1 Marching Band, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Jazz Band Additional Opportunities: Solos and Small Ensemble Contest Conference, District and State Bands Winter Drumline Color Guard Winter Guard Music Theory All bands rehearse during the school day. There are some additional rehearsals in the summer and before and after school. Directors: Andy Kroesen- Director Jacob Crawford- Director Emily Pierson- Director Marching band is open to all incoming freshmen that have successfully completed 8 th grade band. This group will perform at local and regional events and competitions. All students enrolled in high school band are automatically a member of the marching band. After marching season is over students will audition for a chair placement in either the Concert or Symphonic band. These bands will perform in several concerts and participate in the State Large Ensemble contest. Jazz band is an audition band only. This course is a study of advanced high school jazz literature, style and improvisation. The jazz band performs at several concerts, events, competitions and serves as the pep band for varsity basketball games.

2 \ Color Guard Qualifications to Participate: Good attitude, good attendance, good grades, plus a desire to have fun and compete. Competition Season: September - November Practice: -Practice beings in the summer before the school year starts -1 st hour during 1 st semester Coordinator: Amy Wilson amy.wilson@harrisonvilleschools.org Harrisonville Royal Regiment Marching Band is known as the Pride of Harrisonville - and you can be part of that pride without playing an instrument! The Royal Regiment Color Guard practices, travels, and competes with the band during the fall semester, and our band is one of the best in West Central Missouri! By being a member of Color Guard, you will become a part of the 100+ member competitive organization, one of the largest groups HHS has to offer. Anyone can audition, and it s ok if you ve never picked up a flag before - audition is the perfect time to learn!

3 Winter Guard Want a way to experience dance and choreography unlike anywhere else? How about auditioning for Harrisonville Winter Guard! Winter guard performance is a combination of dance and lyrical movements using flags, rifles and other props. As part of the Mid-Continent Color Guard Association (MCCGA), Harrisonville Winter Guard competes with other winter Guard groups across the state. Last year, Harrisonville was the Regional C Winter Guard Champion in the state of Missouri. Anyone can audition, and it is okay if you have never picked up a flag before, audition week is a perfect time to learn. You must have a good attitude, good grades and a desire to have a fun time and ready to compete. 4 Freshmen Mentoring Program Juniors or Seniors benefit with a platinum card, special field trips and a free t-shirt. Juniors and Seniors who: Help and assist freshmen transition from middle school to high school. Provide a safe, nurturing atmosphere. Become friends with freshmen. Teach freshmen study habits and character education. Act as a role model 365 days a year. 6 SkillsUSA SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers, and industry representatives working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. CCC students who are taking classes in trade, technical, and health occupations program can participate in this organization that focuses on leadership and employability skills within each chosen career area. Competitive events include First Aid/CPR, welding, automotive service technology and many more. Students compete in district competition that will hopefully lead them to competing at state and national levels. By being a member of SkillsUSA, you will be able to demonstrate the skills you learn in class, compete for honors and recognition and earn scholarship money. SkillsUSA helps each student excel. We provide educational programs, events and competitions that support career and technical education (CTE) in the nation s classrooms. 7 Vocal Music Department Show Choirs and Concert Choirs Show Choirs Music Makers Forefront Concert Choirs Royal Accord Serenata Other Music Classes Music Appreciation I Music Appreciation II Vocal Methods HHS offers two types of choral experiences. Show Choir is for those singers who want to sing, dance, act, compete and be a part of a very active group. HHS has two show choirs: Music Makers is our varsity group, open only to graders, and Forefront is our junior varsity (or prep) group, open to grades Concert Choirs are offered for those singers who want to sing and perform without all the other elements required for show choir. The concert choirs also have a somewhat less rigorous schedule. Royal Accord is our all-men concert choir and Serenata is our all-women group. Anyone wishing to sing in any choir must see Mr. Mathew for an audition. Director: Kip Mathew kip.mathew@harrisonvilleschools.org

8 Wildcat News Students enrolled in this course produce the school s newspaper, The Pride and HHS Wildcat News Online ( Building on knowledge from journalism courses, students learn more about the craft by writing stories, editing copy, taking photographs, shooting video, developing online content and creating layouts. Experienced students have the opportunity for leadership positions as newspaper editors. These students will have expanded responsibilities inside and outside of class. Some after-school meetings and reporting assignments are required. Wildcat News is a cocurricular activity, which meet daily dead lines during a specific period. Wildcat News creates and publishes several print editions throughout the school year and is responsible for the daily update of hhsnews.com. Students will also learn the responsible use of social media and how to interact with readers in various media. The Pride is an awardwinning publication placing in several categories in the JEMKC citywide contest. It has also been recognized nationally by the Dow Jones News Fund for social media coverage. Wildcat News is a combination of both WCN and Newspaper, offering the students of HHS and the community a true multimedia experience. To be eligible to participate in Wildcat News students must complete Introduction to Multimedia Journalism, Photojournalism or Introduction to Video Production with no less than a C and complete an online application. Students should be prepared to put in extra time outside of class to conduct interviews, take photos and videos, lay out and design the print edition and update the website. 9 Yearbook Students must complete Introduction to Multimedia Journalism or Photojournalism with no less than a C and complete an online application. He or she must also be a sophomore, junior or senior. Yearbook is a co-curricular activity, which meets daily during a specific period. Students should be prepared to put in extra time outside of class for interviews, taking photos and layout and design. Advisor: Sarah Cummings sarah.cummings@harrisonvilleschools.org Students enrolled in this class create the school s yearbook, The Roar. Using knowledge from Introduction to Multimedia Journalism and Photojournalism, students refine their skills by designing pages, creating photographs, researching topics and writing. Experienced students are eligible to become editors who lead the production of the book. After-school meetings and reporting assignments are required. All students are required to sell business advertisement to local businesses within the Harrisonville community in the fall and sell yearbooks to fellow students throughout the school year. The yearbook is produced by the students of Harrisonville High School and distributed to students in August. The Roar has been an award winner in several categories in the JEMKC citywide contest.
