1) On the Map: A Mind-Expanding Exploration of the Way the World Looks. Simon Garfield. Two quizzes 15% + Lab exercises 35% + Midterm 25% + Final 25% Attendance. You are expected to attend lecture. Lecture material provides the basis for your laboratory exercises and your textbook does not cover all of this material. Thus, if you miss a lecture, you can expect to have problems with the lab exercises. You are responsible for all material covered in class. If you miss a class, even for a legitimate reason (e.g. a university sponsored event in which you are participating), you are still responsible for the material. You should get notes from a fellow student for any classes you miss. If you have a university sponsored event that requires you to miss class, please have your instructor provide an excuse prior to the day you will be absent. Some work during this course will require time outside of the normal class period (map collection, lab exercises etc.) Class Participation. Please participate in class! Contribute comments and ask questions. Volunteer answers to questions I ask during class. If you re lost, say so. Ask questions or contribute comments

The more you participate, the more you will learn and only you can learn the material I cannot learn it for you. So participate in class! Readings. Readings are listed on this syllabus below and on the course web site. You should do assigned readings before coming to class. Use your textbook to fill in information or details missing from the lecture outlines. Tests. Exam questions taken from readings and lectures. Make-up exams are allowed only for extreme cause and with a verified excuse. Cell phones, PDAs, Blackberries or other electronic devices are not allowed; these devices must be turned off and put away during tests. Exams consist of multiple choice and short essay answers. Cell Phones and Electronic Devices. Cell phones, Blackberries, PDAs, MP3s and other electronic devices should be turned off during class. Talking on cell phones, text-messaging, checking for messages, ing, and listening to music during class is not allowed. It is rude and distracting to other students in the class and to the instructor. Laptops are allowed with prior permission from the instructor. All cell phones and other electronic devices must be turned off and put away during tests. Internet Resources.
