1 Lesson 2.08 Objectives (Learning Goals) At the end of this lesson, you will be able to: Organize informational writing into a logical structure. Support ideas in informational writing with evidence from Properly include relevant facts, details, quotes, images, and technical terms Use transitions to connect ideas, sentences and/or paragraphs in an informational text Academic Vocabulary - Body Paragraphs - Subheadings - Topic Sentence: - Supporting Sentences: - Evidence - Signal Phrase - Direct Quote - Works Cited - Reliable Resources - Technical Language In this lesson, you will write the body paragraphs of your module 2 essay based on the topic you chose in lessons 2.04 and When you finish with lesson 2.08, your essay will look something like this and include all of these requirements:

2 Let s go over each of these requirements one by one. BODY PARAGRAPHS: is the main part of your essay or paper. Your paper will have 3 body paragraphs. Each body paragraph contains a SUBHEADING (or title) that tells readers what the paragraph is going to be about. Because your paper is about the positive and negative effects that your invention has had on society, most likely, your 3 body paragraph topics/subheadings will be as follows: The History of The Positive Effects of The Negative Effects of Body paragraphs always start with a TOPIC SENTENCE (a sentence that tells the reader what the paragraph is going to be about). The topic sentence is followed up by SUPPORTING DETAILS that discuss the idea or ideas in your topic sentence. Supporting details will use examples and/or EVIDENCE from your research to support your ideas. First you will introduce your idea on the topic, but then you must support that idea with evidence from your research in the form of a DIRECT QUOTATION (using an author s language word for word). Be sure to use a SIGNAL PHRASE (according to, in a research study by) to introduce any direct quotation that you use. For example, in the airplane article above, the author said: Many people use airplanes to travel each year. This is a good point; however, the author needs to back that idea up with What if the author would add in this fact from his research: According to Airlines for America, the FAA projects U.S. air travel demand to

3 top one billion passengers in That direct quote surely drives home the fact that MANY people use airplanes to fly each year doesn t it? When using direct quotations, we need to be sure to give credit to the person that we are quoting from. We do this by using a SIGNAL PHRASE (according to, in a research study by ) to introduce the quotation. We also complete a WORKS CITED page at the bottom of our article that lists the links to the source(s) of our direct quotations. This allows our readers to check our sources and do additional research on the topic if they so desire. Be sure that the resources you are using are RELIABLE (.edu,.gov,.org). As you write your paper and include research to back up your points you will naturally include TECHNICAL LANGUAGE into your paper. TECHNICAL LANGAUGE is language connected with one particular subject or job. As the author above wrote about airplanes, he talked about the scientific theory that allowed airplanes to fly in the first place, something called the Smeaton coefficient. The author also mentioned things like the 3-aixs control shaft and fixed winged aircrafts these are all examples of technical language. You ve heard the saying, a picture is worth 1,000 words? Well, in many cases this is true. Because of this, one of the requirements of this assignment is for you to add in a picture or graphic that reinforces the information you are presenting in your Let s Get Started! You will write three or more BODY PARAGRAPHS for your informational article that you have been working on in Lessons 2.04 and Assignment Instructions/Check List: 1. Include your introduction paragraph from your introduction lesson 2. Write a subheading for each section of the body. The History of The Positive Effects of The Negative Effects of 3. Include at least one graphic, image, or chart. 4. Write a topic sentence for each body paragraph. (Highlight in RED) 5. Clearly support your topic sentence with evidence from your research, using signal phrases. (Highlight in BLUE) 6. Use one direct quote with a signal phrase, proper punctuation, and the source. (Highlight in GREEN) 7. Use transitions phrases at the beginning of each paragraph. (Underlined those) 8. Use technical language to show your understanding of your topic. (Highlight in PURPLE) 9. Include at least one link to a resource that supports your thesis. Link: 10. Use correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Write the BODY SECTION of your Informational Article HERE (be sure to include the introduction from lesson 2.06):
