1 PSY 306 Internship in Applied Psychology APPLICATION GUIDELINES 1. There are normally 15 spaces available in a section of PSY 306. It is offered every Spring semester. 2. You cannot enroll in PSY 306 through online course registration. You must apply and be chosen by the Psychology Department faculty. 3. There are course prerequisites in order to apply Prerequisites: PSY 201, and either PSY 202 or PSY 203. Junior or senior standing and instructor s permission. 4. The application process. Complete the 1-page Application Form and send it to the Chair of the Department: Dr. Shane Murphy. Warner Hall Room 311 Murphys@wcsu.edu Attach your resume or CV to the Application. 5. The deadline for applications is the end of the work day on the Friday of Week 10 of the semester before the Internship. This date will be published on the WCSU Psychology website. 6. Students will be informed of the decision of the Department within 2 weeks of the application deadline. Students who accept placement in PSY 306 will be enrolled in the course by the Registrar. 7. The class meets once a week at a regular WCSU class time.
2 PSY 306 Application 2 8. Students will be supervised on-site by a field supervisor who will be in regular communication with the course instructor. Students will also meet twice a semester with their instructor for individual supervision sessions. 9. Students collaborate with the course instructor in selecting their practicum site, and must obtain 120 hours of practicum experience in a semester, over a period of at least 10 weeks in a spring or fall semester. 10. Tracking Hours. Students must complete a weekly form tracking their hours at the internship, signed by their agency supervisor. 11. Written Feedback Students will be given written feedback by their agency during the semester and also again at the end of the semester. Student Learning Outcomes Students will: Be able to describe and provide examples of professional ethics in psychology. Integrate and synthesize models and theories of psychological disorders in understanding the issues of clients they work with. Exhibit respect and empathy for clients across a diverse range of presenting issues. Respect diversity across cultures, ethnic backgrounds, gender, and socioeconomic class. Propose and justify appropriate psychology-based interventions in applied settings (e.g., clinical, school, community, or industrial settings). Explain how psychological constructs can be used to understand and resolve interpersonal and intercultural conflicts. Course Outline Class material will focus on integrating the psychological knowledge base students have gained in either PSY 202 Abnormal Psychology or PSY 203 Clinical Psychology with their applied experiences in their internship setting. Issues of assessment and diagnosis,
3 PSY 306 Application 3 and treatment and social/environmental interventions will be emphasized. Professional ethics will also be a focus of both instruction and supervision, including issues of confidentiality, competency, and dual relationships, among other relevant topics. Assessment plan Student learning will be assessed through instructor evaluation during supervision, qualitative feedback from the field supervisor, and completion of a major written assignment addressing the course concepts and integrating the student s psychological knowledge with their applied experience.
