My dissertation offers a new interpretation of Reid s philosophy, arguing that those objects are individual substances and that we can entertain thoughts about them qua particulars. Reid calls such thoughts individual conceptions, and distinguishes them from general conceptions (i.e. thoughts about general entities, universals). This dissertation focuses on two main questions: what in Reid s theory enables him to account for our ability to think immediately about the particulars that surround us? And what is the relation between individual conceptions and what are usually called singular thoughts? Answering these questions is quite complicated because, in Reid s view, several faculties of the human mind enable us to entertain different kinds of singular thoughts. These are: perception allowing us to get in contact with presently existent particulars; memory enabling us to think about particulars that existed in the past and we were acquainted with; and imagination which lets us think about particulars that neither existed nor will ever exist. In separate chapters, I explain how Reid s account of these faculties allows for these different kinds of singular thoughts.
