1 INTERNSHIP EVALUATION RESULTS FOR THE SCHOOL COUNSELING PROGRAM FOR SPRING 2014 MAY 2014 Students in the School Counseling program participated in their internship during the spring semester of the school year. An online application system (i.e., Qualtrics) was used by supervisors to complete evaluations. The areas listed served as a general guide for the activities typically engaged in during counselor training. The students were rated on the following scale: 1: Requires close supervision in this area 2: Functions adequately and/or requires occasional supervision 3: Functions extremely well and/or independently NA: Not applicable to this training experience Results aggregated across 7 individuals were obtained through analyzing the supervisors responses on the School Counseling internship evaluation form. The purpose of this report is to provide the overall results. The quantitative results have been analyzed and the qualitative responses are reproduced verbatim except for where students names have been omitted. Some of the highlighted findings of the report include the following: All interns (100%) were rated as functioning extremely well and/or independently in the following areas: Counseling, Consultation, Coordinating, Curriculum Management, Individual Planning, Managing, and Professionalism. Supervisors recommended a final grade of A for all (100%) of students. Additionally, all (100%) students were rated as extremely good (top 1-19 th percentile) compared to other graduate students at their level of training and experience. 1

3 1. Counseling Demonstrate knowledge of theory, practice, and ethical standards relative to individual and group counseling. Articulate the theoretical basis for one s own counseling practice. Demonstrate appropriate counseling techniques and interventions to use within the academic, career, and personal/social domains. Demonstrate the ability to provide individual and group counseling services that are appropriate to the interests, needs, and developmental levels of diverse populations and cultures. Demonstrate the ability to evaluate and assess the effectiveness of one s counseling interventions and to modify accordingly. Demonstrate the ability to interpret tests, student data and other appraisal results appropriately in the counseling environment

Consultation Demonstrate knowledge of the theory and practice of school-based consultation Demonstrate the ability to consult and collaborate with teachers, staff, administrators and community-based organizations in understanding and meeting the needs of all students. Make appropriate referrals to school and community support personnel. Demonstrate knowledge of a wide variety of appraisal instruments and techniques to enhance decisionmaking and planning Coordinating Demonstrate knowledge of the school and community resources that complement the provision of counseling services Initiate and maintain productive working relationships with students, staff, parents, administration and community-based organizations. 4

5 4. Curriculum Management Demonstrate the ability to design and implement a planned, sequential and developmentally appropriate school counseling curriculum. Demonstrate the ability to deliver the curriculum using systematic approaches. Promote understanding and appreciation for diverse populations and cultures. Demonstrate the ability to evaluate the impact of instruction. Demonstrate the ability to modify teaching methods based on feedback and evaluation. 5. Individual Planning Demonstrate the ability to assist students in establishing personal goals and developing future plans. Articulate a method of systematic delivery of individual planning to all students appropriate to their age and grade level. 5

6 6. Managing Manage time, space, materials, and equipment for the provision of the counseling program. Understand, organize and facilitate the use of technology. Conduct periodic evaluations of he counseling program. Use evaluations of the counseling program to modify programs and activities. 7. Professionalism Demonstrate knowledge of the ethical standard of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). Demonstrate knowledge of the ethical standards of the American Counseling Association (ACA). Demonstrate knowledge of state and national program standards. Demonstrate knowledge of the Federal and state laws pertinent to the role, function and services of the school counselor. Participate in professional development activities. In comparison to other graduate students in school counseling at this level of training and experience, in my opinion, this intern overall performs at the following level: (Select one.) 7 I recommend a final grade of: Answer Response % A 7 100% Please write any additional comments ( =7). Student has been a wonderful counseling intern. She is always taking the initiative and seeing if there is anything she can do. She has great work ethic. She has gone above and beyond and created an after school chess club which has been very well received. I know for a fact she works nights and weekends on lessons, documents, and planning for this position. She has a cool, calm manner about her that is very well received by parents, students and staff. Jenny is only my 2nd counseling intern, but has proven herself to be an exceptional intern. Student was prepared very well by Uconn for this field. She has data to back up everything she does and is up and running independently as a school counselor. Student showed an excellent grasp of the counseling profession. She has a warmth and positive demeanor that enhances her work with students. As with any new counselor there are areas that will strengthen with time, but I was extremely impressed with her as an intern. Although Student is the first intern I helped to supervise, I have worked with many over the years. She truly stood out as the strongest candidate. She will be a fine School Counselor. Student is self-motivated and works extrememly well with students. He often collaborates with teachers, administrators, and parents and takes an active role in our school's Counseling Program.. He is willing to do whatever is needed. He has been an asset to Middle and our School Counseling Program. He is professional, polite, and a pleasure to work with. Student has been a pleasure to work with and an asset to School. She has the ability to work with a wide range of students and is well liked and regarded by school staff. Student has been an outstanding, creative and original intern. She has strong counseling skills and works extremely well with students of all backgrounds. Student is ready to become a professional school counselor. I do not have any areas of concern regarding her professional preparation. In fact, I believe she will excel in this field. Student has been a true asset to our counseling department this year. She has participated and assisted in all aspects of our program and is willing to take on any challenge and works independently. She will be missed by students and staff, but I'm sure will make a positive addition to a counseling department at another school in the future. I wish her the best of luck! 7
