1 Tomato Varieties 2012 Yolo County Master Gardeners Annual Plant Sale Most of the varieties of seedlings have been grown for the last four years by local Master Gardeners at their homes and in our demonstration garden at Woodland Community College. The Yolo County comments are based on our experience growing them and our public taste tests at the Woodland Tomato Festival each August. Variety Seed Catalog Description and Comments on Growing in Yolo County Color Type Ripens Abe Lincoln Medium sized round, disease resistant, slightly acidic Red Indet. Late Yolo County: A dependable staple red variety. Big Daddy VF Brand new bred from Big Boy. Huge 15 oz fruits ruby red, round meaty. Red Indet. Late Yolo County: Recommended by the Sacramento Bee, new to Master Gardeners this year. Black Krim Beefstake-like with intense flavor slightly salty. Fruits slightly flattened. Purple/black with green shoulders. Black Indet. Mid Yolo County: Good producer and scores high in taste tests. Boxcar Willie Large fruit with rich, sweet flavor but sufficient acid. Good for canning, sauce, salad and juice. Good resistance to disease and cracking. Red Indet. Mid Yolo County: Moderate producer scoring well in taste. Brandywine Large plants with clusters of medium to large beefstake fruit with an old fashion tomatoey flavor. Heat loving. Red Indet. Late Yolo County: Moderate producer with above average taste. Burbank Produces medium-sized, round fruit perfect for slicing or canning. Tests high in amino acids. Perfect for drier climates Red Det. Mid Yolo County: (Insufficient information due to poor growing conditions in 2011) Carmello Heavy producer of medium sized red fruit. Good slicer; salads and sauces. Red Indet. Mid Yolo County: Consistent producer of quality fruit throughout the season. Celebrity All American winner, superb flavor, disease resistant, round average crack Red Det. Mid resistant fruits. Yolo County: A reliable garden staple with high production of tasty fruit.

2 Cherokee Purple Beefstake fruit to 1 pound with rich complex flavor. Purple black with dark interior Black Indet. Late Yolo County: Good late season producer of above average taste. Container s Choice VFF Beefstake like with high yields. Suitable for growing in a container. Unique wrinkled leaves makes an attractive plant. Red Det Mid Costoluto Genovese Heat loving very meaty with very heavily lobed shape. Full flavored slightly tart. Beautiful slicer and for sauces. Red Indet. Mid Yolo County: Mid to late season producer of great tomato for making sauces. Dagma s Perfection Vigorous abundant medium sized slightly flattened, pale yellow with delicate light red striping. Flavorful with overtones of tropical fruit and a hint of lime. Yellow Indet Mid Druzba Big harvests of round medium sized fruit. Sweet/tart with good disease resistance Red Indet. Late Yolo County: Moderate production with good taste. Early Girl VFF Meaty, ripe red fruits 4-8 oz, blemish resistant heavy yield on strong plants. Red Indet. Early Yolo County: Consistent high scoring sweet taste and excellent producer. Gary Ibsen Gold Produces lots of very juicy large globe shaped fruit with tropical flavor but enough acid. Yellow Indet. Mid Yolo County: A must have yellow/orange tomato. Strong grower. Golden Sunray Heavy producer of medium, smooth, round fruit. Produces well in hot dry weather. Good eating fresh, salads or sauces. Yellow Indet. Mid Yolo County: Healthy producer of good tasting tomatoes. Green Zebra Small, round yellow/gold with green zebra stripes and lime-green flesh. Heat loving with lemon/lime flavor. Green Indet. Mid Yolo County: A must have for flavor and color but best eaten soon after harvesting. Hawaiian Pineapple Large beefstake with marbled yellow/orange coloring and great flavor. Yellow Indet. Late Yolo County: Scores high in taste and appearance Legend Short, bushy plants produce 3-4 smooth round fruit with few seeds. Great for salads Red Det. Early and canning. Strong tolerance to west coast blight strains. Good for containers. Yolo County: Good producer.

