2 1.4 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS: A. General: Handrails and railings shall withstand structural loading as determined by allowable design working stress of materials based on the following standards 1. Aluminum: AA Cold-Formed Structural Steel: AISI SG-673, Part I 3. Fully Tempered Glass in Glass supported handrails and railing requires a design with a safety factor of 3 applied to the applicable modules of rupture listed in Mechanical Properties in AAMA Aluminum Curtain rail Series No. 12, Structural Properties of Glass B. Structural Performance: Provide handrails and railings capable of withstanding the following structural loads without exceeding allowable design working stress of materials for handrails, railings, anchors and connections: 1. Rail of Guards: Shall withstand the following loads: a. Concentrated load of 200 lbf (0.89kN) applied at any point and in any direction b. Uniform load of 50 lb-ft. (0.07kN-m) applied horizontally and concurrently with uniform load of 100lbf-ft. (0.14kN-m) applied vertically downward c. Concentrated and uniform loads above need not be assumed to act concurrently 2. Rails Not Serving As Top Rails: Shall withstand the following loads: a. Concentrated load of 200 lb/f (0.89 kn) applied at any point and in any direction b. Uniform load of 50 lb/ft. (0.07kN-m) applied in any direction c. Concentrated and uniform loads above need not be assumed to act concurrently 3. Infill Area: Shall withstand the following loads: a. Concentrated horizontal load of 200 lbf (0.89 kn) applied to 1 sq. ft. at any point in system, including panels, intermediate rails, balusters, or other elements composing infill area. Loads need not be assumed to act concurrently with loads on top rails in determining stress on guard C. Thermal Movements: Handrails and railings shall allow for
3 movements resulting from 120 deg F (49 deg C) changes in ambient and 180 deg F (82 deg C) surface temperatures. Base engineering calculation on surface temperatures of materials due to both solar heat gain and nighttime-sky heat loss D. Resistance: Separate incompatible materials to prevent galvanic corrosion 1.5 SUBMITTALS A. Submit under provisions of Section B. Manufacturer's data sheets on each product to be used, including: 1. Preparation instructions and recommendations 2. Storage and handling requirements and recommendations 3. Installation methods C. Manufacturer's product lines of handrails and railings assembled from standard components 1. Grout, anchoring cements and paint products D. Shop Drawings: Show fabrication and installation of handrails and railings. Include plans, elevations, sections, details and attachments to other work E. Samples: 1. Color Selection: Submit manufacturer's color charts showing the full range of colors available for products with factoryapplied color finishes 2. Finish Selection: Provide sections of railing or flat sheet metal which depict available mechanical surface finishes 3. Verification Samples: For each type of exposed finish required, prepared on components indicated below and of same thickness and metal indicated for the Work. If finishes involve normal color and texture variations, include sample sets showing the full range of variations expected inch (152mm) long sections of each unique linear railing member, including handrails and top rails F. Qualification Data: Installer shall submit documentation demonstrating capability and experience in performing installations of the same type and scope as specified by this section. Include lists of completed projects with project names and addresses, names and addresses of architects and owners, and other information specified G. Product Test Reports: Submit documentation demonstrating compliance with requirements based on comprehensive testing of current products
4 1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Manufacturer s Qualifications: Single manufacturer with a minimum of 20 years experience manufacturing, fabrication, painting and/or anodizing architectural products, aluminum handrails and railings, shall provide all primary products specified in this section B. Installer Qualifications: Installer shall have a minimum of five (5) years experience installing systems of similar type and scope as those specified in this section C. Mock-up: Provide assembled samples of railings, fabricated from full size components, including top rail, post handrail and infill. Show method of finishing members at intersections. Samples need not be full height 1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING A. Store products in manufacturer s unopened packaging until ready for installation B. Store and dispose of solvent-based material and materials used with solvent-based materials, in accordance with requirements of local authorities having jurisdiction 1.8 PROJECT CONDITIONS A. Maintain environmental conditions (temperature, humidity and ventilation) within limits recommended by manufacture for optimum results. Do not install products under environmental conditions outside manufacturer s absolute limits 1.9 WARRANTY A. At project closeout, provide to Owner or Owners Representative an executed copy of the manufacturer's standard limited warranty against manufacturing defect, outlining its terms, conditions, and exclusions from coverage. 