2 Horizon The new Framework Programme for Research and Innovation World s largest funding programme for research and innovation about 77 billion euro ( ) Combines the formerly separate funding programmes for R&I (FP7, EIT, CIP) Stronger focus on innovation: closing the gap between knowledge and market In 2014 and 2015 the SME Instrument will sponsor SMEs operating within 13 themes Stronger participation of SMEs in H2020: 20%-goal for SMEs participation of SMEs in H2020 by introducing the SME instrument

3 The SME instrument the 3 phases Phase 1: Concept and feasibility assessment Input: Idea/Concept: "Business Plan 1" (~ 10 pages) 10% budget Activities: Feasibility of concept Risk assessment IP regime Partner search Design study Pilot application etc. Output: elaborated "Business plan 2" Phase 2: R&D, demonstration, market replication Input: "Business plan 2" plus description of activities under Phase 2 (~ 30 pages) 90% budget Activities: Development, prototyping, testing, piloting, miniaturisation, scaling-up, market replication, research Output: "investorready Business plan 3" Phase 3: Commercialisation Promote instrument as quality label for successful projects Facilitate access to private finance Support via networking, training, information, addressing i.a. IP management, knowledge sharing, dissemination SME window in the EU financial facilities (debt facility and equity facility) Possible connection to PPC (and PPI?) Lump sum: ~ 6 months 0,5-2,5 M EC funding ~ 12 to 24 months No direct funding Souce: EASME

4 In 2014 and 2015 the SME Instrument will sponsor SMEs operating within 13 themes: ICT: open disruptive innovation Nanotech, or other advanced tech for manufacturing and materials Space research and development Diagnostics devices and biomarkers Sustainable food production and processing Blue growth Low carbon energy systems Greener and more integrated transport Eco-innovation and sustainable raw material supply Urban critical infrastructure Biotechnology-based industrial processes Mobile e-government applications (2015 only) SME business model innovation (2015 only)

7 Who can apply in the SME instrument? Application of a single SME or of several SMEs as a consortium is possible The SME status is a mandatory eligibility criterion The SME has to be located within the EU or Associated Country only one legal entity can participate in the same call (cut-off date), but application to another topic of the work programme is possible No application for phase 1 and 2 at the same time possible Associated countries:

8 Eligibility Criterion: SME Status To count as an SME, your organisation must be engaged in an economic activity and must have: fewer than 250 employees and an annual turnover of no more than 50 million or an annual balance sheet of no more than 43 million.
