1 U2 SUBWAY STATION POTSDAMER PLATZ Location: Phase: Size: Berlin Full design services and site supervision 750 m The U2 subway is one of Berlins earliest and most renowned line, for it is connecting the cities east and west ever since directly. At its central portion the line went only back into service with the fall of the Berlin Wall and is now serving the famous Potsdamer Platz area, the Holocaust memorial north as well as the Jewish Museum in the south. After almost 20 years of service a careful restoration of this listed building was scheduled along with the implementation of handicapped access facilities. The design of the lift enclosure was directly derived from the historic image of the original metropolitan subway station lit by a huge skylight, which was unfortunately closed off earlier already. Thus the lift enclosure was designed in a way to allow as much daylight into the station as possible and to signal lights into the busy Berlin nightlife to attract passengers. Construction is completed.

2 HYATT REGENCY MOSCOW Location: Moscow Phase: Design development consultancy Size: m 2 Contribution: OOO SPeeCH Moscow, nps tchoban voss GmbH & Co KG Berlin Interiors: ARA Design London The 10 storey Hyatt Regency Moscow is the initial project in a larger context of redeveloping the historic Dinamo Sports ground site and public park in central Moscow. It combines a 4 star hotel of 320 keys, Spa and sports facilities with a conference and convention building. Supplementary functions such as shops and boutiques, restaurants and bars are included as well as an extensive underground services facility that is part of an overall combined technical core and service roads. The key design feature is its placement at a major Moscow transport hub and the envisioned neighbouring hypermodern VTB Arena which will host international football, hockey and other sports as well as major national arts and social events. The contribution during the design development phase led to the final designs through a series of alternative scenarios. Technological issues were raised in the light of the larger development plan as well as the organization concepts from the areas main infrastructure down to the scale of the property s functional areas and further to room layouts. Construction will be completed in 2014.

3 CITY LIGHT HOUSE OFFICES Location: Berlin Phase: Full design services and site supervision Size: m 2 Contribution: CFAI GmbH & Co. KG City Light House closely follows the larger scale re-vitalisation projects of Berlins City West. Neighbouring the renowned Neues Kranzler Eck of Murphy Jahn Architects and Hans Kollhoff s Mövenpick Hotel it replaced an existing 19th century building. Following many decades of re-building and re-shaping of the existing structure, the building was then no longer effectively useable. Time for a radical cut had come and the transition of the Schimmelpfeng city block into an highly dense urban highrise project, later named Zoofenster was already in planning process. With such prominent surroundings, the client was willing to develop not only an outstanding façade design, but also to contribute to the city s future by adapting key principles of an up-to-date energy efficient and sustainable building design. Such in mind the architecture was developed creating a very clear volume, a light structural framework and technological installations radically integrated into the general designs. The building features a double-skin façade glazing, that allows natural ventilation as well as comfort and shields noise from outside the building. Façade portions that are at stairs, lobbies and adjoining rooms have been clad with lightweight natural stone panels, framing the glass façade portions. The entire skin comes as a compact thermal shell, which lacks any surface relief. Thus the depth of the volume can be experienced visually from outside dramatically through the different façade layers and room divisions. Heating and cooling are integrated into the building core structure. Cooling is provided by a water reservoir that is used for sprinkler systems as well and is frequently cooled down at night times using renewable energies collected at day. Office users are able to use a common roof garden at 3rd level that gives much of an urban oasis, where virtually no greens are present in the near surrounding. Construction is completed.

4 FEDERATION TOWER Location: Moscow City Phase: Invited Competition winning project / Full S&C design services Size: m 2 Contribution: Design Company LL, Moscow Federation Tower / Hamburg Moscow City is an ambitious development project and the only approved agglomeration of highrise buildings in Moscow. A total of 2,5 million square meters will be produced with 15 towers. Federation Tower is at the time of the start of its construction Europe s tallest building with 506m overall height. The complex consist of 4 volumes: 2 towers of 93 and 62 storeys each, a delicate spine holding panoramic lifts between the 2 towers and a multifunctional base. The building program includes Offices, apartments, two 5 star rated hotels, conference facilities, a subterranean pedestrian shopping mall linking the towers to 12 other neighboring buildings, as well as a large variety of restaurants and specialty bars. The smaller tower holds Europe s most elevated fully equipped sports pool at level +61 together with an extensive Spa and Gym. The Federation Towers have been re-defining standards in highrise technologies and logistics both in the Russian construction sector and building regulation process. The towers have been ordered to withstand airplane impact at any height and is therefore fully constructed in massive concrete. Numerous compartmented sections are supported by outrigger framing to limit eventual disaster effects dramatically. The facades were designed to balance the rigid structure and as lightly as possible by means of a delicate and highly transparent curtain wall. Natural ventilation will be provided in all apartments. Planning process is finished, construction ongoing.