1. Surface Finish Warranty: Five (5) year limited warranty. 2. Material Integrity Warranty: Five (5) Year 1.10 EXTRA MATERIALS A. All supplemented materials not expressly specified in this section shall be approved by the architect prior to installation PART 2: PRODUCTS 2.1 MANUFACUTER(S) A. General: Provide metals with a minimum of 20% recycled content, melted and manufactured in the USA and free from pitting, seam marks, roller marks, stains, discolorations, and other imperfections where exposed to view on finished units B. Aluminum: Alloy and temper recommended by aluminum producer and finisher for the type of use and finish indicated, with not less than strength and durability properties of alloy and temper designated below for each aluminum profile required and and 1. Extruded Bar and tube ASTM B221 (ASTM B221 M) alloys 6005-T T5/T52 2. Extruded Structural Pipe and Tube ASTM B 429, Alloys, 6005-T T5/T52 3. Drawn Seamless Tube: ASTM B210 (ASTM B 210M) alloy 6063-T Plate and Sheets: ASTM B209 (ASTM B209M) alloy 6061-T6 5. Castings: ASTM B 26/B 26M, Alloy A356-T6 C. Brackets, Flanges and Formed Metals: of same type of materials and finishes supported rails, unless otherwise indicated 1. Provide brackets with predrilled holes for exposed anchorage 2. Provide interlocking pieces for concealed anchorage 3. Provide interlocking pieces for concealed fasteners 2.4 GLASS PRODUCTS AND GLAZING MATERIALS
6 A. Glass: Fully tempered, uncoated, transparent flat glass meeting the requirements of ASTM C 1048, Type FT, Condition A, Type 1, Quality q3. Products shall comply with properties indicated for glass, thickness and manufacturing process that have been tested for surface and edge compression according to ASTM C 1048 and for impact strength according to 16CFR, Part 1201 for Category II materials 1. Clear Glass: Class 1 (clear) 2. Thickness: ¼ inch (6mm) unless noted 3. Manufacturing Process: By vertical (tong held) or horizontal (roller-hearth) process, at manufacturer s option. Horizontal process shall be performed tong-less. Glass shall be free of tong marks and other visual distortions 4. Subject to compliance with requirements, provide glass permanently marked with certification label of Safety Glazing Certification Council or other agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction B. Glazing cement and Related Accessories: provide glazing cement recommended or supplied by railing manufacturer for bonding glass to metal sub rails 2.5 FASTENERS A. Handrail anchors: select fasteners of type, grade and class required to produce connections suitable for anchoring handrails and railings to other types of construction indicated and capable of withstanding design loads B. Handrail and Railing Components Anchors: Use Fasteners fabricated from same basic metal, unless otherwise indicated. Do not use metals that are corrosive or incompatible with materials joined 1. Provide concealed fasteners for interconnecting railing components and for attaching them to other work, unless exposed fasteners are unavoidable or are standard fastening method for handrail and railing as indicated 2. Provide Phillips flat-head machine screws for exposed fasteners, unless otherwise indicated C. Cast-in Place and post installed anchors: Anchors of type indicated below, fabricated from corrosion resistant materials with the capability to withstand loads without failure, a load equal to six times the load imposed when installed in unit masonry and equal to four times the load imposed when installed in concrete, as determined be the testing per ASTM E 488 conducted by a qualified independent testing agency 1. Cast-in Place anchors 2. Chemical Anchors
7 3. Expansion Anchors 2.6 GROUT AND ANCHORING CEMENT A. Non-shrink, Non-metallic Grout: Premixed, Factory packaged, nonstaining, non-corrosive, non-gaseous grout complying with ASTM C Provide grout specifically recommended by manufacturer for interior and exterior applications B. Interior Anchoring Cement: Factory packaged, non-shrink, nonstaining, hydraulic controlled expansion cement formulation for mixing with water at project site to create pourable anchoring, patching and grouting compound. Use for interior applications only 2.7 FABRICATION A. Assemble handrails and railings in shop to greatest extent possible to minimize field splicing and assembly, unless noted. Disassemble units only as necessary for shipping and handling limitations. Clearly mark units for reassembly and coordinated installation. Use connections that maintain structural value of materials joined B. Form changes in directions of railing members as shown on approved drawings C. Mechanical connections: Fabricate handrails and railings by connecting members with railing manufacture s standard concealed mechanical fasteners and fitting, unless otherwise indicated. Fabricate members and fittings to produce flush, smooth, rigid, hairline joints D. Brackets, Flanges, Fittings and anchors: Provide manufacturers standard wall