Cederroth First Aid for Eyes
Using the right equipment im proves the chance of saving your eyes Proven to be more effective than sodium chloride solution on alkali and acid splashes. The most common eye injuries are caused by dust, dirt and splashes from irritant chemicals getting into the eye. If a hazardous substance gets into your eye or the eye of someone in your vicinity, rapid access to First Aid is crucial. Cederroth s buffered eye wash gives a better chance of saving your eye than normal sodium chloride solution. As well as diluting and flushing out the eye, the liquid has a neutralizing effect on alkali and acid splashes (the effect is generally stronger on alkalis than acids). You therefore have a better chance of saving your eye with Cederroth s buffered eye wash than with a normal sodium chloride solution or water, because it restores the normal ph value of the eye more quickly. 2 3
The effectiveness of Ceder roth s buffered eye wash When alkalis or acids get into the eye, the ph value of the eye changes and corrosion occurs. Alkaline substances, for example lye, cement, washing soda and dishwasher detergent, are the reasons behind most corrosive injuries. In the event of an accident, the first thing you need to do is to quickly start to flush away the harmful chemicals and restore the ph value of your eye. This is why Cederroth s eye wash is buffered. It works as a shock absorber and restores the normal ph value of the eye more effectively than normal sodium chloride solution. Cederroth s borate-buffered eye wash generally has a stronger effect on alkalis than acids. This is why Cederroth Eye Wash has been recommended by eye specialists in a study that compared the effect of different rinsing solutions on alkalis 1 ). ph value ph value in the eye during 15 minutes of rinsing, after 20 seconds of exposure to lye (2M NaOH) 10 9 No rinsing Cederroth Eye Wash NaCl 0.9% 8 Tap water seconds Cederroth Eye Wash is proven more effective for alkali and acid splashes. When alkalis or acids get into the eye, the ph value of the eye changes and corrosion occurs. Cederroth s boratebuffered liquid helps to bring the ph value back to neutral again, unlike an unbuffered eye wash, which simply dilutes and rinses. The eye has a neutral ph value (7). Acids have a low ph value and alkalis have a high ph value. Alkalis penetrate deeper into the eye s tissue and can cause serious damage to the eye, which is often permanent. Acids, for example battery acid, cause corrosive injuries on the outer parts of the eye and can normally be treated. Common causes of injuries are exploding batteries, splashes from lye, cement, lime, dishwasher detergent, some industrial cleaning agents, ammonia, degreasing agent, paint, washing soda and adhesives. Metal filings, dirt and dust should also be immediately flushed away to make sure they do not get stuck in the eye. 1) Rihawi et al., Graefe s arch. Clin. Exp. ophtalmol. (2006) 244:
A better eye wash both inside and outside When every second counts, you must not hesitate. The function of the bottle is just as important as the content. Cederroth Eye Wash is designed to give quick and effective help in an emergency situation. The bottle is easy to open The bottle opens easily by firmly twisting the green dust cover either clockwise or anti-clockwise. If the bottle is in the wall bracket, it will open as soon as you twist it out of the bracket. The size of the bottle makes it easy to hold. Clear graphical instructions on the bottle showing you what to do 100% phosphate-free If you have an accident with a substance that contains calcium (cement, concrete or lime), you can safely rinse with Cederroth Eye Wash as it is 100% phosphate-free. Calcification may occur with eye rinses that contain phosphates the phosphate in the liquid reacts with the calcium, forming an insoluble white deposit which can further damage the eye. 4.5 year shelf life! Cederroth Eye Wash has one of the longest shelf lives on the market for these kinds of products, which saves money and improves safety. It is a good idea to store the bottle in the wall bracket, so it has a fixed place and everyone knows where it is. The integrated eye cup guides the liquid towards the eye without any unnecessary waste The eye cup helps to keep the eye open during rinsing. A colleague can check that the eye is open by looking through the transparent cup. Generous flow of liquid for 1.5 minutes The bottle is designed to rinse the eye with a generous flow of liquid for around 1.5 minutes. Make sure you have more bottles at hand to rinse for a longer period of time, at least 15 minutes. Proven to be more effective for alkali and acid splashes Cederroth s buffered liquid helps to bring the ph value back to neutral again, unlike a normal sodium chloride solution or water, which simply dilutes and rinses. 6 7
First Aid in different shapes and sizes It is particularly important to have procedures in place for handling emergency accidents in workplaces with a high risk of eye injuries, for example construction sites, warehouses, catering kitchens, industry and laboratories. Our product guide helps you to find the right products to meet the risks at your particular workplace. Discover our entire range of eye wash products at Remember! Place the eye wash bottles in areas of the workplace where there is the highest risk of accidents, so that you can start rinsing as quickly as possible. The rule of thumb is within arm s length! 6 How to stop a corrosive eye injury: Start rinsing the eye immediately. The effect is the greatest during the first seconds. Rinse generously. The eye must be open during rinsing. Use your fingers to help keep the eye open. Rinse for a long time. Rinse for at least 15 minutes. Use several bottles of eye wash or continue rinsing at a plumbed in eye wash unit. If you do not have access to First Aid products, use warm water and a cup. Remember that if you injure your eye, it must always be examined by a doctor. Bring several bottles of eye wash for continued rinsing on the way to medical care