5 MIRAX PLAZA Location: Moscow City Phase: Design services consultancy Size: m 2 Contribution: nps tchoban voss GmbH & Co KG Berlin The project of an international business center in the heart of Moscow is developed upon a major transport hub and in very close proximity to the historic and political center of the city. The design combines 2 highrise buildings and a unified base close the Moskwa river embankment. The key design principles we focused on the reduction of energy losses in the extreme continental climate and the creation of sufficient and pleasing indoor public space. The base therefore was designed on a extensive platform that covers parts of the massive railway line and highways, shielding the critical effects off. Furthermore the buildings should allow for a greener, quieter environment for users and neighbours. The concept deploys indoor gardens in the base and open skylobbies in the 2 towers. The building program combines offices and apartments oriented towards the river embankment. retail outlets and a shopping mall linked with the transport facilities nearby. Construction completed in 2012.

6 RESORT ASTRA MONTENEGRO Location: Budva/Montenegro Phase: General and urban design services consultancy Size: m 2 Contribution: nps tchoban voss GmbH & Co KG Berlin Located at the adriatic shore and the pictorial bay of Budva the site is in the centre of a rapidly growing tourist destination. The focus of the urban planning was to combine urban and rural, western and montenegrian styles and standards in a pleasing way. The program asked for a high density project which would be attractive all year rather than being seasonally deployed. Thus we developed a combination of small to large apartments and villas to rent or to own. In addition a 5 star rated hotel was introduced with additional functions such as a concert hall, conference and business facilities, plus restaurants, bars and cafe s. The complex was supplemented with some retail. The shore would support a marina, pools and ponds, natural retreats and beaches. In combination the scheme is a multifunctional recreational and resort complex. The preservation of the natural assets and beauty led to a diverse design that re-assembles local elements as well as modern features at a certainly high level. Following the topography the limestone and wood cladded villas hide in the natural grove, while providing intimate individual terraces and places. The tall hotel and accompanying areas reproduce familiar nautical shapes that fit gently with the landscape and sea site. The resort is fully sustainable planned within the projects perimeter. Energy harvesting and saving features are part of the designs. Conventional traffic is limited to an underground parking, pedestrian walkways link all facilities. Elevators and rampways suitable for all sorts of e-mobility provide fast connections as far as the city of Budva. Construction scheduled to 2014.

7 T29 Refurbishment Location: Berlin Phase: Full S&C design services Size: m² Apartments and Retailspaces The residential building in the central district of Berlin is more than 120 years old. In its construction time it was a bourgeoise type of a building holding a few but large apartments at different levels of luxury, complete with maids chambers and separate service stairs. Nevertheless time took its toll in the form of a complete re-organisation of all floorplans in the post war era and the then believed modernization of all facades. Nowadays we returned the building carefully to its origins and added some up to date attributes. The client brief asked for re-establishing the former large apartments, outside space for each of them and a rooftop extension. The buildings core fabric was carefully analysed and restored, with an overall complete restoration of all the damaged brick- and timberworks. The facades have been re-animated with a lively handcrafted colour-textured plaster. Wooden window and door details contrast with curved steel-made balconies, that in the end make the only decoration and most visible mark of the refurbishment. The exterior garden has been re-designed completely together with the introduction of a water permeable surface that contributes to the new but ecofriendly standards. Those include insulation of the entire building in an aesthetic and less dominant term as well as various technical means of energy saving and efficient use throughout the building. Interiors are individually designed to the comfort the taste and spending of the new owners and at each floor separately. Material and decoration vary between the apartments. The 2 penthouse extensions each hold large private roof gardens that promote a sense of rural living in the heart of the city. Construction is completed.

