1 Name dr. G.A. (Gerard) van den Berg dr. G.A. (Gerard) van den Berg Projectmanager Integrated Water Management Profile Gerard van den Berg holds a PhD in geochemistry. His scientific interests include hydrogeochemistry of groundwater, biogeochemical and transport processes in water systems, contaminant behaviour and sediment-water interaction. He is currently involved in integrated water quality and water cycle studies. His current research topics include the development and implementation of adaptive strategies to improve water quality and water resource availability, the development of sustainable techniques for extraction of ground water, and the multiple use of the subsurface as sustainable water reservoir for freshwater and energy storage. His projects are carried out in co-operation and on behalf of national and international scientific institutes and water management agencies, as well as national drinking water companies. Gerard has published several papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals and presented project results at national and international meetings and conferences. He has also reviewed manuscripts for different scientific journals. As project manager he manages both research and consultancy projects. He is involved as project manager in the collaborative FP7 project PREPARED, which aims at the development and implementation of adaptive tools to cope with hydrological extremes in the urban water cycle. In PREPARED researchers work closely together with SME s and end users. Education 1998, Ph.D. in Geochemistry, Utrecht University 1993, M.Sc. in Earth Sciences, Utrecht University Further education and training 2012 Training in business practice Integrated Project management (TSM Business School) 2009 PRINCE-2 Foundation Several short trainings in personal development and advisory skills 1993 Research training at Institute of Environmental and Energy Systems Studies, Lund Institute of Technology (LTH), Lund, Sweden Work experience 2004 onwards: (senior) scientific researcher and project manager Water Systems and Water Technology, KWR Watercycle Research Institute; Integrated Water Management, Sustainable subsurface planning, Freshwater availability in the delta, Urban Water Management, Water and sediment

Collaborative project with 35 international research and end user partners aiming at developing and demonstrating technologies for effective adaptation of water supply and sanitation systems to cope with the effects of climate change. Project manager for Strengthening the capacity of the Ministry of Health in Bulgaria, Agentschap NL ( ); Assignment aimed at capacity building in Bulgaria to implement the European Drinking Water Directive. National policy related projects: Project manager and senior researcher Several projects on the Protection of drinking water resources ( ), Vewin. Ongoing activities and projects focusing on the protection of drinking water sources (groundwater and surface water) under the EU Water Framework Directive and Groundwater Directive, including priority pollutants, setting of standards, monitoring of water resources and data management, nitrate reduction measures. Project manager and senior researcher Threatening substances for drinking water production from surface water ( ), RIWA Maas/Meuse. Several projects that list substances threatening the drinking water production in the international Meuse river basin, including an adequate advice on the measures to effectively reduce contaminant release to the river basin. Senior researcher Working group drinking water criterion on pesticides ( ), Ministry of Spatial Planning, Housing and the Environment (VROM) of the Netherlands. Member of an expert working group that evaluates the use of plant protection products and develops an assessment methodology for drinking water production, to be used in the registration procedure for pesticides. Research projects: Project Manager for many project carried out within the Joint Research Program projects on behalf of the Dutch and Flanders Water Supply industry, a.o.: Climate proof water chain and water cycle; Water quality monitoring; Multifunctional water use; Freshwater availability and drinking water; Thermal Energy Systems and groundwater vulnerability; Implementation of Geo-information tools in Water Supply and Asset Management; Tools to reduce levels of Cyanobacteria in stagnant water systems; Water supply and well management. Project Manager Climate proof water supply, Knowledge for Climate Research Program ( ), greenhouse industry; This project focuses on the development of strategies and technologies for (subsurface) water storage to improve the freshwater availability to water users (drinking water,
