The Promise Scholarship The MATC Promise The Promise Scholarship
Promise. It s about the future. Experts agree increasing the education level of our workforce is one of the most effective ways to strengthen our community and the economy that keeps it running. But a four year degree is not the only way to meet this need. In the next five years more than half of all openings will be in middle-skill jobs those requiring a professional certificate, diploma, or associate degree. For over one hundred years MATC has been fulfilling its promise to provide the education and training that enables individuals to move into the skilled professions. And it stands ready to meet the next challenge by providing the training for the workforce needs of the future. For a low-income student, a postsecondary education from MATC can be the stepping stone to a good job. For businesses, it can be the lifeblood of their industry. For everyone, it can be the key to a brighter future. 67% Percent of jobs in America that will require a postsecondary education by (American Assoc. Community Colleges 2012) 51% Percent of openings in Wisconsin that will be for middle skill jobs by (Manpower Talent Shortage Survey 2015) 1 The Promise Scholarship The MATC Promise The Promise Scholarship

Promise. It s about potential. High school graduates who enroll in college immediately after graduation are three times more likely to obtain a degree that will lead to a professional career. Unfortunately, those who would benefit the most from a postsecondary education are less likely to enroll. Only half of low-income high school graduates across the country enroll in college and the same holds true for minority students. What holds back qualified students from enrolling? It s many things, including confusion about financial aid and the enrollment process -- especially for students from families with no college experience. But mostly, it s about money. In one national survey, 80% of college qualified students reported that lack of financial aid was a deciding factor in their decision not to enroll in college. How much money? For a low-income student who is eligible for financial aid, it could be less than $1,500. Compare that to the thousands of dollars that a skilled worker generates for businesses in our community. 65% Percent of low-income high school graduates who decide not to enroll in college. (Center for Public Education 2014) 80% Percent of college qualified students who reported that lack of financial aid affected their decision not to enroll. 6 Promise. It s about hope... and opportunity. For many low-income high school students, a college education starts to look less like a dream for the future and more like an unaffordable luxury beyond their reach. What if you could help a promising high school student achieve their dream of attending college even if they come from a low-income family? What if that college education was part of a career pathway that meant they were career-ready when they graduated? It s possible. The MATC Promise ensures that qualified low-income high school graduates in the greater Milwaukee area can afford to attend MATC. The MATC Promise is more than a scholarship. It s a comprehensive program that helps students access financial aid for which they are already eligible then fills any gap with a scholarship for tuition and fees. This means scholarship dollars are used effectively and go to the students who need help the most. And it s easy to understand. For eligible students it means free tuition and fees for two years. For businesses and our community it means an educated workforce. 67% 31% Percent of students who began high school with hope of attending college but did not enroll. (Center for Public Education 2014) Percent of community college students eligible for financial aid who do not apply (Estimate, US Department of Education NAPSAS 2012) 5 The Promise Scholarship The MATC Promise The Promise Scholarships

Promise. It s a mutual commitment. Who is eligible? How does it work? Scholarships will be targeted to low-income high school graduates who reside in, or graduate from a high school within, the MATC district. We are defining low-income as being eligible for a federal Pell Grant and having an expected annual family contribution of $3,000 or less, as determined by financial aid application. To participate, candidates must meet specific benchmarks for performance and persistence in their senior year of high school and while attending MATC. These are: As a high school senior: On-time graduation 90% attendance in senior year 2.0 minimum GPA in senior year ACT score of 16 or higher Take advantage of dual enrollment and advanced placement opportunities in senior year As an MATC student: Enroll full-time in 4 consecutive semesters not including summer semester 2.0 GPA minimum 8 hours of community service per semester Participate in academic support and workforce readiness programs In return MATC provides support to help students enter college, stay on target for graduation and ensure their career readiness by: Assisting students with enrolling at MATC and filling out the federal financial aid forms to access all available student aid Providing hands-on support to students, such as tutoring and career planning Covering up to 60 credits of tuition not covered by financial aid or other scholarships The result? A promising student becomes a successful college graduate, and a productive member of the workforce. 7 The Promise Scholarship The MATC Promise The Promise Scholarship

Promise. You make it possible. With your help, we can ensure that financial need does not prevent Milwaukee s promising students from going to college and contributing to our community. The MATC Promise is part of a larger campaign being launched by the MATC Foundation to raise one million dollars in new gifts directed to student scholarships. To sustain the MATC Promise for generations to come, the Foundation is also establishing a Promise Scholarship Endowment Fund. Generous donors like you will make it possible to reach our goal. Unlike other investments that you can make, a gift to the MATC Promise has a direct impact on a young person s life. Whether you choose to make a one-time gift or a multi-year pledge, 100% of your donation to the MATC Foundation will go directly to student scholarships. Please accept our sincere expression of appreciation for your support. Thank you for believing in the power of education to transform lives, industry, and our community. Dr. Vicki J. Martin President of MATC 9