3 Lemon Boy Large flavorful fruit great for salads and gourmet dishes. Yellow Indet. Mid Yolo County: Good tasting low acid fruit; healthy plants. Paul Robeson Purple/black beefstake fruit slightly flattened round shape; up to 4 with green shoulders and red flesh. Earthy, exotic flavor won Best of Show at Carmel Tomatofest. Black Indet.. Mid Yolo County: A favorite black slicer scoring high in taste. Pink Berkley Tie Die Heavy producer of dark pink/purple fruit with green stripes. Very meaty with excellent flavor Pink Indet. Early Yolo County: Recommended by the Sacramento Bee. Radiator Charlie s Large slightly flattened pink/red fruit with meaty flavor and few seeds. Pink Indet. Late Mortgage Lifter Yolo County: Scores well in tasting. RAF French tomato but brought to US from Spain. First cultivated in 1969 to resist salt water in the soil. May do well in soil with high salts. Name refers to its natural resistance to A. Fusarium wilt. 3 fruits. Red Indet. Mid Yolo County: New variety to Master Gardener s this year. Santa Clara Canner Very uniform med. sized fruit with rich complex flavor and juicy meaty flesh. Good for salads, cooking and canning. Red/orange in color Red Indet. Mid Yolo County: Good producer and scores high in taste. Tangella Big producer of clusters of 2 round fruit. Disease resistant with intense fruity flavor with nice tang. Yellow/orange yellow Indet. Mid Yolo County: Scored among top five in taste. Tangerine Fruit is bright yellow/orange with a tangerine shape. Good producer Yellow Indet. Mid Yolo County: Attractive glistening fruit. Taxi Bright yellow mild, non-acid, great for lunchbox. Compact plants 2 X 2 Yellow Det. Late Heirlom Wisconsin 55 Great all purpose medium sized round fruit, highly productive. Strong skin makes ideal for shipping also good for cooking, canning and salads. Red Indet. Mid Yolo County: Scored in top three in taste.

4 Cherry/Grape/Plum Tomatoes Black Plum Looks like a small paste tomato but has thin walls. Sweet tangy flavor deep red color with green shoulders Red Indet. Mid Yolo County: Consistent high producer of tasty tomatoes. Cherry Punch Brand new variety. Earliest cherry on 2 high 3 wide plants. Developed to have 30% more Vit. C than average tomato. Red Indet. Very Yolo County: Recommended by Sac Bee, new to Master Gardeners this year. Early Gardeners Delight Very sweet; also known as sugar lump. ¾ to 1 ½ fruits loaded with sugery sweet flavor Red Indet. Early Yolo County: The heaviest producer throughout the season. Jelly Bean Red Bite sized red fruit in grape shaped clusters up to 30 in bunch. Hold well after picking, disease resistant. Red Indet. Mid Yolo County: Big producer scoring high in taste. Jelly Bean Yellow Bite sized red fruit in grape shaped clusters up to 30 in bunch. Hold well after picking, disease resistant. Yellow Indet. Mid Yolo County: Big producer scoring high in taste. Solar Power Brand new variety introduced this year. Succulent 2 sweet fruit developed to have 3 X the beta carotene of average tomato. Yolo County: Recommended by the Sacramento Bee. New variety for Master Gardeners. Sweet Million FT High yield, super sweet cherry. Matures early produces until frost. Red Indet. Early Sun Gold VFF Very sweet fruit but tends to crack easily after picking so rarely found in stores. vigorous plants need lot of support Yellow Indet. Mid Yolo County: Consistently scores at or near the top in flavor, and a heavy producer. Tumbler Produces lots of sweet cherry sized tomatoes while growing in a container or hanging Red Det. 5 Paste/Sauce/Drying Tomatoes San Marzano Later than Roma, holds well on vine and in storage. Hang in clusters extra high solids content perfect for canning smaller fruit than Redorta. Red Indet. Mid Yolo County: (Insufficient information due to poor growing conditions in 2011) San Marzano Large Italian paste with great taste. Heat loving and good enough to eat right off the vine. Redorta Yolo County: The best for canning. Red Indet. Mid Principe Borghese Short plants with high yields of big clusters of small plum shaped fruit. Prized for drying as retains flavor. Italians hang whole plant to dry, but also great for salads or canning Red Det. Mid Yolo County: The best for drying. Martino s Roma Very productive paste tomato with clusters of 5-8 fruits. Red Semi Mid Yolo County: (Insufficient information due to poor growing conditions in 2011) Det. Explantation of Terms Always open pollinated plants, which means the seeds can be saved and used to reproduce the same tomato. s have generally been saved for their superior qualities and passed on generation after generation. Seeds cannot be saved because they will not come true. Seed must be purchased from a seed company who produces it by crossing particular parent plants that have desirable growth, taste, bearing, or disease resistant characteristics. Determinate (Det) The plant grows to a certain point then stops and sets fruit which then mostly ripen in a short period of time. Height is often four feet or less and may not need staking. Indeterminate (Indet) The plant grows continually until it dies at the end of the season, continuing to flower, set, and ripen fruit. Plants can get quite large and most often produce best when staked or grown in a wire cage.