mount brackets, flanges, miscellaneous fittings and anchors to connect handrail and railing members to other construction E. Glass Panels: Tempered glass cut to final size and shape before heat treating: Provide for proper edge clearance and glass penetration. Provide thickness indicated in drawings, not less than required to support structural loads F. Provide insets and other anchorage devices to connect handrails and railings to concrete or masonry. Fabricate anchorage devices capable of withstanding loads imposed by handrails and railings. Coordinate anchorage devices with supporting structure G. Shear and punch metals cleanly and accurately, remove burrs from cut edges H. Cut, reinforce, drill and tap components as indicated on drawings to receive finish hardware, screws and similar products I. Close exposed ends of railing members with prefabricated rail end
8 fittings J. Provide mounted handrail wall returns at wall end unless otherwise indicated. Close ends of returns, unless clearance between end of railings and wall is ¼ inch (6 MM) or less 2.8 FINISHES A. GENERAL 1. Comply with NAAMAA s Metal Finishes Manual for Architectural and Metal Products for recommendations for applying and designating finishes 2. Appearance of finished work: 5520 a. Variations in appearance of abutting or adjacent units are acceptable if they are within one-half of the range of approved samples. Noticeable variations in the same unit are not acceptable b. Variations in appearance of other components are acceptable if they are within the range of approved samples and are assembled or installed to minimize contrast B. ALUMINUM FINISH 1. Finish designations prefixed by AA comply with the system established by the Aluminum Association for designating aluminum finishes 2. Pretreatment and apply finish coatings to exposed metal surfaces per licensed agreement between SAPA Profiles and PPG (paint manufacturer) for exterior use 3. Pre-treat is chrome phosphate conversion coating conforming to ASTM 1730 Type B method 5 and 7 4. PPG (Manufacturer) Duracron one coat system meeting AAMA 2603 Specification, with 5 year manufacturer s warranty of 5 years 5. PPG (Manufacturer) Duranar two, three, and four coat systems available as optional up charge meeting AAMA 2605 Specification, with manufacturer s warranty of 20 years PART 3 EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION a. Color and Gloss: as selected by Architect, from manufacturer s full range of color and gloss, including custom colors. Selections might include up to four different selections for color b. Color:
9 A. Examine substrates to receive anchors verifying that locations of concealed reinforcements have been clearly marked for installer. Locate reinforcements and mark locations if not already completed 3.2 GENERAL INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS A. Fit Exposed connections together to form tight, hairline joints B. Cutting, Fitting and Placement: Set handrails and railings accurately in location, alignment and elevation measured from established lines and levels and free from rack 1. Do not weld, cut or abrade coated or finished surfaces of railing components that are intended for field connection by mechanical ot other methods without further cutting or fitting 2. Align rails so variations from level or parallel alignment do not exceed ¼ in 12 feet C. Corrosion Protection: Coat concealed surfaces of aluminum alloys that will be in contact with grout concrete, masonry or dissimilar metals with heavy coat of bituminous paint D. Adjust handrails and railings before anchoring to ensure alignment at abutting joint s, space post at interval indicated on approved drawings, but not less than required to achieve structural loads E. Fastening to In-Place Construction: Use anchorage devices and fasteners where necessary for securing handrails and railings for properly transferring loads to In-Place Construction 3.3 CONNECTIONS A. Welded Connections: Use mechanical joints for permanently connecting railing components. Use wood blocks and padding to prevent damage to railing members and fittings. 3.4 INSTALLING GLASS PANELS A. Glass, Handrails and Railings: Install assembly to comply with railing manufacturer's approved drawings. Attach unitized panel assemblies to building structure, then insert and connect factory-fabricated and/or assembled glass panels 1. Erect glass handrails and railings under direct supervision of manufacturer s authorized technical personnel 3.5 CLEANING A. Touch-up Painting: Immediately after erection, clean field welds, bolted connections and abraded area of shop paint and appoint exposed areas with same material B. Restore finishes damaged during installation and construction period so no evidence remains of corrected work. Return items
10 that cannot be refinished in field to shop make required alterations and refinish entire unit, or provide new units 3.6 PROTECTION A. Protect finishes of handrails and railings from damage during construction period with temporary protective coverings approved by railing manufacturer. Remove protective coverings at time of substantial completion End of Section