8 GRAND HYATT MOSCOW Location: Moscow City Phase: Direct Comission / Full design and tender services Size: m 2 / 418 bays Contribution: Design Company LL, Moscow Federation Tower / Hamburg Interiors: Yabu Pushelber NY / HBA London Grand Hyatt Moscow is part of the Federation Tower Moscow project at a proximity of only 4km from the Kremlin. The 5 star hotel was to be equipped with all functions including a convention and banqueting center. The program within the complex structure of Europe s tallest building (62 storeys/245m and 93 storeys/365m) is highly ambitious and demanding to all involved. The guestrooms are allocated at levels +33 to +61 and connected directly with the skylobby, restaurants, wellness and sports facilities in both towers. To achieve this, the towers have been linked by skywalks to allow for short interchange ways. The Grand Hyatt Moscow has been designed to feature spectacular spaces in both tower top portions. At the same time it can offer 2 fully equipped ballrooms of 400 seats each along with a large number of conference rooms in the basement. These basement facilities have been completed with a 300 seat open plan specialties foodcourt comforting all guests and tenants of the complex. The interior design is developed by YabuPushelberg in New York and Toronto. Its main theme is the coexistence and beauty of Russian and international traditions at highest levels of the arts and culture. Guest rooms provide stunning views over the city of Moscow, which could as well be enjoyed from the prominent bathtubs. The hotel features it s own elevator system as well as service deliveries and disposal fully separated from the tower s systems. The main BOH services facility is directly connected to the main underground delivery system of Moscow City. Construction is currently on hold.

9 INFORMATION PAVILLON MIRAX PLAZA Location: Moscow Phase: General and urban design services consultancy Size: 250 m 2 Contribution: nps tchoban voss GmbH & Co KG Berlin MIRAX PLAZA, an international business centre at the junction of Kutusovsky Prospect und 3rd Ringroad consists of 2 highrise towers and a base building. It combines various commercial, residential and leisure functions at a gross area of m2. MIRAX PLAZA is part of the transformation of a former industrial area at Kulneva Road/ Fili Rayon. The scheme asked for a highly recognizeable information pavilion that would provide space for the public presentation, lend and sale of the property. The design of nps tchoban voss was chosen among several international entries. The basic idea was to combine an elevated viewing platform with the presentation and office use. The resulting form gives variable views to the site and provides a huge billboard column at the shaft of the platform tower towards the heavily trafficed Kutusovky Prospect and Ringroad. Pavilion and tower smoothly blend into one body. The tower reminiscent to the ingenious Schuchov radio tower constructions is an open truss and girder system. The construction principles were acknowledged with the pavilion itself in order to provide an uninterrupted and flexible interior. Consequently the main entrance is roofed by the form and heading directly into the gallery space and adjoining tower access. Planning approval granted, construction currently holded.

10 Convention and Performing Arts Centre Location: Recklinghausen Phase: Invited competition entry / Full design services Size: m 2 The historic listed building of the so-called Saalbau Recklinghausen is birthplace of the theatre festival Ruhrfestspiele. Established in 1946 this anual is a major art event of international importance. The festival later became a new and more spaceous place at the Festpielhaus in Since then the old Saalbau building was reduced to a significantly smaller audience and lost perspective. In 2010 an architectural invited competion was held to find alternative concepts for the building to elevate it technically and functionally into the new millenium. The core of the building had to be preserved, the Grand Hall and galleries. We decided to strip the building down to its main feaures of contextual recognition: In addition to Grand Hall we preserved the far older restaurant building and the expressive staircase tower. Among these elements we distributed a pathway system of lobbies, reception halls, stairs and hallways that would allow to use the entire building in a variety of sets. The Grand Hall as the very heart of the newly formed Convention and Performing Arts Centre was replenished with a set of smaller rooms and halls, that could be used in groups as well as for smaller festivities and lectures. Thus we found ways to open up the larger auditorium of the old days to a much wider number of users and smaller groups at the same time. The goal was, to diversify the use so, that smaller art clubs and voluntary associations as well as school classes could get used to a new and open social centre in the heart of the community.
