1 Evaluation of On-Site Supervisors Survey The Department of Counselor Education performs an annual evaluation of the school and community counseling students based on the clinical instruction through surveying the graduate candidates regarding their on-site supervision experience. This process assists the department in improving academic learning outcomes that are aligned with clinical preparation standards. Our students were surveyed through their practicum and internship classes to determine the effectiveness of the on-site supervision. The survey questions examined their clinical experience and included additional feedback regarding the following evaluation criteria: supervisory process and relationship, legal and ethical issues, evaluation process and site evaluation. The following table lists the survey questions, as well as the mean score for the past year: Practicum/Internship Evaluation of On-Supervisor Evaluation My supervisor (=Not Applicable; then rate 1-5 with 1 being strongly disagree and meaning strongly agree): Question: Spring 2011 mean scores (n=5) Fall 2011 mean scores (n=1) Summer 2012 mean scores (n=2) My supervisor explained his/her role as my supervisor My supervisor made me feel at ease with the supervisory process My supervisor assisted me in developing my counseling skills My supervisor gave me feedback about my role as a counselor that was accurate and that I could use My supervisor helped me clarify the issues that my client brought to the session My supervisor assisted me in understanding my own feelings about the client My supervisor helped me to focus on specific counseling strategies to assist the clients My supervisor helped me to develop techniques to resolve conflict 1

The vast majority of students reported an excellent experience during their practicum and internship with respect to the supervisory process and relationship, legal and ethical issues, and evaluation process and site evaluation. There were two qualitative responses provided by the counseling candidate and the additional comment includes: 2
3 My site supervisor did a wonderful job of demonstrating the different roles and tasks that are required of an elementary school counselor. The graduate student enjoyed the internship experience and the site supervisor was very acknowledgeable and informative. The site supervisor provided the internship student with support on growing clinical skills and providing insight as far as the clinical ideas/actions, and general concepts to perform. Field clinical instructions evaluation continues in the practicum and internship classes every academic semester. The students are orientated to the clinical field process at the beginning of the semester and program evaluation data is shared with them. The ends of the semester clinical instructions gather qualitative data based on site observation notes and feedback from the clinical supervisors. Students submit a final on-site supervisor evaluation at the end of each academic semester. The Clinical Coordinators review all feedback given on the evaluation and use the on-site supervisor evaluations to determine the effectiveness of our placement sites. 3

A summary is provided below with recommendations that have been implemented with the practicum and internship candidates in the Department of Counselor Education. A department partnered with the Curriculum Department to provide an ethics training that consisted of Mr. Langston Jackson from the Georgia Department of Professional Standards to discuss professional ethics with all field students in the School of Education. There was a greater focus having training sessions for site supervisors and debriefing sessions for field candidates. 9
