1 M. D. Anderson IS Technology Standards This document presents current information technology standards defined at M. D. Anderson. Standards are essential elements of information technology hardware, software and network implementation. Internally-developed technology standards benefit an institution by defining scopes and facilitating optimum allocation of IT support staff and resources. Standards also facilitate the implementation and maintenance of enterprise architecture and bolster computer security and information privacy. In addition, standards-based interfaces better enable disparate devices and applications to communicate and work together. To be added to these lists, any hardware or software items or types must first be evaluated and certified by the Integrated Desktop Services Technology Architecture Team. To view M. D. HP printers are recommended due to institutional IS staff familiarity and warranty work certification. Note: The IS Division recognizes that the standard hardware listed above is inadequate for certain advanced clients' computing requirements. Examples include employees who run AutoCAD, use video-editing software, or require a workstation with exceptionally high multitasking capability. Dell's "Precision" line of workstations ( is designed to meet the needs of such users. Apple also offers hardware for advanced Mac users. 5 Preferred software The Information Services Division defines a sub-category of non-standard software as preferred software. Preferred software includes applications that, while not included in our institutional standard software, are generally recognized as being commonly used and useful for particular business purposes. The table below lists all currently-available preferred software and, where applicable, the minimum OS, memory, and storage requirements to run the applications. Anderson's switches and routers: EIGRP BGP Use of routing protocols by personnel outside Network Services is forbidden. The following IPv4 routed protocols are supported only for use within the M. D. Multi-user or shared databases pose a unique risk due to the sensitivity and classification of the information stored within them. Failure to adequately manage and secure databases can lead to unintentional or unauthorized modification, destruction or disclosure of critical and sensitive business information. Computer security and information privacy are the primary drivers in the development and implementation of multi-user or shared database standards. There are over 10,000 databases of various scopes and sizes that have been developed and implemented at M. D. Anderson. With this in mind, the need to standardize existing and new multi-user or shared databases is important to assuring the highest availability and integrity of institutional information. last saved 2/6/08 page 10 of 11

11 Microsoft Access and other similar personal database applications should not be used for multiuser or shared database development. These applications are typically designed for single-user use to build simple applications that reside and are used on a single computer. Although these applications may support some object-oriented techniques, they fall short of being fully objectoriented development tools and are not true client-server databases. The Division of Information Services does not provide support for such personal database products. Only Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server should be utilized when designing and developing any multi-user or shared database application at M.D. Anderson. Shared development, test and operation infrastructure exists for both of these technologies, as well as the needed support services and staffing.
